How are you gonna stop him from asking guitar questions in the guitar general? You gonna downvote him?
>>
Question: if it's not a tube amplifier can it really be called a 'combo'?
The word combo refers to the tube amplifier and the speaker in the same cabinet. Solidstate and digital is just a bunch of electronic shit stuffed into the box with the speaker. Thus, not a combo.
Not a question btw, but a statement.
>>
just dont go through more than like 30ft of cable total
its that simple
ideally dont go through like 40 pedals either. thats actually usually the bigger issue ime
>>
>>127855395
its still a combo of the speaker and the head
its just a solidstate head

>>
>>127855395
if it's got a pre amp + power amp and speaker cab in one, it's a combo amp midwit. solid state heads exist.

Coiled cables have a lot of signal loss after 15-18 feet. It worked somewhat in Jimi's favor and tamed a bright Strat. It isn't a good idea everywhere.
>>
>>127858948
Also, the fact that they're coiled means you won't be happy with one that short. It has to be 18 feet stretched out and uncoiled. But a coiled 18 foot will be more 25-30.

I don't feel cool when I play guitar. For free dophamine I can play videogames or watch a movie.
The idea of playing guitar seemed so boring when I was a kid and it looks like it hasn't changed.
My music taste has evolved, I like guitar music, but playing it by myself alone, with some backing track, feels retarded and dumb.

Why do you play guitar, anon? Why would anyone play guitar?

>>127860364

No but seriously. I was severely depressed one time and stopped playing the guitar for months and months. I only picked up the guitar again when I got out of it, I think actually you play the guitar not to make you feel better but because you're okay and it's an outlet for that goodness inside. It's an idea that's backed up by many instances (records) going to shit when the artists themselves went to shit. I don't subscribe to the "troubled artist" theory.

real question.

What's the logic behind the different pickups configurations out there? My guitar has three pickups, two single coils and one hambucker. Why? Why not three single coils or why not three hambuckers? My other guitar has only two pickups and its hambuckers. What changes? I never realized how guitars have different pickups configurations. I knows it's a silly thing, but why is that? I know pickups are very important when the matter is electric guitars and I also know that changing the pickup position changes the tone. I don't understand the logic behind then when the subject is art. I know that in heavy metal they like to use hambuckers because they use a lot of gain, but in other styles you will have so much options to chose. I have 5 pickup positions to select and I don't know what each position is used for. Can someone explain to me what situations players use those five positions for? I like the neck position. I like that position, but there are other four that I'm not using so much. I must understand what those other positions are for if I want to be a good guitar players or even a decent guitar player.
>>
watch a youtube video or something man nobody got time for shite
>>
>>127862986
Three reason HSS Strats exist is because tons of players modded humburgers into their strats for ~30 years before Fender made it official. Typically the bridge pickup is used for your overdriven tones but there's some great neck tones too. The middle pickup is a bit of a meme and so are the in betweens, you don’t need them but they can be nice to have.

I'm convinced now that the middle pickup almost purely exists for positions 2 & 4 quacky tones.
next to no one uses it alone for a "not quite bridge, not quite neck" tone
>>
>>127863131
Definitely, position 2 is a lifesaver when you need a solid hum canceling tone.

I used Amplitube for a bit and actually considered buying it. Thank god I found NAM first. Don't get an amp pedal, that would be like buying a special pissing extension for your toilet. Just download NAM, go to Tone3000, search the amp you want to sound like and try out different ones. All free, incredibly easy, and some of the models are truly amazing. I found the exact amp I have (1973 Super Reverb) recorded through the mic I record it with (SM57) and it would be virtually indistinguishable if it weren't for mic placement and EQ knob differences. That being said, if you have an amp and a closet, just buy an SM57 and record your amp. Recording guitars is extremely straightforward. It's not like vocals where there's this huge range of sound quality depending on a hundred different variables.
>>
>>127862986
It's just different sounds man. If you want to be a good or decent guitar player, try playing better. Then, when you're recording or playing with a band, you can literally just flip a switch and see how you like different positions. That's it. You'll likely draw the exact same conclusions as everyone else, including the designers. Every different configuration offers a different set of options, of which one can choose for any and all reasons relevant to their own tastes and goals.
>>
>>127863276
the question is:
did leo do this intentionally, or was it a happy accident?
>>
>>127861615

>>
>>127863577

>>
>>127863501
I did download NAM ages ago but never really played around with it much. I mostly used cracked amped vsts but don't wanna use those for recording.

I'll be looking more into NAM though, back then it was really confusing my simpleton ass. I generally suck at dialing a good tone, EQ stuff is completely above my head so I really need to learn that stuff.

I do have an amp but it's a laney practice amp and I doubt that one would be worth recording. Also got an old vox tube which needs to be fixed but once it is, I imagine using that would be much better.
>>
>>127863676
>forgot my tonesticks at home what do
>>
>>127863684
Dialing tones is more about understanding your sound. It's about how you want to be heard. Competition with other instruments. How the eq effects your signal chain. Go crazy with the eq then roll it back to what makes sense.

