Is the Gibson SG good for metal?
>>
>>124178733
i have an epi SG and yes, it's a beast for all kinds of metal. from hard rock all the way up to grindcore to slam to power metal to deathcore to shitty crabcore
>>
>one of the most famous rock guitars ever
>maybe the quintessential rock guitar

>"hey guys is this good for (heavier rock music)?"
>>
>>124178733
Its as good for metal as its for blues. The shape of the guitar does not define the sound that much at all. Its the pickups that do. Pickups can be changed too.

It’s literally the FIRST metal guitar.

Tony Iommi played one in Black Sabbath.
>>
>>124178851
inb4 the resident idiot who'll say Black Sabbath is not metal
>>
>>124178904
nobody that isn't trolling or being a contrarian faggot would say that out loud.
>>
>>124178851
This, half of the most iconic metal riffs were played on an sg
>>
>>124178904
Black Sabbath are considered Heavy Meta by default, and are considered by many to be the founders of Heavy Meta, but their early material is really more akin to blues and be-bop jazz.

Many Heavy Metal bands site Black Sabbath as an influence and inspiration, and, over the years their music has gotten simpler and more stripped down, so, yes, I believe Black Sabbath can be called Heavy Metal, even though the term to describe that kind of music didn't really exist until the mid to late 1970s.
>>
>>124178928
Well he have loads of both kinds around here.
Anyway I agree, the SG is responsible for the first and most iconic metal music ever recorded. Using single coil pickups, no less.
>>
>>124178995
i think tony's original sg had p90s in it? sort of halfway between humbucker and single coil.
>>
>>124179093
P90s are technically single coil. They're a bit different from the Fender design which we now consider the generic single coil pickup but still, they're not using any additional coils or workarounds to reduce hum.
>>
>>124179093
P90s are overwound single coils, so yes and technically no

guitar of choice for women. 100% serious and non ironic

this is incorrect. the official guitar of women everywhere is an offset fender

What?
>>
>>124179879
True. The inventor of rock n roll, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, played an SG
>>
>>124178733
Is it normal to swap a guitar every couple of years? I have a 355 copy which I love, but lately get the craving for a smaller guitar like the SG
>>
>>124178733
not really.
I have one. It's okay but doesn't stay in tune or have as much sustain as my Explorer.
Explorer is the superior choice.
>>
What kind of metal?
>>
You can obviously play metal on a Super Gay but I think you're better off with a super strat. longer scale length is better for down tuning and having a whammy bar for tasteful kerry king style soloing
>>
>>124183838
Thank you Rolling Stone, very cool
>>
>>124184193
That's the reason guitarists always own so many guitars
Are violinists like this? Any other instrument users do this?
>>
>>124178733
it's good for any genre if you have small hands. just replace the low E string with a narrow gauge string and downtune the guitar to C.
>>
>>124184351
board players like to have a stack of units. most guitarists can get by with three, solid body elec, hollow body elec, acoustic, maybe a Dobro, and a floorful of effects
>>

Women can’t play guitar
>>
>>124184351
See anon there's something inside of me that thinks it's wasteful to buy more than 3 guitars. It's not a poverty thing I just find it hard to justify when it's only a hobby, I probably will get another one though to keep for alternate tunings at least
>>
>>124178733
Almost all solid body guitars with humbuckers can play metal. Plus as les paul said when he demanded gibson take his name off the beast "It looks like the devils guitar"
>>
>>124178733
depends on the metal
not fast metal with pinch harmonics and dive bombs

It's a no from me, it depends on what type of metal, for me it's doom, black and death metal, bought this 6 months ago, I'm playing it mostly in B standard, it's great for extreme metal, the EMGs going in TS808, Metalzone, and Mesa Boogie dual rec make a killer tone. https://youtu.be/PO97oI8Hw9M

The sustain / tension is also great for lower tunings because of the 26.5" scale length, the strings ring out for 10+ seconds, it has such a rich clean tone as well, couldn't be happier with it, feels great in the hands. Personally I wouldn't buy a guitar with a 24" scale, the strings would be loose for anything below B std, A, G, and F are probably out of the question. I'm just not that interested in E std, whenever I pick up the acoustic it feels like a toy, 7 strings just give you more freedom.

Fun fact: a cool thing about B std is that you can play E std riffs on the 5th, 4th and 3rd strings.
>>
>>124178733
No it's a piece of shit boomer guitar. There are a thousand reasons to not get an SG.
>>
>>124184671
Les Paul hated it the SG because it has no sustain.
>>
You can play some EPIC riffs with this guitar OP! Check it out!

If you want a SG that was outright designed for metal then the sg prophecy is a good choice. If you have to have the Gibson version for whatever reason, get a SG Modern or Supreme and change out the pickups for either Fishman, Emg's or S.D Blackouts.
If you can't soldier, just get a tech to do it for you.

I was just looking at sphincter guitars, are they pre set up for B standard or do you have to do that yourself? I hear you need to set up a guitar to handle the string gauge necessary for B standard but idk how to file the nut and mess with the truss rod without fucking my guitar up
>>
>>124178733
Anything with a humbucker will do.
>>
>>124189896
Hold it then dumbass. That's a non issue, stop acting like you are performing feats on stage.
>>
Do I do hums or P90s though?

Can't find the exact tutorial I used on youtube but there's plenty. Look up
>truss rod / relief / string action adjustment
>complete guitar setup tutorial

I bought it second hand it was set up in AEADGBE, I think that's how they ship the from the factory as well, the previous owner must've put heavy gauge strings, the 7th is maybe .64 and I'm still using them. Looks like the nut hasn't been filed and it can handle heavy gauge from the start, I bought another set of strings with similar thickness. You can do it, the main thing to remember is to first unwind the strings and then adjust the truss rod otherwise you risk damage.

The first time I was impatient and I turned the truss rod without knowing I had to loose the strings and I heard an unpleasant metal creak from the neck, so don't do that. I was probably lucky because I was 5 steps down from E, that high tension with 7 thicc strings would've probably ripped the rod and goodbye amoré. I did all subsequent intonation, action, and truss rod adjustments after downtuning to B standard, (that is B std with F# 7th, so F#BEADF#B).

I found that as you downtune, you need to raise the action a little otherwise you'll get a lot of fret buzz, especially on the 7th, the bridge at the 7th is raised all the way up.

Another fun fact about B standard, is that you're low enough that you can play along the Cello on the sixth, your sixth matches its lower fourth.

If I remember correctly Dickey had an SG and Duane had his Les Paul. Duane would always have to retune on stage for his open tuning for slide and it took so long Dickey gave him the SG so he had another guitar to make the dedicated slide tuning one
