California is as relevant as NYC.

The South, especially the Deep South, produced many notable country singers, blues singers, and 1950's rock artists. Some important later rock artists came from the South as well, namely R.E.M. (who were foundational in forming alternative rock).

Lots of important rock bands came from the Midwest, particularly Ohio.
