Molina editionWelcome to /cmg/. The old thread >>127482936 was taken from us too soon, so I decided to bring it back rather than wait for Lostgrass Anon to do it himself. Decided to mostly leave the OP as he had it all the same.https://voca.ro/1hlf5nBdqd2TPlease use this thread to discuss country music and all of its related genres, including bluegrass, jamgrass, outlaw country, Red Dirt country, country-rock, folk, alternative country, and many more.>/cmg/ Essential Album Charts (in progress) / What Is Country Music?https://imgur.com/a/cmg-rINi8oK>Lostgrass Archive (obscure bluegrass & country rips)https://pastebin.com/1vamLC3WYourLast.fmlistening charts are highly encouraged!Feel free to drop any recommendations below, no matter the subgenre (but please do attach subgenres to it!). We are in the long and intermittent process of compiling updated recommendation charts, so your contributions will be very appreciated. And I don't know what you been spinning anons, but you can't go wrong with Molina (RIP):https://youtu.be/eGN2FHgww24
Twinkly garbage from the 70s and 80s is awful trash and the corny 90s shit is way better
>>127493374My knowledge of '70s and '80s country isn't what I'd like it to be, but I find '90s country, at least its most popular interactions, to be rather same. Every man sounds like George Strait. Not that such is necessarily a bad thing, but there's more out there, and it deserves to flourish to show the world what the possibilities are:https://youtu.be/lAj-Q_W9AT4
Updated modern country chart
Still have to give Zach Bryan a listen. If he's as good as Childers and Crockett, he'll be right up my alley.
Found out about James King from Billy Strings GQ profile. Amazing musician. A true musical storyteller. Gone too soon at 57:https://youtu.be/y13r2nzwdV0
>>127493953Definitely like this piece of Zach's:https://youtu.be/HL6osaiYTP4
>>127493318the fire risesLGA here thanks for picking up my slack. /cmg/ is eternal
>>127493557Man I love it, my only thing is Highway Prayers kinda sucks ass. Home is a far better Billy Strings album
I also want to get some insight from y'all about something.I recently picked up a lot of stuff from thrift stores while traveling out west (US) and there's some interesting looking red dirt-ish country in there.I started LostgrassArchive as a way for me to preserve all the bluegrass music I was finding here in Appalachia, but eventually I started including other sttuff, like that album by a Wisconsin band called The Hay Shakers. Now, my question to anyone who cares:Should I try to keep is mainly to albums from Appalachia (bluegrass, southern gospel, folk) or should I just start including all obscure country-adjacent music regardless of where it's from?I like the idea of "grass" representing the lost "grassroots" rather than just pure "bluegrass". Not sure if I'm overthinking this or not, I just get really autistic about things and I care about preserving these obscure pieces of media.
Im getting that feeling, anonsAny worthwhile Christmas country?
>>127493557It's funny that Little Sonhs is the go to Colter on here. Unconventional pic, but respectable.
>read up on Jason Molina after discovering his music>the last decade of his life is some of the saddest shit I've ever readDude just entirely lost the will to live at some point
>>127493318The imgur link isnt working
>>127493374Meaning what
>>127494608>>127494751Both were actually requests. I wanted it to be a mix of personal choices and popular consensus picks. I myself would've used Western Swing for Colter, and I admit I'm not a Strings aficionado.
Why don't /mu/ like us /cmg/??? :(
>>127495353We just need a concerted /cmg/ propaganda effort across all of /mu/ and 4chan as a whole. 4chan operates solely on psyops. Repeated viewing of something solidifies it in the viewers head. We just havent been active enough in spreading the psyop. When I get home I will fix this Imgur link but anyone feel free to create posters here. Good propaganda is typically square images with a universal truth in big text, shit like that. Idk I’m kinda fuckin baked beans right now.
I will do my best to keep the thread alive. I figure if /mu/ can keep a lively classical thread, there's more than enough room for country.
>>127494735Plenty. But this is what most comes to mind for me now:https://youtu.be/syS9wU1Sr8A
>>127494686You have a lot of options. You can always start another "show", so to speak, on your channel. But you can always start another channel.
>>127496308I think I’m just going to start including obscure “grassroots” country-adjacent music of all kinds.
>>127495900I remember in the pre-cmg days if you tried posting about any of the modern top-shelfers Sturgill or Tyler or Isbell or Stapleton the automatic response would always be "hurr this is shitty hipster country real country died in the 70s david allan coe for life faggot". These were the first regular threads where you could talk about this stuff constructively.
>>127494735Not strictly country but Chris is countryish enough. This is unironically my favorite Xmas album of all time. You could roast chestnuts on the warmth of this thing.
Anybody familiar with Shakey Graves? He has something of a following, but I've only just heard of the guy. Wish I knew of him earlier. He was playing near me not all that long ago, but I didn't know enough to prioritize the ticket:https://youtu.be/fEw9ofXnpGE
>>127494808What even happened
I unironically like this version better than Kenny’shttps://youtu.be/hCVe11AX7Uk?si=B0_h1EaL5XWxM9Tu
