What’s the deal with cover bands? They’re not the band… but they’re also not not the band. It’s like musical cosplayyou’re dressed as Aerosmith, but your name is Aero-ish.And people go crazy!“Play Free Bird!”You realize these guys aren’t allowed to play Free Bird… right? They’re basically musical babysitters. They tuck you in with the classics while the real band’s out making new songs you don’t want to hear. And the names oh, the names!“Almost Zeppelin,” “Not Quite Nirvana.”At least be honest!Call yourselves “The Discounts.”
It was 1 a.m. in the Burger King parking lot, neon sign buzzing like a dying firefly. Mountain had dragged out a little amp from the back of his rig, uke slung low on his shoulder. His eyes were red, face wet man was crying heavy, not a sniffle, but full-bodied sobs that shook his chest.Gary Greaser was there too, perched on the hood of his old Chevy, leather jacket shining under the flickering light. He had a cigarette dangling, hands cupped around the flame like it was holy.“Mountain, pal… you sure you’re good to play?” Gary asked, voice somewhere between concern and disbelief.Mountain didn’t answer with words. He just strummed a shaky, off-kilter rendition of “Wonderwall.” The uke buzzed, strings jangling like rusted windchimes. Every chord cracked in half from the tears dripping onto the fretboard.Gary lit another smoke, shaking his head. “You’re killin’ me, kiddo. Cryin’ over a uke in a Burger King lot… this is the saddest set I ever seen.”But Mountain just kept going, voice breaking, half-singing half-sobbing:“And after alllll, you’re my wonderwaaaall…” A group of kids in lowered Civics rolled by, slowed down just long enough to honk and yell “Play Freebird!” Mountain lifted his uke like a weapon and shouted through his tears, “FREEBIRD’S FOR CLOWNS, BUCKO!” before collapsing back into his ballad.Gary clapped, slow and sarcastic. “Encore, champ. You’re a regular Elvis in a puddle of saltwater.”By the end, the Whopper wrappers scattered at his feet looked like little gravestones. The parking lot was empty except for Mountain, Gary, and the buzzing neon crown above them.It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t tight. But it was a set.And at 1 a.m. outside Burger King, it was legendary.

I don't remember how to play any of them anymore. That made me wonder how actual artists remember their stuff, but I guess they play it almost daily, so it's harder to forget.I also keep tabs of everything I write inside my project files for that reason. There are some sketches and ideas in there where I didn't include tabs and now I don't remember how to play it anymore. >>127766557Instead of a 1 piece neck you get a maple neck + maple board
>>127766594...isn't that just a standard 2 pieces neck? I find it hard to believe only custom shop fenders had them
>>127766540It looks like wood dude. Why was shit the first thing you imagined.
>>127766557>>127766594I think the story is that after the transition to Rosewood after the 50s, Fender stopped making maple one piece necks for awhile. Then they reintroduced maple for those who wanted it. Except they used the maple neck blanks meant for rosewood fretboards and put a maple cap on maple neck for awhile. It's kind of funny, but they're prized for being strange. Probably some even thought there was some mojo to it since Jimi played a lot of these late 60s maple cap Strats...so Fender is now compelled to issue stuff like that now rather than forgetting them in the dustbin of history.
>>127766614nta but it's an objectively ugly wood for fretboards
>>127766630I've seen good ones. The people cranking them out just don't care to cut it for that. I think a lot of Suhr guitars are pretty uniform PF. Fender can do it too, but they don't bother on their cheaper models. Like the SRV Strat has always been Pau Ferro and very few of them look wacky. Picrel is Pau Ferro, but you wouldn't know it at first glance.
>>127766630Not at all, it's a beautiful and in-demand wood.
>>127766680It's hardly as bad as some of the shit they throw on bespoke metaltard crap but it still looks overwrought and out of place.

>>127766629This, it’s just a thing Fender did after they swapped to rosewood boards. Everything went to rosewood in 1959, prior to 1959 their necks were one piece maple with a rosewood skunk stripe on the back to cover the rout for the truss rod. After they went to rosewood the they routed the neck for the truss rod under the fretboard and covered it with the actual rosewood board. In the early 1960s people wanted maple boards again but the old tooling was gone so they made the necks the same way they made their rosewood board necks but instead used a maple fretboard instead of rosewood, hence maple cap instead of a rosewood cap or a one piece maple neck. Maple cap necks are snappier and brighter than older one piece maple necks and are popular with country Telecaster players. Fender went back to one piece maple necks in 1969 but those guitars from ‘59 to ‘69 with maple caps remained popular with certain Tele players, and haven’t been a regular production thing for decades until these ($1600 (one thousand six hundred dollars) (yikes) MIM (Made in Mexico) (yikes)) guitars outside of small batches or limited runs
>>127766851I didn't know they were snappier. My Strat has a rosewood "laminated" board of the mid-60s, rather than the Rosewood thicker slab of the early 60s. So there were strange stages of Rosewood too. No skunk stripe. I'm not sure if it's suppose to sound different but I like it.
>>127766235I'll give that a try. Are practicing scales just to know the notes on your fret board and have the muscle memory of jumping to different intervals?
>>127766884I don’t really think it makes that much of a difference sound wise, maple Teles are still plenty snappy regardless of neck construction. Some guys really seek out maple cap Teles though, that’s all Brad Paisley has ever used are late 60s maple cap Teles. I just thought it was cool that Fender brought these out for this Vintera series until I saw the price
