Reminder that this album is just 5 months old and it already has more ratings than every album by Interpol, Kate Bush, Elliott Smith, Massive Attack, Nine Inch Nails, Jeff Buckley, Sigur Ros, System of a Down, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Boards of Canada, Smashing Pumpkins, Queens of the Stone Age, The Avalanches, Yes, Burial, Charles Mingus, Jimi Hendrix, Depeche Mode, Deftones, Tool, Michael Jackson, Arctic Monkeys, Can, Alice in Chains, Frank Zappa, Iron Maiden, Beach House, Duster, LCD Soundsystem, Pearl Jam, Talk Talk, Flaming Lips, Slayer, Brian Eno, Modest Mouse, OutKast, Flying Lotus, Burzum, My Chemical Romance, Tom Waits, Fiona Apple, Oasis, The Stone Roses, New Order, Pavement, The Stooges, Leonard Cohen, Stevie Wonder, Belle and Sebastian, The Who, Neil Young, Green Day, Death, Joni Mitchell, Wire, Coldplay, Rolling Stones, Linkin Park, The White Stripes, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Kraftwerk, Queen, Dead Kennedys, Captain Beefheart, Rush, Genesis, R.E.M., AC/DC, Beastie Boys, Muse, Ween, Opeth, Soundgarden, Brand New, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Fugazi

What does that say about the site?
>>
>>124446903
it says that people are focused on rating new and popular stuff instead of rating and talking about old stuff, I really don't care desu.
>>
>>124446903
And yet, no one has heard it.
>>
>>124446903
This album feels like some kind of a psyop
I remember when all that brat summer crap was everywhere for a short time and it died down immediately
It lasted even shorter time than Hawk Tuah
>>
>>124446903
it says that YOU need to get off whatever website that was taken from
>>
>>124446903

OH NO NO NO Charliesisters, it's getting lowered now that that the users who do multiple listenings are rating it

Reminder that paying attention to RYM ratings is a mental illness that warps how you engage with music. Do yourself a favor and never use that site again.
>>
>>124447041
I have been using rym for over a decade and I remember when every overhyped album didn't instantly get into top 500
>>
>>124446903
Meanwhile the true song of the summer of 2024...

Nothing in brat gets even closer, not even the song with billie eilish kek
>>
>>124447038
It was 100% coordinated. Music conglomerates (small and large) and independent artists know about the power of RYM and its ability to positively etch records into the cultural landscape. RYM is being exploited bigly. You really think this album https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/magdalena-bay/imaginal-disk/ got where it is naturally? Not a fucking chance in hell. Great records take time to become "legendary" status. In addition to RYM efforts, it's not hard to coordinate a meme campaign these days (see brat meme). If you know the right IG/TikTok accounts, meme or otherwise, to push your stupid campaigns its not hard to create a positive upward spiral. It all kinda sucks desu. People fall for it day in and day out. ngl shit makes me want to kms. It's all so fake and hollow, especially the music behind all of this.
>>
>why do hipsters prefer Charli XCX to literal whos like Charles Mingus or normieslop like Linkin Park
kys
>>
>>124447181
>hipsters now fall for heavily marketed psyops
Sad!
>>
>>124446903
it makes sense, people are more likely to rate new stuff
>>
>>124446958
This. I mean who really cares about someone's review of "Thriller"? Legendary album, top selling of all time, blah blah blah....like what more is there to say about it?

Whereas if you review current stuff it has more the feeling of controlling the direction of culture. Adding your input into what's happening now
>>
>>124447179
My two only frinds on rym who rated that album one gave it 1 star, the other 3 stars
>>
>>124447195
>people are more likely to rate new stuff
Her second most rated album has less than 30k ratings after 5 years
>>
>>124446903
To this day I've still never hear it.
>>
>>124447118
seems like a (You) problem, mentally sane people can use RYM just to discover music
>>
>>124447205
My average rating from 26 friends is 3.37
>>
>>124447221
I mean 4 years
>>
>>124447192
her 2020 album has 30k ratings, was that also a psyop?
>>
>>124447179
>it's not hard to coordinate a meme campaign these days
>not hard to create a positive upward spiral

Ok so why isn't everyone doing it? Don't hate on Charli or Magdalena bay for playing the game well
>>
>>124447244
That's not as heavily astrotufed as an album getting almost 40k ratings in 6 months
>>
>>124447226
you still haven't learned english either
>>
The Charli hype was very shortly lived, it just didn't caught on, because none of the songs are catchy enough to stick. Simple as.
>>
>Album keep getting rereleased over and over again with completely remixed versions of every track
This is how you know it’s overrated (that doesn’t mean bad btw).
A classic album is an album that is perfectly crafted from beginning to end and each track is perfectly aligned. If you can completely change the album and it doesn’t completely destroy the album’s identity, it is not a classic album.
>>
>>124447257
it's called "being popular", Brat has literally 10x more streams than this 2020 album
>>
>>124447285
Popular by what measure? I literally never heard a song from it in the radio
>>
>>124447257
I do think there’s something suspect about all of these electropop albums all of the sudden getting 20k or more ratings in a month
>>
>>124446903
rym is insanely saturated with tiktok zoomers and fantanoites fixated on whatever the new popular thing is, even if you're solely using the site to find music (as it should be) you're best off skipping the first few most popular pages for basically any genre since overrated garbage always floats to the top
>>
>>124447252
Okay you're right. I left an important part out.

