man I love Kayo Dot
Toby Driver in general
well I should say even if the latter Kayo Dot albums are bredy gud I'm more of a fan of albumsl ike Blue Lambency Downard, Hubardo and Coyote--and yes Choirs too, all are pretty damn great
Toby's obsession with trying to make (and be successful with) middling New Age Komische music is bizarre and you can tell he resents being lumped in with "prog" and "metal" circles despite those being the only people who really care about his music, and have for the past 25 years.

what's your favorite KD or TD album(s)?

I think zeuhl is probably the only genre out there whose lineage can be traced back to a single band

every other genre that's popped up either popped up within a scene or you can point to a bunch of different bands that popped up around the same time

Nah, there's loads of posts in the past from /prog/ explaining that prog metal is just the worst of both worlds since prog metal's neither good prog or good metal.

Prog metal largely sucks and the few good prog metal bands are just copying what prog and avant-prog artists already did in the 70s.

I don't hate prog metal out of hand, but I absolutely love just the ugliest, messiest, noisiest kinds of music possible--and I also love the most fey sounding prog folk
prog metal lacks a lot of the fun parts of prog for me a lot of the time, because they're not good at experimenting with their sound

I'd rather listen to Sissy Spacek or Harmonium than 99 percent of prog metal.

No, I used to really, really be into progressive metal in my teens before I started getting really into 70s prog rock and other forms of prog and stopped listening to most of the prog metal I considered good. In my teens I listened to everything from UneXpecT to Lykathea Aflame to Dark Millennium to !.T.O.O.H.!, worshiped bands like The Meads of Asphodel, Arcturus, and Sigh, used to love Dan Swano's various projects, thought Dir En Grey's prog phase was the coolest thing ever, owned every Voivod Album up until the 2000s, etc.

Most prog metal, including most of what I listed with a few exceptions just fucking sucks man. A lot of it fails at being good metal because it's trying to pursue being prog, but a lot of it falls flat on its face in being good prog because prog metal musicians are trying to fit a cube into a circle-shaped hole trying to mesh styles that really don't fit together.

I mean, there's still good prog metal, but the best prog metal are bands that lean heavily into metal rather than trying to be "King Crimson with growls" (*cough,* sigh, hail spirit noir, *cough*). It's why prog thrash and a few strains of prog/tech death are the only enjoyable forms of prog metal for me. Still love me some Voivod, still love me some !T.O.O.H.! Still love me some Lykathea Aflame.

I tried listening to the new Blood Incantation because people fucking called it another one of the "good prog metal" albums and rolled my eyes because rather than blending the prog with the metal seamlessly it just alternates between pink floyd worship and standard death metal.

Voivod (particularly their Dimension Hatross to The Outer Limits run) is the only prog metal band that genuinely stands up close to proper prog rock.
The last recent prog metal albums I actually enjoyed were Gonin-ish's last album or Afterbirth's 2017 album

I love metal.
Prog metal largely and mostly sucks and most of the interesting things in prog metal come from people who normally don't play metal, or at least from metal musicians with an eclectic career in other genres.

There's so much throwaway prog metal bands that half of the things labelled prog metal isn't even progressive. For fuck sake, a lot of avant-garde metal is hardly avant-garde and sounds more tame than even the most well known 70s prog bands. People throw around Sigh a lot and their drummer's so bad you could mistake him for a metronome lmao

>proge
Bro I was literally in the threads using the term proge when /mu/ first started using it. I know to stay far away from all of those albums.

>Don't listen to these bands, listen to bands that you've already listened to over a decade ago instead
A lot of /prog/ literally consists of people who grew out or expanded out of prog metal.

You'll tell me to listen to bands that I already listened to and (regrettably loved in hindsight) 10-20 years ago in my teens and early 20s.
>>
>>123953605
>/prog/ has a stick up its ass
/prog/ is actually one of most reasonable generals on 4chan, you can tell there is more old fags here compared to the rest of /mu/

Colors is a great album
>>
>>123953848
/prog/ is the place of serious posting
the rest of /mu/ is for shitposting
>>
posting prog metal in a prog rock thread is like if someone started posting "lo-fi" hip hop, in a lo-fi indie thread or something, completely different genre that just happen to have the same term in it.

the problem with letting metalfags post freely in prog threads is that metalfags use the term prog way more liberally and have lower standards and a lot of what they post would hardly be considered prog if you stripped the metal from it and put it in the 70s
>>

Ah, the pretentious world of prog metal, where misguided fans conflate technicality with artistry, drowning in a sea of overblown guitar solos and drumming that prioritizes speed over soul. It's amusing, really, how they crow about time signatures and polyrhythms as if complexity is inherently valuable, while true musical depth eludes them. In stark contrast, the golden age of prog rock, think King Crimson, Magma, Camel, and Univers Zero, they represent a pinnacle of emotional expression and coherent storytelling in modern music, where melodies and harmonies intertwine beautifully to evoke genuine feelings rather than mere headbanging frenzy. While prog metal wallows in an insufferable self-indulgence, the timeless elegance of prog rock remains an unmatched testament to the beauty of music itself, crafted not just for the intellect, but for the very heart and soul. 888 333 22 32, 01110100 01101111 01110000 00100000 01101100 01100101 01101100

Wish You Were Here, Close to the Edge, and Selling England all deserve to be there. Maybe I'd pick a different King Crimson album (Red or Larks?) but otherwise, since RYM is supposed to be a review aggregator site, this is a perfectly fine selection of cream-of-the-crop, universally acclaimed prog albums.

Finally listened to that Jihadi Greep's debut album, I thought it started rather strongly, with the peak is the second half of Holy Holy. Terra and the title track are pretty nice as well.
But then with each tracks, I found them rather uninspiring and that's when I found Greep really liked the 'slow start to boombastic, filled with instruments clashing one another and getting louder, ending' format because that's how he ended in almost every songs in this album. Every time he did that, I became less moved with what he's getting that.
Also for a track that received so much applause, The Magician is actually an utter horseshit. Yeah the intruments getting bigger and louder are one thing but the lyric is just banal and it's just Greep "singing" it out loud like a man wanting a pussy so bad (which is apparently a running theme in this album? idgi).
5.5/10, wouldn't listen to it again.
