Thoughts on roller bridges? The Achilles heel of my Gretsch is the crappy bridge so I wanted an upgrade anyway. Do they really negatively impact sustain?
My Bigsby is not that bad at keeping in tune but I would use it more often if the roller saddles make an improvement.

That's the first I've heard of roller saddles sucking tone.
I'm a Fender guy though... don't even have a guitar like that at the moment, but it always seemed to me that Gibsons and Gretsches always had less points of "tone suckage" and generally a fatter tone. Just that Gretsches also go for a little more twang in the pups than Gibson.

I want to stay versatile. I already have an H-P90 guitar, so my next one should be HSS. Having a humbucker in the bridge position is essential for distorted sounds.

I have narrowed it down to a Yamaha Pacifica 112VMX and an Aria 615 GH. On the Aria, I'd swap the singlecoil for a humbucker in single coil format, which means it will cost even more, but I prefer its Tele shape. I like the natural finish on the Yamaha more. Has anyone played any of these? I am paranoid that the guitar I receive will have shitty fret-ends, uneven frets or other issues.

I swore to visit that huge Thomann shop when buying my next guitar, but they don't have the Aria. I also read that it's awkward and all of the "booths" to test stuff are always occupied.
>>
>>127633483
I like my own wear and tear on it. I don't need things to stay pristine. I just don't want a premade relic. Although it would be cool if I was handed some old guitar from a player I liked. But I'm not that worthy.
>>
>>127632875
Ideally there would be a rail system where you can move the pickup to any position you want.
>>
After a few months of playing I'm now at the obsession phase of getting rhythm down
>>
>>127633528
I have played that 112 for a bit, it's mostly fine nothing sticks out as terrible, but the finish looks kinda cheap and the neck is really narrow so take that into consideration
For the Aria you're shit outta luck, it's a pretty niche brand in the US especially the latest models

i'll tell you two secrets no one ever talks about: the more rhythmically interesting you play, the less melodically interesting it needs to be. and the faster you play, melodic information becomes less discernible. don't tell anyone

rhythm is a nebulous concept. sometimes it can be explained simply as the duration and frequency of notes being played or more of an overarching feel of an entire arrangement. melody is a combination of pitch and rhythm or more specifically timing of the pitches

> neck is really narrow
I like them thick and wide, because I learned on a classical guitar. But how come some electric necks are narrower or wider, if all of them have a nut width of approximately 42mm?

I've read and watched more reviews of the Pacifica 112 and I've seen complaints about buzz on the G string and people said it's because of missing string trees and bad nuts. I guess I can replace the nut (already practiced on my other guitar), but I'd hate to buy a drill just to add new string trees. I've also stumbled upon some Cort 260SE and Larry Carlton S7FM, but the reviews also complained about similar issues.
I even extended my budget up to 1000€, but the higher end guitars aren't offered in the colours I like. I have only bought 2 guitars in my life so far and both have been bought blindly. Both turned out okay, but I'm still worried about getting a bad one.

>>
>>127634611
if it makes you nod your head or tap your foot it's rhythmically satisfying, if it drives the emotion of the song it's rhythmically interesting. the good example i had is what's going on by marvin gaye. james jamerson plays a different rhythm over each part of the song and gives them a different sort of feel that jives with the lyrics. in my opinion anyway

