I posit that the primary defining feature separating nu-metal from real metal is the vocal delivery. I've been listening to Slipknot's "All Hope is Gone" because it marked a distinct shift in their sound, with the introduction of more complex song structures, guitar solos, double bass drumming, etc, and noticed that, despite all of this, it's still clearly nu-metal. Why? Because the vocalist just never shuts the fuck up. I believe this proclivity stems from nu-metal's rap influence. The lyrics often rhyme and the delivery is also rhythmic. Contrast this with any metal band and the difference is clear as day. Devildriver, another one of the "heavier" nu-metal bands have the exact same feature/problem. They have double bass drumming, guitar solos, etc, but it's like the vocalist doesn't understand the concept of letting the music breathe.

Nu metal didn't come from metal, so it's not metal. It came from alt/funk/rap rock, like FNM and RATM.

If you sound more like RATM and not Judas Priest, you're not metal.
