This record is a lot worse than my dispassionate grade would indicate because, I mean really, don't we all expect better? From The Who, no less? Pete Townshend has more to say about star doubt than David Crosby or John Lennon, but the apercus, namely "Dreaming From The Waist" and "Wherever I May Booze", merely circles the drain. I don't expect the seeker to have the answers, but I do at least expect him to enjoy the question. B
>>124478752christgau is right. a solid 3.5. hioghlights: squeeze box and slip kid
This is really a fan album, hence the title. If you weren't a Who fan before this album, this album won't convert you into one. It's not their best, but it's criminally marginalized and overlooked.Look, everything after Success Story sucks, I'll admit it, so let's get that out of the way, but every song prior to it, with the exception of the over played Squeeze Box is GOAT, and even Squeeze Box is OK, if only for the double entendres, but, as I said before, it's been way too over played.Sorry, but I think However Much I Booze, and Dreaming From The Waist are GOAT.Slip Kid is a powerful opener.
>>124479835>Look, everything after Success Story sucksBlue, Red and Grey and How Many Friends are the best songs tho
>>124479895blue red and grey might be the best song townsend wrote
Squeeze Box was literally just a throwaway joke song Pete made and he never did figure out how it became a US hit.
>>124479835hey, Pete admitted he had nothing left in the tank after Quadrophenia
>>124480366One of Paul Simon’s hits got censored for radio because he said “crap” one time, but apparently they weren’t averse to playing a song with obvious sex euphemisms and a title that literally means “tight pussy”.
>>124480366he was like (paraphrasing) "so i bought an accordion, learned to play it, and wrote the song as a dirty joke. somehow we recorded it and it became a US hit. don't ask me why though."
>>124480472Lady Marmalade had the phrase "I want to have sex with you" in French as the chorus, as the song wouldn't get on the radio were it in English so you tell me.
>>124480472I'm pretty sure it meant "Big Tits" since the lyrics literally say."Mama's got a squeeze box she wears on her chest"
>>124480328>>124480328They're OK, but not really what I'd gravitate towards.
>>124478752How Ever much I booze and Blue red and grey are great enough for me to appreciate the album. 2 of my favorite Who songs ever. Booze is a great confessional track that has a great melody and fun rhythm, blue red and grey is honestly very beautiful. Love that Smiley Smile influenced him with thathow many friends is also a good confessional track. Squeeze box is silly but catchy and I like it. Overplayed though. Imagine a man is also a beauty. Very underrated song. The rest I barely remember
>>124482904Dreaming from the Waist is incredible.
>>124478752They probably are the most overrated band out there, the only interesting member was John Entwistle.
Who's Next will always be a top 5 album ever for me, but this one was surprisingly a lot better than I was expecting.
>>124483153retard
>>124482993And there are some real ripper live performances of it
Their best album by a country mile
>>124483153I'm sure there's some gay band you like that is not only overrated but absolute garbage and worthless
