is it blasphemy to the gibson boomers if i want to solder a ground wire into my les paul
>>127640732They don’t have ground wires? How do they stay grounded then?
still out of stock
>>127640740there's a ground wire in the saddle post bushing yes

is it true that if you want the hottest single coil pickups for example, then you’ll have to wind your own?If not, then what are the absolute hottest ones I can get?
Having gaps between your pickups is just wasted space

>>127641211yes but as you get better your floor and ceiling will both get higher

>>127641254yes, it was a joke for spinal tap
I don't even like my middle pickup. I use position 4 to get rid of the hum, if there was no hum I'd stay on the neck.
>>127641254Yeah how dare they make a limited edition guitar for Spinal Tap and a Cancer foundation

>>127640980I'm sure they make him plenty of custom shop models still. They don't necessarily need to make money from mass building. His presence provides a little advertising and general Gibson awareness and pays off the cost of his individual builds.
>>127641992i sure did. glad i was here for it
>>127632116Bad idea. Had to dremel the side wings to lower action, plus strings pop out of the saddles constantly. Never stayed in tune either, the saddles didn't roll with the pressure on them. I bought nut sauce and it stays in tune now with the stock bridge.

you don't understand i NEED the 7th string
>>127642059It gets in the way of any band formula I care for. It's much cooler alone. We always want more oomph and bass alone.

Dick Dale and Television are the ideal Fender sounds in my head. Not Jimi or SRV. Those two used Marshalls and in the case of SRV, sometimes a Dumble. Same with Blackmore, same with Beck...both Marshall guys. Hell, almost everyone big was a Fender+Marshall guy. Awesome as they all are.
>>127642152It was a Korean bridge. For my Korean made Tri Five Gretsch
>>127642202It sure as fuck was not if it was on scamazon at a lower than usual price.

>>127642182>Dick Dale and Television are the ideal Fender soundsPartly because Leo made Dick's amp heads and cabs personally, just for him.And Dick used to play with ridiculously heavy string gauges (.016 - .060), it felt like having a Strat strung with overhead telephone cables.
>>127642402Yeah, he's kind of the equivalent of Pete Townsend for Marshall. Verlaine and Lloyd got no love from Fender or Fender fans for years, but to me, Marquee Moon is the most glorious Fender tones of them all. Outside of that, there isn't actually a lot of famous Fender guitar+amp pairings except in country. I don't know why that is. You'd see a lot of Fender/Gibson with Marshall. Or when someone had a Fender amp, then they had a Gibson guitar like Neil Young. Or Brian Setzer and his Gretsch+Bassman (like a lot of rockabilly). Also, Verlaine live and a cranked Super Reverb is monstrous. Nothing like the albums.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASCf0yLku7o