the whole acoustic senpai. Gretsch Jim Dandy Special Edition parlor solid spruce top, Gretsch concert body with laminate top, and Yamaha FG800M, solid spruce top. I love them dudes.
>>
>>127634611
It helps when the drummer is a Stewart Copeland. Then you realize what everyone else is doing to keep up with him is cool too.
But a guitarist can have an equally cool sense of rhythm and make the whole band amazing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjvvK-Rj0WI&list=RDTjvvK-Rj0WI
I've known the parts of this song for years, but still have a hard time making these transitions. Weird fingerings and transitions. It sounds simpler than it is.
>>
>>127634644
i think guns n' roses is another good example. they played very solid rhythm, like sweet child of mine where it changes between swung half notes and driving eighths etc. there's a time and place for everything like you wouldn't change a shuffle or a waltz very much but i just wouldn't use chugging or pedaling as good examples of inspiration because it's fundamentally a bit basic. not bad just not much to learn from it, once you've played one song that does it you've played them all
>>
>>127634675
very nice. keep picking brother. i've never played the other two but those fg800s punch way above their bracket
>>
>>127634730
thanks, the other two are inexpensive as well, but the parlor has some serious midrange punch and I'm about to put a pickup in it and the concert body. The concert is warmer and a bit bassier imo than the fg and has more character, but the fg's appeal is it has a very neutral and clean character. So the FG is my favorite.
>>
I've thought of getting one of those Gretsches. They got a Collings vibe, but way way cheaper and don't have to pamper it. I have a Martin, but I don't want to baby all my guitars.
>>
>>127634791
No harm in going in and trying them out, might find one you really gel with. The parlor took me a little while cause it feels like a toy in your hands but I love it now
>>
>>127634855
Yeah, a parlor sounds fun.
>>
>>127634881
they're amazing for fingerstyle, my only complaint is you can't put a capo too far up unless your hands are tiny. 5th or 6th fret capo and your hands will be bunched up like crazy
>>
>>127634791
even if you didn't play it the neck would eventually bow in anyway and need a reset, so might as well play it. oddly enough guitars sound better when they have a cracked soundboard repair.

You guys seein' this?
>>
No way.
>>
My dad has a '70-'75 Gibson 355 TD made in Kalamazoo, the ones Chuck Berry used, in the original case. the neck needs to be set but its otherwise in good shape. a broker wants to do the neck via his Nashville connections "I've sold guitars to Eric Clapton" "my guys work on Vince Gills stuff", but says that it's only worth $6k after the work is done(that may take a couple months hunting for a buyer) of which he wants 15% as a fee. I think $6k is too low for something like that this day and age, especially if he's only to expect $4,100 or so back, but the broker says that "there are no generous buyers" as in they are very particular about what they buy. I think as is, it's worth the $6 and with the neck it ought be no less than $10k.

Am I crazy or are they crazy?

the neck is bowed somewhat, so its position needs to be rest. the asking price on my listing is $5,500 with some wiggle room and the range for ones in this condition are $5k-$7k, but they sit around on reverb and sweetwater and the like, so not out of the ordinary. the broker used to own his own music store until the late 90s and retired since and seems to know his shit, but it just sounds like he's carving a bigger part out of my dad's pie for himself. I mean the broker is 80 for fucks sake, what do you need an extra couple bucks for? his wife said not to bring anymore guitars home since he just got back from some expo in Texas so it's not personal.

how do I actually learn how to solo?

right now I just go to youtube, type "blues backing track in the key of whatever' and start messing around with a pentatonic

don't get me wrong, the result is not awful. it sounds "right", but also aimless and basic. it's not captivating music.

should I just keep going at it and it will eventually click? or should I make a deliberate effort at improving some areas of soloing, like diversity in rhythm, including riffs, etc?
>>
>>127639628
worked for garnet herzog which was pretty much a champ
>>
>>127639630
add random notes in between essentially every note between the notes in the pentatonic can be slipped in for taste if you're good enough.
Also try just plain drum tracks that way you are the entire melody and rhythm
>>
>>127639578
dragging and then rushing
>>
>>127639630
if you look up the chords of what you're playing, try leaning on the 1st/3rd/5th of that chord. like you're just using the other scale notes to get to them. if you are outlining the chords with the notes you solo with, it sounds more musical.
jazz dudes do it with lots of wack chords but the same applies for any kind of music.

you could try the 'singing what you play' thing, to help you stop and think about what you're going to play, rather than just playing whatever.

you could also try playing your solo on just one string, it can break up the habits of playing the same shapes and forces you to play less notes. fun to try for a bit
