What role do drugs play in an artists career? Bob Marley with pot, Floyd with psychedelics, Janis with heroine. Is it the artists personality that draws them to the drugs?
off topic
>>124450062no, it isn't. I am wondering what anons think about the connection between drugs and music, how is that off topic?
>>124450045>Janis with heroineI thought she was a boozie, not into smack
>>124450371simply put, drugs and music are the perfect combinationI love stoner music
>>124450093Drugs can create stimulating moments/thoughts, but regular use makes you boring. The complete opposite of stimulating or stimulated. Especially longterm use of heroine and weed. You're either nodding away or lazy. I think these people were brilliant despite the drugs and would've been better off in the longterm.
>>124450416They were trippers more than stoners. And the lyricist was interesting because of his spiritual beliefs most of all. He was more into Christian esoterism and gnostic stuff, rather than the Hindu stream that was in a lot of 60s culture. So a nice change of pace at the very least.
>>124450455I was generalizing and not talking about the that album, though, I love the psychedelic sounds of the 13th floor elevators, not gonna lie
>>124450428Well let's take Syd Barrett. You think those first few Floyd albums would have sounded the same without all those psychedelics? I would wager they would have been night and day different. Impossible to know of course.

>>124450517That's just a matter of sincerity. They were at Brian Epstein's bidding. Pick a song from that era where they seem more sincere and its good shit. i.e. You Can't Do That
>>124450517Love Me Do is a great song
Velvet Underground, this is one time I want the Sperg in the thread, would they be who they are without heroin? I would say no.
>>124450790Lou wasn't exactly glorifying getting high. In his words, he was exorcising those demons. But he wanted to capture the seductive experience of it at first. And on a sidenote, I don't know how he is called a hack. He did this well.
Drugs and music are both ways that people try to understand what's going on both inside and outside their own minds. It's how people who are often lonely, who feel like they're trapped in their own heads, no matter who they're around, actually try to find better reasons to live.Artists often take drugs for the same reasons that they make art.To stay alive.Elliott Smith did this.It worked for a while. Then it didn't.So he killed himself. And I wish he fucking didn't.
>>124450045>Floyd with psychedelicsJust Syd, the others were stuck up and squares
>>124450914In the case of Smith, do you think it was just a way to cope? Or do you think his use added to his artistry?
>>124450877I never thought he glorified it, few really do. My guess for the hack would be his personality drew him to heroin, the music followed. One of these days I am going to do a full documentary on this.>>124451761No shit? I'm sure they partook.
>>124452145A lot of his music referenced drugs.I don't think we can separate the way people cope from their artistry.Since artistry isn't separate from the way people suffer. It often arises in response to that.Smith's music encoded his suffering. It did so partly through lyrics about drug use.But drug use, for him, wasn't one-sidedly bad.He used drugs to find a way to be happy. That didn't discount his happiness.Any more than the fact he was often sad, and angry at himself, discounted his music.
