I want to buy my gal something really nice for her bday and was thinking of upgrading her old audio technica lpx to a technics sl1500c. I know nothing about hi-fi so if this a good step up or overkill? The deal i'm looking at will also come with a pair of airpulse a100, all for $1900USD.

Hey, great high-res picture, you fucking spad. Upload something we can see or go to Haiti.
>>
>>124473850
Does SHE know anything about hi-fi? Because if not, what's the point of spending so much cash on something she might not really be interested in?

probably not, but she appreciates music and records enough to have a decent vinyl collection as well as telling her friends to not buy crossley's.
I'm hoping to get her a decent enough setup to blow her mind with the difference in sound quality, that'll also last a long time
>>
>>124474167
This. If she's not an audophile she won't notice the difference from one to the other. A needle upgrade might have more impact.
Also consider aesthetics. Women are funny about that.

$500 Fluance RT85 with Ortofon blue is a great value. The cart is worth 250 on its own. Speakers would be your weak link.

I would recommend getting her a less expensive turntable, and then also getting her a decent preamp. You can check electronics discount websites for refurbished stuff that is discounted, or good record store could sell you a nice vintage preamp, if she likes stuff like that. Might make her think you put some serious thought into her gift. Hope she tongues your balls real good whatever you get her.

Are audiophiles just autistic sound enjoyers? I kinda owe her a new turntable anyway since my cat uses her old one as a bed and cracked the dust cover and thought she could use an upgrade anyway.
Are there any other turntables/speakers you'd recommend that could be a step up from an AT lp60(not an lpx to correct the op) and bose desktop speakers?
With the combo i picked, i thought it would be nice since it'll give her options to upgrade down the line if she does want to get into hi-fi by getting a phono preamp, better cartridge, better speakers etc down the road.

>Are audiophiles just autistic sound enjoyers?
Yes. I'm the guy who recommended the fluance. I doubt many people can tell the difference between 0.05% wow and flutter and 0.07%. I can't. Someone else recommended a decent preamp and I think that's not a bad idea. The ortofon blue cartridge is actually awesome and imo will have the biggest impact. Fluance will sell you a preamp and speakers but I don't know anything about them. Just my 2 dollar bills.

A platter weight is nice to have for warped records. If she has a lot of old albums it would be useful.
>>
>>124474276
I did consider something like fluance or pro-ject but they require a little more autism than i think she's willing to put into it by requiring choosing a matching phono, needing to swap belts and all that.
To me, the technics, though more expensive, takes a lot of the guess work out of starting while still offering an available upgrade path IF she decides she wants to jump deeper into the hobby(defeatable built in phono, swappable headshell).
I'm open to something that would offer similar features but at a more palatable price of course.

I would def not upgrade the needle on the LP-60, that’s for sure. You can get a denon dp400, an amp, and speakers, for the price of that turntable you posted. It wouldn’t be any harder to setup than the lp60

Thanks for the suggestion. Would pic rel be a better option in terms of overall sound/value? It's definitely a lot cheaper of a package at $1200
>>
>>124474486
>denon dp400
Fluance guy again. I looked at the denon also and was into it, but chose the fluance for some reason. I think the price was a little bit lower and everything else seemed comparable. The dust cover on the denon is weird and has to be removed to play the table. With cats that's a deal breaker.
>>124474504
I should think so. Again, I really don't know much about speakers. They also offer the small bookcase style speakers if you prefer that, and you can always mix and match brands.

If I were to go with pro-ject and get her this combo, what are some decent powered speakers I could look into?
>>
>>124474486
Just now looking into denons and they seem pretty nice. Do you know how they compare to fluance, pro-ject and technics?
>>
>>124474504
get this, the full size speakers will make way more of an impact to the sound, even if they are half shit.
>>
>>124474343
Hi-Fi depends on the quality of the recording, the loudspeakers (including the placement) and the acoustics of the room. An AT-LP60X is more than enough to deliver the audio goods, don't listen to those hardware peddlers audiophooliacs.
>>
>>124474800
>the full size speakers will make way more of an impact to the sound
this is correct. your best, most impressive and most future proof result would be investing more in the speakers than the turntable. something like wharfedale lintons + yamaha as301/501 + her current turntable (maybe with a better cartidge) will blow her mind and yours

>>124477162
I don’t think you can upgrade the cartridge on an lp60 though
>>
>>124474438
Fluance doesn't have the autism belt.
>>
>>124474641
Not sure if you’re still reading this thread OP but try accessories 4 less, or even reverb. You can find a nice pair of speakers to go with that setup.
>>
>>124474800
i'll definitely try to put more effort into the speakers. any brand recommendations within around $800-1000 but my overall budget would probably be the $1800 i was originally looking for. of course less is better though.
>>124475655
i made a mistake and its actually an lp60, no x. but yea i guess i need to focus on speakers. i have no idea what i'm lookin for when it comes to phono-preamps though. and i'm thinking of powered speakers to keep things somewhat minimal.
>>124479214
I thought it did have a belt??
>>124480426
thanks, i'll check it out

>any brand recommendations within around $800-1000
check out erin's audio corner on youtube, he's the most level headed non-audiofool speaker reviewer i've found. he's probably made a list of best ~$1000 speakers
>>
>>124481177
>I thought it did have a belt??
It has a belt, but there are some turntables where you have to physically move the belt on the motor to adjust speed. Fluance uses a dial (33/45) because the belt thing is retarded. I think the Pro-jects require you to move the belt.
