how do I get into hip hop if I primarily listen to pop and rock? I feel like I'm missing out on a whole bunch of good music because I can't appreciate it.the song structures are entirely different and lyrics seem to be very important which is a problem because I don't pay attention to lyricspic unrelated
>>124452143>I feel like I'm missing out on a whole bunch of good music
its not music
>>124452143Just listen to what you like. You're not missing on something you don't like. That said, Kanye is really cool, and I don't have to pay to his lyrics to enjoy the music.90s hip hop is also pretty good. 2pac, Snoop, Ice cube etc
>>124452143>>124452273What this guy said for sure. I mean for me personally when I was younger listening to Linkin Park and then earlier Kanye made me start appreciating some great albums in the genre. Again the LP was when I was young lol, Hybrid Theory is still kind of a good album kind of maybe.Rage Against the Machine is surprisingly hip-hop in some of their songs on Evil Empire and their S/T, and you've (probably) heard them so listen to those albums in fullDanny Brown, JPEGMAFIA, Death Grips, etc. 'experimental' rappers will probably be a good start since you're on this board
>>124452143Try listening to EARLY (read: "pre-gangsta") rap. I find that it appeals to rock fans in a way that modern stuff does not.Recommendations:>Planet Rock: The Album>Whodini s/t>Escape (by Whodini)>Special Ed's singles (not so much his albums)>Lost in Space (by Jonzun Crew)>To the Future Shock (by Captain Rock)>White Lines (Don't Don't Do It) [song]
>>124452524Oh, and Run-DMC's first three albums. Try the song Rock Box to start with.
Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet Rage Against the Machine - Evil EmpireDälek - From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griotsclipping. - There Existed an Addiction to BloodA Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
>>124452143dont listen to it. please anon

Barking about crime over stolen Isley Brothers tracks isn't music.
>>124454703No one said it was.
>>124452143As other anons said, start with the earlier stuff. They have simpler rhymes and it gets you acclimated to their accents (assuming you don't talk to many black people, that was honestly a problem for me). Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Too $hort, Ultramagnetic MC's, World Class Wreckin' Cru, LL Cool J, Eric B & Rakim, and Stetsasonic are some good 80s acts. After that I'd go into the jazzy NY boom bap stuff; A Tribe Called Quest. Guru / Gang Starr, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Jaz-O, Digable Planets, De La Soul, Black Sheep, Common (not NY but same shit), Fugees and Lauryn Hill, and some others I'm forgetting. There were two prominent collectives, Native Tongues and Soulquarians(??)After that I'd try out each region's sound and see what you like. The big ones are NY, LA, Bay Area, Houston, Memphis, Chicago. Look up lists online or look at the charts on the wiki, there's plenty of resources
>>124452143Listen to these albums in their entirety, crackerhttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bfL_GQSYneE&list=PLNitVGYNCIxHlDBLFLVuo0dCLqkDUgFnLhttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld3jSVZWS_E&list=PLpi4qepPPKZ-fXyef4dYXPDcTRXJsQHHdhttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B9F5DyQbfX8https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_nZZ3Y12m2A
>>124455020>it gets you acclimated to their accents (assuming you don't talk to many black people, that was honestly a problem for me)Are you European or something? It's very hard for me to imagine not being used to black American 'accents'. I pretty much grew up hearing them since the day I was born, and I'm about as white as you get. However, it's also hard for me to imagine a European bothering to get into shitty 80's rap either-- that seems like a very American thing to do. So I'm kinda confused desu.
>>124452143you probably should start with the less lyrics-oriented stuff:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9LXarCq2tEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77nB_9uIcN4https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKl6umkwKfU
>>124455871>shitty 80's rapthis>Fuck them O.G. niggas, they stuck in the 80'shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OTOpE5f6dg
>recommending 90s gangsta rapOP's going to just hate it. 80s rap had objectively better beats.
>>124452143>I don't pay attention to lyricstry drugged out trap stuff then maybe? the more lryic focused rap in the genre may attract you thought since people like different things in different genres
>>124452143watch 8 mile
>>124455020You got great recommendations in this thread OP. All I would add is Gravediggaz, Wutang before Wutang, Geto Boys, and Scarface. Listen to Geto Boys first three and Scarface The Untouchable.
