Production is akin to any Joey Sturgis plug-in cranked to +6db, and enough sample replacement on drums that you might as well have programmed them. At least other bands could record decently and in the same room. This just seems like an album where every song starts with a 4/4 beat count in, or a dissonant open chord being strummed.

Probably Has something to with brand new being the dullest artist in the history of modern music. Seriously each album following the exodus from taking back Sunday has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the ‘haunting arrpegios’ drenched in reverb the bands sole consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of melody, all to make music in magical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Lacey vetoed the idea of learning music theiry at all.; they made sure the band would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, Just a faux deep chick rock band marketing the ‘handsome’ looks of the front man to underage women . Brand new’s music might be feminine (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-AC/Dc in its refusal of passion, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time some seemingly random directionless arpeggio was buried in reverb. . I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Brand New listeners mind‘s are so governed by nostalgia and lust that they have no sense of what Brand New is. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Brand New by Anthony Fantano.. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are Loving Brand new on Reddit then when they get to YouTube they will go on to watch Anthony Fantano." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you listen to Brand New you are, in fact, trained to watch Anthony Fantano
