the order doesn't matter, i'm just trying to optimize cpu usage. i guess it would be better to figure out which bus to prioritize that requires the most processing or handles the largest amount of routing.

Just remember that being a master of sound won't make you a master of music. Music skills like playing an instrument, singing or composing are completely different path from sound engineering. Buying some cheap keyboard, downloading Musescore (free) and learning how to create a five minute composition for string quartet will give you far greater insight into music.

I ignored this shit for ages because I downloaded creamcoat when I was completely fresh to producing and thought it was shit. Didn't want to get anything else because of how annoying and un-user friendly it all was. Got consolidated a day or so ago and tried a few things out on something I was working on and got instant results. Feels like I could load certain stuff onto almost any sound to bring out something good in them. Mindblowing that this guy just does it for free. I can finally forgive him for his schizo videos and just appreciate the results.
>>
Quick question, when mastering on headphones is it a good idea to attempt to EQ my headphones beforehand to a target like Harman, or will I lose something?
>>
>>127753874
if they are literally the worst headphones ever and you're going to replace them in the future, it might be something to consider, but if they are somewhat decent you should probably just learn your headphones bro lol

Over the years I had a Tascam then 2 Fostex amd finally a Yamaha 4-track cassette. All broke eventually. Usually it was one track stopped working or the power supply broke repeatedly. I think Fostex had the clearest sound and the simplest controls. I only mess with Reaper more recently.

I think your unit is defective, the mic is bad, or mic position is too far if gain is a problem, I've never had that issue in Focusrites I've used. That might be worth buying an external preamp for or upgrading your interface.
There's a lot of "haha guitarists are so stupid" but these kinds of clipping boosts/preamps are really useful for synth and drum machines that people would normally overload into mixers or other outboard gear.

>>127748085
>i was excited until i saw 250 usd like that's not just as fucking bad as the originals getting jacked up prices what the fuck
I'd consider it if it had XLR in, but that's the state of pedals now. We don't live in the $99 a pedal world anymore. It's probably $70-80+ worth of parts (or more now with tariffs), so pedals tend to be priced at 3-4x their cost and retailers get a cut. Wait til you can find one on sale during holidays or used, it does react to how you play and pres/distortion are about the only things worth buying that you still can't exactly recreate in the box.

Used Portra market has been crazy for years, but there are other pedals that clone the circuit. For using a Portra as a preamp, this is cheaper, more reliable, and more portable than gambling on buying some used unit that you don't even know works. If you're really upset about the price, try to build a clone or buy from someone and you won't be saving a ton of money or time for similar specs.

I have the Colour Box which I use for guitar, bass, voice, DI, and reamping. It's great for dialing in tones baked with gain/EQ that don't need much if any post-processing in the daw. I wish I would have bought any kind of preamp with EQ sooner

It's getting there. Good bones but just not quite hitting, something about is a little thin/flat... or it's missing something. I also think you could draw the intro out for one, your sound there is very airy so putting more space in there compositionally could go well I think. Continue that vocal hook thing too, I can picture this sounding really good with a little more work!

you get more control in 7- overly cumbersome for most people but it lets you fuck up the sound in ways that aren’t intended and usually sound awful.

I watched the whole thing.
In the clip they mention using Melodyne to compress, and I thought it was just the note rebalance thing that lowers/increases the volume of the different slices/notes, but it turns out there's this whole sound editor section:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdL3yjzubuQ
Would need to try it to say for sure, but from what I'm seeing it's absolutely insane for both mixing and sound design. Possible new META even.

The rest is also pretty interesting. They talk about their workflow, the creative choices, etc.
A couple things that stood out to me:
They use Nicky Romero's Kickstart for a lot of their sidechaining, and they said they've used Metasynth a lot since their first album.
Cross was mixed entirely in the box, and that their mastering chain in Cubase was a long chain of compressors and distortion (Quadrafuzz, using its multiband saturation to essentially EQ the master) to the point of basically not needing any mixing and also not being able to control anything lol

And last but not least, Kevin Parker said this:
https://i.4cdn.org/wsg/1758018133615899.webm
Look at his fucking face.
I KNOW that he said it specifically to fuck with us and you won't be able to change my mind.
