I used to be really into this band, but I don't think they hold up. At this point in my life, I'd much rather listen to Husker Du or Nirvana than I would the Pixies. Their music is more real, whereas the Pixies feel inauthentic and kinda poser desu. The Pixies rely too much on gimmicks, the songs just aren't as well-written.

I bought the Doolittle on cassette not knowing anything about The Pixies only that a bud of mine covered "Tame", which I thought sucked, nonetheless, "Check em," he said. I remember having an out of body experience 1st listen of "Wave of Mutilation" rewind teeh heck out of that song. Took some girls to a casino 8 hour back and forth road trip, Doolittle was the soundtrack, those girls loved the heck out of the Doolittle tape.

I really only like about half of Surfer Rosa and again about half of Doolittle.My feelings about the band go beyond that though. The songs are all about stupid and/or edgy shit and Black Francis sings in almost a cartoonish voice. Nirvana and Husker Du feel more relatable and they have more grit to them. And as you alluded to, they definitely have more great albums and songs than the Pixies as well.>>124441940Yeah, this is my feeling exactly. Even on their classic albums, there are a lot of songs I outright hate. I still like some Pixies songs, but the ones I do like I've heard too many times and they just don't appeal to me the same way they used to. When I first heard Surfer Rosa as a teenager, it shocked me. I thought it was like nothing I'd ever heard before. But now it doesn't have that effect on me, so what's left to appreciate about it? Not much.If you compare the band to Nirvana, every single one of their albums is consistently good. Even something like Incesticide, which is just a b-side comp, is far more consistent than any Pixies album. Nirvana has very few songs that are straight-up bad. If you like Nirvana's sound, you're going to like almost anything they released.
Once on a family camping trip when I was a teenager, I jacked off to this album cover multiple times from my iPod nano screen.