Does wood matter on electric guitars?
>>127643034No, unless we're trying to sell you fancy wood.
>>127643034For tone, no. It matters for your feel preferences (up to you) and maintenance. I'm always crapping on basswood guitars here because it's a softer wood. Some people do just fine with it and many pros have sigs with it. So it's just my 2c. It just strips easy in my experience. You don't want to mess with joints and screwing parts in and out too much. You'll eventually find wood crumbs coming out and need a way to seal the hole better.Ebony fretboards are easier to maintain than others, since they resist wear and oil and dirt accumulation better than others. They also feel better, in my experience. But none of this has to do with "tonewoods". Tonewoods only apply to acoustic instruments.
>>127643067anon is lying to you, anon
>>127643034Alder is picked because it's light, durable, and cheap to procure especially in California. That's all that matters for electrics.
>>127643067bbut how "tonewoods" may apply to acoustic instruments?
>>127643034Sound-wise not at all, 0%.In terms of weight and solidity it's important to have a light but dense wood for if you want to screw shit in. Depends what you're looking for, if you're bridge is fixed or if you want a trem back there. There must be a middle ground, I'm sure you'll find info on which is the best for what you're trying to achieve. But in terms of sustain, warmth, etc. it's all absolute bullshit. The sound comes from the electronic components.
>>127643274Why the sound that comes from the guitars with similar electronic components is different?
>>127643300Nta but could be any number of things. The same type of pickups could have more or less winds, different height, amp could be different, same amp with different speakers, etc
>>127643034Not so much as the timbre that you perceive coming out your speakers - but more of the density of the neck wood affecting a wolf/dead note specifically in the unwound g string. Think of it as a tuning fork in that there will be a pitch that will be its resonant frequency. But that doesn't really matter much in the greater scheme of things.
>>127643312Why the sound that comes from the guitars with same electronic components and amplification is different?
>>127641241I've been thinking that as well slap some jazz bass pickups in your guitar and off you go
>>127643415I would love a guitar with the jazz bass layout and 2 volume 1 tone. I guess a stacked knob could do the same thing but I like them seperate.
>>127643300Different amp, different mic placement...Similar doesn't mean the same. Electronics, even with minute differences, create enormously different sounds. Case in point my partscaster I had to change one tone pot, from 250k to 50k (not 500k) it's a completely different guitar, pickups and other tone pot didn't change.Glenn Fucker did a video where he tested different woods with the same electronics, same pickups, same amp same settings, same mic placement, etc. nothing touched except the wood. Oh and also the player tried to play the exact same riff. Well the audio spectrum was similiar 99% and it was absolutely impossible to tell the different types of wood apart. Not sure it was Glenn but another youtuber who did more or less the same experiment but he also didn't put any wood on his guitar, just the electronics suspended in thin air, and he achieved the same result.>>127643354Nigga why is the sky blue just play your guitar now stop asking questions.
why buy a jag if your just going to tape over the controls
The meteora looks neat. I wished they offered picrel instead of only the ebony fretboard with ultraburst though.
>>127643509>gold plate, silver hardware, cream pickup ringspick a lane fender
>>127643473rule of cool
>>127643541I really wish they had a "build a bear" section on their site, without needing to go the custom shop route, so you could put together what you actually want. I'm sure they'd have to charge a nominal restocking fee due to returns but they're lego guitars. Let the people choose what they want.
>>127642286its based on a real storyor at least a bunch of real storiesa lot of the jokes are literally just about jeff beck, reportedly
^ mad cus bad
>>127643592make it so people can choose from like 20 combinations of parts and if like 50 people preorder a particular one then they make that run of guitars. should be easy
>>127643592just buy a squier and do it urself they
>>127643619>just buy a squierNo thanks
>>127643733ok and buying an overpriced fender only to gut it and swap out all the parts is better somehow?
>>127643757>only to gut it and swap out all the parts is better somehow?Where did I say that I was planning to do that? I said I wished they offered the ultraburst meteora with a maple board, and that it would be cool if they offered a "select your specs" program on their website.
>>127643768theyre not gonna do that thothey want you to buy custom shop shit cuz its more dosh for them that wayyou got two real options>buy the parts separately and put it together>by a meh guitar and swap it out with good partsor just go full retard and buy a nice guitar, then rip it apart. but its pretty clear thats the worst of the available decisions. youre just burning an extra $1k for no reasongo with the indogsthe indog squiers are solid. more solid than what ive seen from the mexi/cali plants latelyof course indonesia is literally on fire rn, so maybe not RIGHT now

What's the consensus on anodized aluminum pickguard?
>>127643989im not gonna use a plastic pickguard again tbphits just a thing that can break. with no advantage. esp noticeable on JMs which have the input going right into pure plastic. but with a metal pickguard? no problems
>>127644019My concern is the pick scratches would be more prominent than plastic
>>127644044idk i dont think it makes a difference at allor at least i havent noticed itbut i also dont rly do them that muchjust use a compressoryou should just have a compressor anyways, to be frank
>>127644075I mean the physical scratches on the surface of the pickguard not the sound of it getting transmitted through the amp (though now that I think about that might be a possible issue)

What’s the total cable length you’d want for a guitar to an amp? Are there any complications with having a cable over a certain length? Also, do cable brands matter? What do you recommend?
>>127644087unless you got microphonic pickups it rly shouldnt make a huge diff in soundhell, i even have a JM that has goldmemes in it and i still dont notice itif you mean like aesthetically? then yea it gets scratched up a bitkinda looks cool tho imo. you end up with this large curved scuff mark that subtly reflects off stage lights. i think it looks pretty cool
>>127644112It’s on my list. A semi hollow Jazzmaster with F hole, humbucker/soap bar with a rhythm circuit, maple neck in polar white with matching headstock. Maybe a blue racing stripe from bridge to back strap button.

