Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon [Warner Bros., 1971]If even Taylor's diehard supporters have acknowledged that his music has lost its drive (lost its _drive_?), then even a sworn enemy can acknowledge that he's capable of interesting, intricate material. Old bluesmen spent much of their lives on the road; although they often got into it, Taylor is an egotist, plain and simple. A born-rich noveau star, he feels moved to switch between a down-home homestead (what does he raise there? hopes?) and the Holiday Inn, compelled by the self-pitying, conniving voice that is his curse. Having used up most of his big songs on the debut, the material here is more onanistic and escapist, the themes self-conscious by default. Interesting, intricate, unlistenable. C