>>127494122I just saw Billy Strings a few weeks ago. I'll admit to not being that familiar, but I was surprised at the following of Deadheads at the show. They were even selling Grateful Dead merch in the parking lot. Really good show, except there was a constant dim roar of people talking loudly in the whole arena. Must be getting old.>>127497348Love Shakey Graves. I'm generally don't listen to much country or USA folk, but he's doing something I really like. Raw, one takes, live sets. I love the way he puts together albums and EPs.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke_BD6VbYcY
>>127493318hell yeah
Looking into an alternative for image hosting for the OP text. Instead I'll dump them here since >>127494891 asked.
>>127496776I'm honestly glad we've cultivated such a good community of country loving motherfuckers here. There is no shame in loving country music and I think we're finally starting to turn the tides. I've always been a believer in "If you build it, they will come" and country music charts were almost nonexistent, and the ones that do exist sucked ass and were well over a decade old. So I figured why the hell not make some new ones and see if I can attract some likeminded people in here. And I'm glad that it happened because I'm thankful for all of you fuckers. Found a lot of good recs, learned a lot about the genre, and probably taught a little bit about the genre, and that makes me feel happy.
Aaaand to stay true to my roots, here's one for Eastern Kentucky.
>>127498881I'm working on expending this chart. Don't have any additions but suggestions are always welcome.
>>127493318Nice general, haven't seen it before. My favourite Songs: Ohia album proper is probably Impala, if you count The Ghost and Protection Spells as tour albums, but my favourite release overall is Our Golden Ratio, more people should listen to it, it's amazing.>127493557like canadian country here? Sweet, that's good to see. I know The Sheepdogs aren't strictly country, but Bowskill released this album with his wife not too long ago, I thought it was really nice.
To whoever suggested Guy Clark in one of these threads a while ago, thanks for that. Listened to Dublin Blues and enjoyed it quite a bit
SHOTGUN WILLIE SITS AROUND IN HEES UNDERWEAR
Billy has the most ethereal looking photo here, but that Sturgill pic goes hard as fuck.
>>127494686i wouldn't put music with drums in it under bluegrass if that's what you're asking
>>127500069A single snare drum and I'd still count it, but certainly not anything with a kit.YouTube's Marcel has a pretty good definition, I think:https://youtu.be/AR_3DRGVqdQ
>>127499173It's been posted a few times for a couple months, but it's had trouble surviving more than a day, and I still don't recall if one's ever gotten into three digits.Let's make this one be the start of a new trend.
>>127502126Even if a bit of shameless bumping is what it takes!
bump
>>127499173Started listening to Impala right now. I can already tell this'll be an amazing record."Tonight I am gambling / With my sentiment / Tonight I am gambling / With my repentance / Tonight I am losing / In a crowded room"
>>127497368have you listened to his music? Jason was clearly not having the best time here
>>127494735Hard Candy Christmas by Dolly
>>127493318i just got into him a few days ago. there are so many songwriters were you can tell they have to effort themselves to write sad music, even great ones. maybe im projecting, but you can tell the guy was not happy very often. some of the most moving music ive heard, i want to tear thru his catalog but the music does put me into a pretty awful mood but he is incredible
>>127493318https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UofYl3dataU&pp=ygUXc28gZmFyIGF3YXkgY2Fyb2xlIGtpbmc%3D
>>127500069>>127501277I appreciate the good discussion, but this was not what I was asking. I’m familiar with genre distinctions. My question was whether or not LGA should remain a bluegrass archive, or if I should expand it to include other “grassroots” music (with grassroots music being a combination of the hyper-obscure and American roots music). I don’t want to split my efforts in sourcing and archiving music between too many channels, ya know?
>>127493318emo countryhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMmkACdbQc0
>>127505357Since you're collecting stuff that's still fairly tied in, I'd just keep 'em all there and use separate playlists to keep the various grassroots genres separate.
>>127504945So hard to pick a favourite track, but I love Program: The Mask, the shorter songs on this album are astonishing, not a second wasted.
I can't stop listening to Snipe Hunter. It feels like this album was made specifically for me. It's my favorite album of this decade already.>>127505632Good call! That's the way I'm leaning right now.

When and why did "country & western" stop being a common label?
>>127505467https://youtu.be/BqBrZqPex-Y
>>127506511Adding western just sounds gay. No need for it. It’s all country music and all welcome here.

>>127499173Listening to Brooks and Bowskill right now. This album. They're great! Can't believe how small their following is. Downright criminal.

how we feelin about this
>>127521066I respect George but I never connected with his music that much. It's spartan classic country but it never grabbed me. Everyone says he was the GOAT country vocalist but imo Merle had the true golden pipes.

>>127534534Never really liked him. He's always seemed contrived to me.
Listening to a Woody Guthrie tribute album I found. Never realized how influential he actually was. Everyone always talks about his influence but he's just so ubiquitous in country and folk-adjacent music that you don't even recognize it.
Shadowgrass fuckin RIPS.
