Short answer, no.

It isn’t a necessity for the current trends of viral pop music (by that I mean synth-heavy pop like Taylor Swift or rap artists like Megan Thee Stallion). But it’s still all over the place with many popular mainstream artists like Olivia Rodrigo or Sabrina Carpenter, even if it’s regulated to clean rhythm strumming.

Mainstream music aesthetics come and go; guitar-centric instrumentation will one day become the popular convention again.

In a general context, I don’t the guitar as a instrument could never truly become obsolete. It simply provides tonal qualities and means of expression and technique that you can’t properly replicate with any other instrument.