>>127644126you do actually lose some output if youre going through like 50ft of extra cable you dont need (or like a hundred pedals, but then you can boost it at the end and its back to """normal""")i like having 5-10 extra ft from my amp to my mic at the front of the stage. depends how much you move around and how much your bandmates/audience move around tho.if youre worried about shit getting yanked out, just get one of those combat cords (idk what the real name is for them). the little squiggly ones that stretch and look like a spring. that way if some retard tries to stage dive and steps on your cord it wont yank shit outthe only "brand" that rly matters that much ime is monster, and thats only because they have a lifetime warranty. not that anyone ever gets to collect on that. ive never had a monster cable that didnt just get stolen after x amount of timeif youre broke just grab broken cables and solder new parts to em. you can even wrap a bunch of that extra heatshrink stuff around the ends of them and make them more sturdy than some of the actual store-bought cablestl;drless is more. just dont go overboard (in either direction). give yourself a little extra wiggle room, but not 50ft extra
>>127644230It'd just get smashed instead
>>127644126Doesn't matter when using a buffer
>>127644126As long as the cable is of decent quality you can easily go like 9 meters without any loss of signal quality. You could probably go way more than 15 in most cases without noticeable signal loss.> what length would you wantPersonally I like 2m for everyday use and practice. And 6m has been enough for me for most other things (band practice, gigs) before I switched to wireless for that.> do cable brands matter?Yes but only noname low end crap vs. a somewhat reputable brand that uses decent materials.Premium high end cables are just snakeoil.Really crappy cables however can fuck up your signal due to bad shielding and such. But will probably also be fine in most cases. Even chink shit is ok these days.
>>127644230make your strings out of diamonds so the bridge and nut stop breaking your strings
just buy your own tips and cable, learn to solder, its 2 connections at each end of the cable ezpz.buy cabling thats half-decent and you're set.dont use coil-y telephone cables, its adding a tonne of length, degrading your signal and the elastic action means they always pull on the ends of the cable so they rarely last very long

>>127644112I can't be trusted around guitar parts
>>127644320NTA but 10 is more than enough for both cables.
>>127644320its a bit much if youre just playing bars. on a small stage, thats just 15-20ft more "shit you/your singer might trip over"but if its like a bigger ballroom or a festival, it might not be enough. so it rly depends.and again, how heavy is the music? theres a lot more irl variables when youre playing some crazy metal/punk gig than if youre at some chill jamband/lot kid festivalthe former you want some extra slack in case something retarded happens
>>12764412620 feet unbuffered is max recommended until signal attenuation starts being degraded, this is similar to network cables dropping packets at 100+ feet. >>127644339This, partscasters were fun when they were cheap. Nowadays they’re only cheap when you’re using alibaba tier junk parts, and for the cost of a half decent partscaster you can buy a used American Fender or new Mexican Fender.

How long does it take for a nitro finish neck to wear down? I figure the neck is the quickest finished part to wear other than the back of the body because that’s the part that gets the most contact with hands. I’m thinking about getting a Les Paul Special and those have finish on the back of their necks, and I want that finish worn down to bare wood but I don’t want to fake it with sandpaper.
>>127644411>>127644276>>127644383So maybe you think 10ft on the cable connecting my guitar to the pedals, a few short pedal connecting cables, and maybe like a 5ft cable for connecting my pedals to the amp?

>>127645252The pedals are like network hubs or switches they'll repeat the signal in and pass it down the line. So you can do another 20 feet after each pedal but that impractical for most use cases
>>127645361does every pedal strengthen the signal?I thought you need a pedal with a buffer for that
I'm just going to stick a wire of copper between each pedal and call it a day
>>127645370No in fact some can color or suck signal even when not engaged (especially if components are older or starting to fail like caps), which is why some people only want true bypass pedals. Truth be told both ends of the spectrum are overblown but if you're worried about it just pick up the cheapest used boss pedal at your local shop and throw it at the end of your pedal chain.

>>127646327If you're the anon who was confused why his cheap soldering iron wasn't working properly, I hope you at least bought a roll of quality solder as well as all of that.
Isn’t good solder made of lead?
>>127648966why does "good" solder matter? all that matters is that it makes a connection
>>127649023Yes
>>127649023tin lowers melting point which helps it flow better and i think it's a little more thermally conductive. melting pure lead is globby and doesn't stay liquid very long. i think it would also just fall apart if it was extruded as thin as solder
>>127649065sorry i guess i missed the point of the question. yeah lead free solder sucks but solder is more tin than lead
>>127649032Because the bad quality stuff doesn't stick to anything and if it does, it breaks easily. I thought my cheap iron was broken until I went to the hardware store and bought a $5 roll of solder and suddenly soldering just werked.
>>127649126yeah look how dull that cheap shit is too. it's not crystallizing properly which may indicate it will fail sooner
I’m thinking about sending one of my Teles in for a B bender install but I’m hesitant
>>127649145chinese culture is spending weeks designing a plastic spool in CAD that weighs more and holds less wire to rip people off instead of just making a half decent quality producthttps://youtu.be/lQ91gktACXw?si=o8wGN_nopLPShqFB&t=152
It's not crystal lettuce. The flux needs to remove oxides and the part must be hot enough to fuse to the solder. Buy whatever tone solder you want or just use a good iron with good material prep.

