Your guitar pickups "pick up" tone vibrations, converts them into electrical signals, then the amp receives them and "amplifies" it back as a louder signal that can produce louder music beyond the instrument itself.

I should never get a guitar. I was stupid when I got one. I can't play this thing. I tried, but 20 minutes on and I'm bored, my back hurts my shoulder burns and I sound like shit.
exercises are meaningless and do nothing.
songs are either strumming chords mindlessly or too hard for me.
>git gud
I wish I could, but I simply can't.
I don't want to keep doing this. I do not enjoy it, it is a chore, a waste of time leading me nowhere.

Learning it may be challening but that's how it is with everything, the exercises, the spider, scales etc. improve your playing, as boring as they are. Learning songs is the same way, there's a lot of drilling and repetition but that's the only way, and with every song you learn your technique and confidence improves. Have you tried the spider with a metronome?

When I got into playing guitar again I was surprised to find how much resources there are now, on youtube, from video tabs(!) to lessons, to theory to exercises. If you're not happy with how you play music that you like, in case it's too hard like fast metal or jazz with its weird rhythms, and you want to impress someone, try something simple and easily recognizable for example https://youtu.be/eE2Iq3CwtWg

Not a fan of Judas Priest but a lot of people may recognize this song if you play it and little things like that can go a long way.

Also you don't have to learn whole songs, just one or two riffs, especially if you're fed up. Take it slow and work on small chunks, learn the first four notes, then the next four, and so on. That's how Alex Webster learns songs.

>>

I recognice I have a problem here, as I don't have any clear goal. like "I want to be fast as fuck" or whatever.
but it seems I can't do the easy stuff anyway. like playing powerchords fast. or doing kirk hammet like solos
also I can't get a clear goal because if I think playing A, then I'll lack B, and if I play B, then I'll lack C and A... and so on.

I consider myself a beginner, I've had some classical training but when it comes to learning on your own, I think it matters to study the music you actually want to play. You can play anything given time, and it's a matter of investing 10x, 50x, 100x, 1000x the length of the song or riff playing in real time, depending on the difficulty. I've practiced a solo probably a thousand times and that's just how it is. All you need to do is pick a fast song you like, start slow, and drill the riffs hundreds of times. Slow is fast, whatever it is, if you play it at 0.1x speed a thousand times you'll learn it. And make sure you have your guitar physically close to you.

My problem is that I get sick of learning a particular song and give up at 80-90%, but other than repetition there's no other way. (that and wrist pain) There's exercises of course, but songs are exercises as well so you might as well :^)
>>
>>123968008
I want to know more about theory
I'm a good player in the sense that I'm pretty skilled at coming up with riffs and dual-guitar countermelodies based on what feels right, but I'm a literal fucking troglodyte at theory
Feels like my songwriting process would be significantly easier if I had theory to lean on instead of relying on trial-and-error and "IT JUST SOUND RIGHT DUDE"
>>
>And make sure you have your guitar physically close to you.
because that way when you waste time, watch a film or whatever, you can pick it up and include some practice as you're idling
>>
>>123968382
I think I'm in the same boat, but when I discovered intervals that really opened things up. I'm still learning them, and studying the fretboard as well, where are all the octaves of your root; and practicing different scales respectively.

