without you and once are pretty good. both are bloated, but without you's weird chorus get stuck in my head from time to time
knowing eddie did everything but the vocals on most tracks is commendable, even if the results aren't very good. also explains why the drumming is pretty simple
>>
This album proves that Eddie was not the main creative force in the band, nor should he be.
>>
>>124441406
it proves that he was but lost all his talent in the mid 80s and sammy was not the main culprit for their lame ass sound
>>
would have been good if
>eddie wasn't so coked out
>they hired a competent producer

Van Halen III, released in 1998, is an absolute banger that flies under the radar for too many people. It’s got that old-school Van Halen energy but also brings something fresh with Gary Cherone stepping in as the new frontman. People sleep on this album, but trust, it slaps harder than people realize.

First off, the guitar work from Eddie Van Halen? Straight up legendary. His riffs on tracks like "Without You" and "Fire in the Hole" are pure fire – his tone is so crisp and gnarly, it’ll have you air-guitaring for days. Seriously, Eddie’s ability to create melodies while still flexing on the fretboard is next-level. The solo on "Once" is an absolute vibe, showing he’s still got that magic touch.

Gary Cherone’s vocals are lowkey fire too. He brings something a little more dynamic compared to Sammy or Dave, showing off his range without losing the raw energy Van Halen is known for. Tracks like “One I Want” and “Josephina” hit different, blending powerful vocals with melodic hooks that stick with you.

The album as a whole is bussin' with variety. You’ve got that signature Van Halen rock ‘n’ roll swagger, but it also explores some unexpected directions. “How Many Say I” is a mellow, almost haunting track that proves the band wasn’t just about high-energy anthems – they could slow it down and still crush it.

Despite the mixed reception at the time, Van Halen III is a hidden gem in their discography. It’s like that underrated track you find on a playlist that unexpectedly goes hard. If you haven’t given it a spin in a while, do yourself a favor and listen again. It’s fire, and deserves way more love than it gets.

thanks for the tip fellow Extreme enjoyer.
For everyone else a quick reminder that Extreme was better than anything Sammy Hagar was involved in, including Van Hagar

most of the album is like that. yes half of the tracks are repurposed from 70s/80s riffs, but if that's what needed to get shit done then so be it. ADKOT shits all over their 90s stuff.

I am afraid to listen to this album.

i can imagine how refreshing it was for old VH fans to hear DLR songs after not being played since the 80s
>>
>>124452909
they should've done a live album with gary, the killer looked like they got a lot of the youthful energy back, especially with eddie growing his hair out again.
>>124453154
sammy still played jump/ain't talking about love/panema from time to time, he doesn't really do his own twist on any of them though, and clearly didn't enjoy it. he compared covering them live to karaoke at one point.

i have no idea where "the killer" came from. maybe time to start taking meds