Went to see Whirr and Nothing a couple nights ago and got Doyle from Nothing's pick. Mf uses .46 Dunlap nylon picks. I got some from Sweetwater and tried them and they're just way too floppy and not enough attack or articulation. The .46 Dunlop 500's are goated though.
>>127649588Man Whirr is a name I haven’t heard in ages. I saw them in Seattle in 2012 or 2013 and that as a cool show. I’ve been out of the shoegaze/nugaze loop for 10+ years but that stuff used to be a real favorite of mine
>>127648909A tad dramatic but not untrue. If anything he’s a savant when it comes to song writing and melody crafting. He might be socially retarded but he makes up for it tenfold musically. Plus he’s a Jag enjoyer
>>127649687Yeah that's about the time I got into them and shoegaze in general too. Was a great show though even though the scene has definitely changed and the zoomerfication of the genre.

>>127648966I bought some random solder the online store had. My problem was not tinning the tip properly I think. I remember holding the hot soldering iron for like 30 seconds on a huge blob on the pot and it just wouldn't come off. It was only by a miracle that I was able to pry the old pickup's wires off that. I have no idea why the blob isn't melting. When I touched the solder with the tip, it was melting. Is it possible that the glob wasn't even solder?
https://youtu.be/jvjDr8KKtsE
>>127649954Scammers will just mix it with other random cheap shit and try and pass it off as solder, like drug dealers cutting coke.
What's it called when you only play half a chord.Like the first 3 strings of a Gm chord
>>127650058it's called a chord
Why would you buy soda from a drug dealer
>>127650071He means when they cut the can of Coke and then smelt it into solder. Then you use it to install the vintage PAF Humbuckers into your 57 LP with sunburst finish, but all it does is melt, ruining your resell value on Reverb because you can't pass it off as relic'd.

Just got back from guitar center, why is every guitar in the store scuffed to hell and covered in eyelashes and pubic hair?? I get that they’re floor models, but smaller music stores don’t have this problem. I played some American Fenders and they all felt like MIMs, every single one aside from the Ultra. The AVR Jazzmaster is as abysmal as I remembered it being, honestly feels no different than the Tahitian Coral CV JM I played. The only guitars in the building within a cunt hair of being set up are the used instruments which are twice as dusty and pube laden. Remind me to stop going back there
>>127650327Sounds like the GC you go to is garb. Not all of them are built equal unfortunately.

Too many pretty Strats out there to settle for one with mid colors. But she sounded great.
>>127650327workers are fired if they don't have good enough sales so they aren't incentivized to take care of the stores or communicate with the customers unless it leads to a big sale. the other problem is constantly revolving inventory and lack of storage space. you can't just have a floor model because companies change their shit every year or two but you also have to keep the box and/or case to the floor models in store so you're still out the physical space it requires. guitar center is expected to carry everything like a walmart. private stores can be better as they tend to just carry a handful of brands but they typically go for ones they know they'll sell which usually means they're decent instruments. all their income is tied up in stock and have less staff so they benefit from selling already set up guitars
Is GC a chain store or is it franchised like Mc.Donald
>>127650327>want to get that dirt cheap piece of shit jackson $200 unpainted unfinished shitplank V to screw around and mess with electronics on, maybe gift or loan it to a friend who wants to start playing>go play it in the store>doesn't feel awful to play, sounds fine for the value>fuck it, buy one>they give me one from the back that's still in the box>nut is fucked and two strings are completely dead>go through the hassle of buying and refitting the nut, as well as all the tools and suchvaluable learning experience but knowing now I would've just taken the disgusting pube covered floor model that played fine, and sanitized it
>>127650578they have regional and district managers and it's owned by a management group and the buildings are owned by corporate
>>127650544Nah that’s pewdiepie (who owns a Gibson)
You can't mess with a king.
>>127650578It's a chain and it's the only brick and mortar American guitar store that can survive build blacks better or trump's big beautiful bull (stagflation). The company started with a huge expansion model, adding stores to every major US city while undercutting other music retailers. They had a huge initial advertising push. Then when expansion was impossible, they signed a Faustian bargain with Bane capital who essentially collects usury on the entire company until it withers and dies.
>>127650454Actually my friend just got a mandolin, it was under $500 and sounds really nice and resonant. Coincidentally he used to wear diapers into guitar center, not for any fetishitic reason but because he actually did suffer from severe bowel issues. I’m not even kidding.
Why do classicals sound do good? How do I get that sound out of a Tele (I'm told Tele's can do all guitar tones)?
>>127650806that's just punk rawk
>>127650829shew...
>>127650593I know this feel. As much as I diss the floor model, underneath the pubes and dust lays a guitar that has been put through its paces. One of my favorite guitars was a floor model at a tiny music shop, a player 1 HSS that didn’t have a single scratch and was set up flawlessly, no doubt by some bored employee who babied it.