I have some ideas about what kind of sounds I'd wanna go for but after years of playing with most basic tones that barely sound decent I really have no clue how to dial in anything good lol. I'm really used to bad, all my guitars were never properly set-up or intonated for example and I just got used to it. Same with tone, I just used what sounded the least bad.

If you just change the strings and tune them, they will go out of tune because the tension will cause them to stretch. This will happen multiple times.

What you can do is change the strings, tune them roughly, pull on the strings, tune them roughly, pull on the strings etc. until they start staying in tune.
>>
>>127863900
Obviously all at once as you can't clean your guitar properly with strings on.

The only epiphones that are worth buying are the inspired by Gibson. Otherwise you get shit electronics. Anything sub 1000 new is going to be shit. My advice is to pick up a used Mexican fender, prs se or Ltd ec-1000 if that’s your price range. I get the squier classic vibe stuff isn’t great. Just buy something used cheaper that is built well and swap the pickups if you need to.
>>127866240
It’s not going to sound good. At the very least pick up a classic vibe fender jazz bass. Ibanez has the worst pickups.
>>
>>127866267

>>
>>127866267
I meant to say even the classic vibe stuff isn’t great. They just don’t feel as good as a Mexican or American fender. The classic vibe jazz bass I had was actually ok though for the price I paid (300 used.) it was a little heavy, but it still felt and played and sounded like an actual fender.
>>127866286
There’s a lot wrong with them, they don’t have any personality or character. I guess it’s okay if you’re only playing metal. Even the higher end Ibanez and Yamaha basses sound meh.

They do not sound good to me and I’ve heard them in dozens of different venues. I really don’t know how I can explain what generic and bland means. Like there’s nothing about them that says “oh that’s an Ibanez” or “man I wish I could get that toan.” I don’t know if it’s because they’re too flat eq’d or it’s the wiring but it’s the same thing with their guitars. I’ve never been wowed by the sound of an Ibanez (except the older Gibson copies were pretty good)

Anyways apparently the Ibanez internet defense force is doing damage control again today. I’m not opposed to other types of basses. I think fender, Gibson, Warwick, music man, rickenbacker, g&l, schecter sound great. I’m sure there’s other great sounding basses out there. For me, Ibanez and Yamaha don’t sound as good. And you’re not going to shill me into thinking they do just because they’re well built and budget friendly. I already said they’re well built and a good value, but I don’t think they sound good. I’m sorry that hurts your fee fees.

>>127866612

>>
>>127866902
I’ve had them, not a fan of binding, it increases friction. Blocks would look weird without binding. I’m not into offsets for the looks, it’s 90% about how they feel, play and sound. Mustangs for the feel/Playability, Jags and JMs for the sounds that you will not get on any other fender models.
>>
>>127866800
You’re right I was trying to be polite. I played in a band that used 7 strings and had to play a gio since I only owned a 6 string and I fucking hated that guitar. I also at the time traded my bc rich v for an Ibanez rg550 because I thought the bc rich looked too wild, and that was a huge mistake. That guitar also sucked. I do like other Japanese brands like Yamaha and esp though. I just don’t like Yamaha basses, but apparently they have a new p bass clone that might be interesting. But yeah I’ve pretty much played everything out there guitar and bass wise and owned everything and I have some strong opinions people may not like.
>>
>>127866975
yeah i can see that. i do also like yamaha and i thought the bb3000 bass was very cool. i'm not trying to be mean or deride anyone for playing cheaper instruments but don't lie about their quality. some poor soul is going to see some bullshit on the internet and buy a shitplank that may not even play with a professional setup and quit learning guitar

Rediculous.
>>
What's the best pick for pinch-choked notes?
>>
How do I get the 50s R&B tone?
>>
>>127867011
Well I don’t think I was lying about their quality as I’m not someone who plays sub 1000 dollar instruments. So for me it was more like they feel ok for being a shitplank. I was holding back my feelings about Ibanez just because there’s so many Ibanez internet defense force dudes that will argue with you, but I really haven’t played one I’ve liked and I’ve played a few Jem’s. My first guitar teacher had a hot pink jem, and a guy I worked with had a metallic white jem. At the time I was playing a carvin and I wouldn’t have traded for either of them. Also never really liked vai. But either way I’ve played a lot of Ibanez guitars both in bands and at guitar stores and not once did any of them strike me as anything I’d want to own. To me they don’t sound good or feel good or look good and I have no interest in them. I’ll play the shit out of a revstar though and have actually owned two of them, I love those guitars.
>>127867088

>>
>>127867088
Btw the only reason I say .60mm or thicker is easier is because thin picks bend more and leave less room for your thumb to come behind them and hit the artificial harmonic. I can still get pinch harmonics out of .50mm or thinner picks but sometimes they just drag on the string and by the time your thumb comes through they’re still making contact with the string which mutes the harmonic. There needs to be a gap in between your pick ringing the string and your thumb striking behind it for artificial harmonics to ring.
