Prior to the Beatles, the LP format was reserved for jazz and classical only. Pop, rock n roll, RnB were geared entirely toward single releases. “Albums” were rare, and were just a bunch of cover songs supported by a couple singles (also frequently covers) that were curated by labels with little input from the artist.

There was tons of great jazz and classical recorded before 1963 tho.