>it's not hard to coordinate a meme campaign these days
>not hard to create a positive upward spiral
>if you have money and clout

>Charli or Magdalena bay

Them and THEIR TEAMS are playing the game well. Individually they don't deserve all the credit. I'd argue they are nothing more than just the face of a slop machine.
>>
>>124447230
Not my problem at all. I don't use the site and never will. Even a quick review of posts and comments on this board show that it's for shallow, hype chasing fools. And I didn't say anything about music discovery, only paying attention to the 100% meaningless ratings.
>>
>>124447292
>you're best off skipping the first few most popular pages for basically any genre since overrated garbage always floats to the top
Lol are you one of those people who thinks any album with more 1000 ratings is normie shit?
>>
>>124447292
RYM is still good for finding good music but the charts for any year after 2010 are almost worthless
>>
>>124447305
Cool what do you use to find music?
>>
>>124447313
nah I listen to a fair amount of normie-adjacent shit like radiohead, tame impala, etc.; I've just noticed that a lot of the better stuff isn't on the first couple pages if you're searching by genres
>>124447323
yeah the current "community" on rym is nightmarishly bad, still one of the better resources to find music though
>>
RYM sucks now, use Sputnikmusic instead
>>
>>124447350
Depends which genre, the worst offender are various electronic genres where top albums are weeb game soundtracks
>>
ZOOMERS KILLED RYM LIKE THEY KILLD LETTERBOXD
>>
>>124447453
zoomers have been on a rampage desu. im growing tired of it.

millenial bros how to resurrect the underground and keep zoomies out? is it even possible anymore tiktok? every time they find out about something they run to Tiktok to claim their social points.
>>
>>124446903
Brat is better than all of those except Hendrix.
>>
>>124447336
Bandcamp. Not the editorial picks, though.
>>
>>124447480

>except Hendrix
Elaborate
>>
>>124447230
it's good to discover music but the ratings can be super arbitrary sometimes
>>
>>124447196
pure faggotry. that's what's happening now and you're a big part of it.
>>
>>124446903
I genuinely thought there was supposed to be something more edgy about this artist or to this album than people give it credit for. The lyrics are catchy and the instrumentals remind me of old Monster Cat. That's it.
Doesn't feel special or resonate with me. The cover is the most basic shit but easily replicated.
The reason for the mass amount of ratings is because they all come from zoomers who meme it to high heaven for reasons stated above.

>Not the terminally online zoomers who seethe over Trump winning
Not really, her recent remix album came and went and didn't even go #1.

RYM moved onto shilling Magdelena Bay as well
>>
>>124446903
Also the album is just 100 ratings away from surpassing A Love Supreme by John Coltrane
>>
>>124447147
and those are just spotify listens
latinos usually play music on youtube or pirate it (usually from youtube)
>>
>>124446903
Music is a fashion accessory for people who want a personality. Music-based social media like RYM offers a platform to attach yourself to specific artists and albums, and thus project who you want to be seen as. The more popular it becomes, the lower the proportion of users who want to actually use it for finding and tracking music.
This album's marketing campaign offered a premade personality in extremely potent fashion.
>>
>>124449208
What kind of personality is that?
>>
>>124448500
bro people here were still seething over RATM not being antivax until a few months ago, expect these Brat threads to continue until at least 2026

My thoughts as well. Let deluxe editions for purely collectors and hardcore fans.
>>
>>124447350
UI is what saves the site. Never used lists tho, I just filter the charts by genre and year for all releases excluding videos.
>>
>>124448545
the new tyler isn't bad so much as it's mediocre and a massive letdown considering the rest of his discography (that normies and superfans are parading as aoty anyways)
>>
RYM is a joke now
>>
>>124446903
>What does that say about the site?
pr firms have thousands of accounts to avoid being cited as bots but which can be bought to apply reviews. the users on this site are willfully blind to it

New music is made for the RYM kids. I've said this on RYM once and hundreds of them mobbed me like I said the Holocaust was a lie. For the same reason alcohol ads target alcoholics -- any music made since Death Grips broke up. that isn't going to be on the top 40 radio, is specifically designed to bait RYM kids. They are a demographic now. Charli XCX has been cleverly appealing to both RYM snots and Top 40 drones for a few years now.
>>
>>124447179
How are they exploiting RYM specifically? Hiring interns to write reviews? Deploying bots? The marketing for this album is fair game, even if I would personally applaud it for the virality of its campaign. They really knew how to push all the right buttons. I just think you’re giving too much credit to a niche music review website with a penchant for avant-teen bullshit, RYM is definitely a lower-order concern to artists and labels
>>
>>124457148
It's not lower order if the niche userbase is OBSESSED with consooming music -- 10x more so than any normie youll target via insta or tiktok will be

It's funny since there was a bit of this addressed in the documentary Hypernormalization, when it touched on the original impotence of 70s and 80s rockers' inability to really affect the world and just sink into a fantasy of of their own making. It paralleled Patti Smith in NYC with the rise of Trump at the same time. It didn't say that the Trumps of the world were impactful either per se, but that they did change the world around them more (usually for the worse), unlike musicians stopped doing after the 60s.
Now they repeat it again with a fantasy of social media and botting and living in echo chambers and deluding themselves they're part of some big movement. Just completely out of touch even more than before. Once some more objective metric is introduced (like an election or sales numbers), they get clobbered and repulse people. Same deal with Hollywood going woke and broke.

Perhaps cultural change is harder to effect than making a material impact by controlling the levers of power. Hippies may be virtually worthless but an interest in guiding the culture is also important, especially when it's all you have.
