There is only one place to go, and the only real fear to me is that the kind of people interested in metal are simply not intelligent enough to process what I'm talking about. Such that the obvious path is never fully taken because there is no one capable of doing what needs to be done due to the requirements and talent getting higher and higher. Nothing has yet suggested this being the case (bands like Ad Nauseam, Ehnahre, and Jute Gyte are being made which are far beyond what was before), but it is a possibility. However it is the case that this niche will probably get tighter and tighter as things like drums and repetitions are slowly taken away or only used as tools rather than their current place as a GIMMICK.

High gain makes everything loud. I think I've seen you post about 'vertical' construction, which is one way to have more dynamics in a song while still being very distorted. I would want to explore having more contrast of guitar sounds while retaining the core 'metal' feeling of it.