https://www.all-guitar-chords.com/scales

"gotta go fast learn tab now, just improv bro" aint gonna cut it for me if I want to write songs.
>>
>>123968382
if your ear is already good just learn your intervals. no reason to learn shit like every mode of a scale
>>
>>123968382
https://youtu.be/sWAaJF9Wk0w
>>
I bought a yamaha c40 used and I'm trying to teach myself classical guitar
One problem I have is that I'm finding it very hard to hear the rhythms without hearing them beforehand
I do the clapping thing and 1 e and a thing but at a certain point it's like my brain isn't capable of thinking fast enough and I lose the beat
Do I need a teacher?
>>
>>123968544
never understood the point of learning circle of 4ths/5ths. 99% of musicians use the Nashville number system, once you learn that and your intervals you will always know which notes are in key because your intervals will always be the same distance apart on your instrument
>>
>>123968563
you’re going too fast, you have to build up speed like any technique. set a metronome, do quarter notes, 8th notes, 16th notes, and all variations of syncopated 16th notes. make sure you are also practicing leaving out the downbeat, so resting on the 1 but playing the other 16ths. that one is the hardest part and will give you the most development. also work on your triplets. In the beginning you will have to speak it out loud while playing because if you can’t say it you can’t play it. eventually it will be internalized by mixing silent practice into it
>>
>>123968641
Well I started trying to play pieces to a metronome at a low bpm but maybe you're right
What do you mean by 'do quarter notes, 8th notes, 16th notes, and all variations of syncopated 16th notes' though
I assume it's not playing a bar of quarter notes
>>
I just came to the conclusion that Mark Tremonti is the EVH of our generation. He's one of the only guitarists out there constantly innovating and trying new things. He's always honing in on his sound and technique. He writes songs that are pop rock on the outside, but are extremely technical and interesting to listen to. He's definitely got his own unique brand. I'm not saying he's anywhere near the innovator or guitarist Eddie was, but he's definitely underrated. I'd say him, and Wes Borland are the two that come to mind when I think of guys that can innovate and actually fill an entire sonic space with a single guitar. Tremonti was doing metalcore shit disguised as pop music before metalcore was a thing. Same with Borland.
>>
>>123968680
I assume you will need to sight read because you’re playing classical music. This channel is great to play along to:
https://youtu.be/YV35R4q4wzM?si=HMqOMCnZ-O8RvDia
>what do you mean
resting on the 1, 2, 3, and 4 and playing on the AND, playing on the E/and/A, playing in the and A etc etc. 1 and a, 1 e and, 1 e a, etc etc. you need to practice a bar of all those variations. You can make it more or less difficult for yourself. I have my girlfriend add and remove 16th notes from a bar of music in real time for my practice but I keep the metronome and playing rolling and just play the old rhythm until she’s done with the new one; keeps it fun and complex.
>>
>>123968544
I have been playing for 30 years and can't seem to figure out the notes on guitar. Like I know basically what I should or shouldn't play but can't remember individual notes or chords that belong in a progression. I've tried understanding it but it gets lost in translation. I'm actually a quite good guitarist, just can't into the whole math of it. I feel like this really fucks me when improvising, because I go to pentatonics and don't really know where I'm supposed to be when it comes to chord progressions and shit. I've always been confused by left and right and have a terrible memory. I have good technique. How do I overcome this and become pro level instead of advanced amateur?
>>
>>123968680
I should add once you get better timing you can start to crank up the difficulty by removing parts of the metronome. Removing the 2 and 4 is the easiest, removing the 1 and 3 is a bit harder followed by: only having the 1, only having 1 random beat, or picking a single random 16th note to set your metronome to. ultimate is 16th note but making the metronome skip an entire bar. I’m not there yet, but hope to be in a few months. are you tapping your foot or nodding your head to the beat or anything? I find it really helps

Honestly, and you're not going to like this answer... Rhythm is one of those things that I either think is innate in a person or not. There's a reason people can't clap in time or are born with atrocious voices that can't sing on time or in key. It's one of those things... You are probably good at other things. Guitar may not be your thing.
>>
>>123968850
I think you can get good at timing and to an extent you can learn groovy rhythms. I agree that “feeling the funk” is something you have to be born with
>>
>>123968770
Great video, I'll try this thanks
>>123968835
That sounds really difficult but I'll give it a go
>>123968850
I can clap in time
I just can't clap out a complicated rhythm from sheet music with a metronome unless I've already heard it before
>>
>>123968902
like I said dude that’s something to work up to. you should have your difficulty set to where you only mess up 20% of the time. Trying something too hard is a fun test but not what you set your practice around
>>
Foxy you fat fuck where have you been hiding
>>
Reminder of some indisputable but uncomfortable facts
>Budget guitars are better than they've ever been, you really don't need to spend more than $300 on a guitar
>Effects pedals are based
>IR cabs and amp sims are better than real amps
>You don't need more than 2 gain stages
>You don't need more than 1 delay
>You definitely don't need a compressor
>Tube amps in 2024 simply aren't worth the hassle of owning/maintaining
>The only vintage delay with a damn is the Space Echo
Sorry to break it to you boys but you need to fucking learn
>>
>>123969019
yes but avoid the cheap music man basses. they cheaped out on the copper in the pickups and sound off
>>
>>123969019
I unironically agree for the most part.
>>
>>123969019
Eh you need to spend at least 600 to get into a decent guitar. The rest is true.
>>
Reminder that playability is all that matters for learning the guitar and that you don't need an expensive instrument as a beginner.
>>
>>123969160
If that. Ignorance is bliss. My first guitar was some horrible acoustic I bought for $20 from a neighbor. He taught me "Pipeline" and told him to leave him alone. I didn't know how to tune or anything yet. I'm also left handed, but was given a right strung guitar, not knowing any better. So I trudged away at it. I can't even force myself to play correctly as a lefty anymore.
>>
>>123969350
You should get a professional to set it up for you and ensure that it has good playability
>>
>>123969372
should learn to do your own setups. the work that goes into setting up a guitar isn’t even worth $40 and the quality of work you get is hit and miss. you can do it by ear and $20 worth of tools
>>
>>123969410
A beginner isn't going to know whether a guitar has a good set up or not and that might cause problems later on in terms of their development on that guitar
>>

fair point I would argue though that a good setup can be proven mathematically and can be measured
