Genres that aren't pure metal and thus not trve:

Heavy Metal (too much hard rock influence)
Glam Metal (too much pop/rock influence)
Speed Metal (heavy metal played fast thus hard rock mixed with metal)
Thrash metal (too much hardcore influence)
Crossover Thrash (mixes thrash with hardcore)
US Power Metal (sound mostly comes from heavy/speed/thrash thus has hard rock and hardcore influence)
EU Power Metal (takes a lot of song structure and techniques, influence from rock and introduces foreign instruments)
Folk Metal (mixes metal with folk)
Symphonic metal (mixes metal with symphonic music and opera)
Gothic Metal (introduces keyboards)
Neoclassical Metal (mixes metal with neoclassical + neoclassical song structure)
Drone Metal (mixes metal with drone)
Industrial metal (mixes metal with electroindustrial)
Nu-metal (mixes alternative rock/grunge with rap metal)
Metalcore (mixes metal with hardcore)
Mathcore (mixes metalcore with math rock)
Deathcore (mixes death metal with metalcore)
Kawaii Metal (mixes metal with jpop and jrock)
Progressive Metal (fusion between metal and progressive rock)
Alternative Metal (mixes metal with alternative rock and sometimes introduces foreign genres like pop)
Post Metal (introduces foreign instruments)
Sludge Metal (mixes doom metal with hardcore)
Atmoshperic Sludge (post-metal sludge)
Blackgaze (too much shoegaze influence)
Grindcore (mixes death metal with hardcore)
Deathgrind/Goregrind (mixes death metal with grindcore)
Any Noise Metal (noisegrind, gorenoise)
1st wave Black Metal (blackened speed i.e venom and blackened thrash i.e celtic frost/bathory, thus influenced by nwobhm/hardcore)
Viking Metal (mixes 1st wave black metal and folk)
War Metal (subgenre of 1st wave bm thus has thrash influence, also has grindcore influence)
Atmospheric Black metal that features synths
Depressive Black Metal that features rock (Apati, Lifelover etc)
Black 'n' Roll (mixes black metal and rock)
Symphonic Black Metal (introduces keyboards)

1/2
>>
>>127862407
OSDM that takes too much Thrash Influence
Symphonic Death Metal (introduces keyboards)
Avant-Garde Death Metal and Avant Garde Black Metal (experimental, sometimes introduced foreign instruments and jazz fusions.)
Progressive Death Metal (mixes death metal and progressive metal)
Any Slam that features Hip-Hop samples
Melodic Death Metal (too much melodic metalcore influence)
Death 'n' Roll (mixes death metal and rock)

The only trve metal genres/subgenres:
>Doom Metal (doesnt introduce anything new, all the blues influence was already present in sabbath which doom takes from, unlike sludge which takes new influence from hardcore):
Traditional Doom
Epic Doom
Death-Doom
Funeral Doom
Stoner Doom
>Death Metal (any death metal that doesnt take influence from grindcore really):
Brutal Death
Slam Death (that does not feature hip-hop samples)
Technical Death (that isn't progressive)
Cavernous Death
Blackened Death
>Black Metal (anything that isn't post-black/experimental/blackgaze/rock fusion):
Raw Black
Atmospheric Black (that doesn't feature synths)
Depressive Black (that doesn't take rock or blackgaze influence)
Melodic Black (unlike melodeath, theres no core influence here, and as long as it features guitar with no keyboards i.e storm of the light's bane it remains pure)

tell me if i missed something.

>>
>>127862523
"original metal" is a misnomer, as original heavy metal is already too mixed in with hard rock, it took a much longer time to isolate the metal parts and remove the rock parts
black sabbath itself made music that sometimes bordered on hard rock (never say die), while some others were doom or heavy metal.
thus in fact heavy metal and "original metal" are not real metal.

Slayer is the blueprint. Don't trust people that don't like them.
>>
When I listen early Morbid Angel up until Altars, it seems to me it was musically like early Slayer, but more chaotic, faster and extreme to the point it ended up being thrash metal and entered death metal territory
>>
Listen Morbid Angel "Abominations of Desolation" debut produced by Dave Vincent, it's the early Slayer blueprint but musically taken to more extreme form entering the proto-DM territory
>>
>>127863184
Deboonked.
>>
>>127863470
From "Abominations of Desolation" reviews:
>Right in the midst of this is Morbid Angel, whose occult tinged approach to the genre put them in a unique camp that tended to reach back towards the earlier proto-extreme of Venom, but with the virtuosic majesty of Slayer on speed, and a complex approach to song structuring that also looked forward to later technicians in both the death metal style and the Bay Area thrash explosion.

Like most drugs, it makes life a lot better when you're on it, and a lot shittier after it wears off. The temporary bliss isn't worth the rebound effect imo.

It's also easy to overdo it and become a paranoid mess. Thankfully I've never experienced that side of it, personally.

Just learned that the cover art of Necromantia - Crossing the Fiery Path is a blatant ripoff of this DnD art. The artist even mentions it here:
https://distortednoizezine.wordpress.com/2025/02/15/panos-sounas/

>I had already heard about them and their work, so I was proud when they suggest me to paint their new artwork. Of course I must mention, that the original painting idea is not mine, but is a variation (after the bands’ guidance) of an oldest american artwork, with vampire, for a RPG game.

I don't dislike slam as much as standard death metal. Slam is more predictable and straightforward. It's easy to know what to expect from it. Standard death metal is a chaotic atonal noisy mess all over the place. Even when it tries a melody it comes out ugly. Slam just has one card that it plays over and over again. Malevolent Creation and Morbid Angel disturb me more than any slam.

Or for example this, I always though this riff sounded like absolute dogshit, why would anyone listen to this instead of real music. Sometimes you've got to admit it's a question of quality and not artistic license, you can't hide behind "extremity" for making shitty music.

This is good. Nothing new or original but they've been playing together for like 25 years so they know what they're doing

With each iteration of changing computers and externals failing I gave up and now only listen to YouTube links. Besides I spend most of my day at work on a work computer so it's not like I can put my collection there. You can find almost anything on YouTube these days anyway.

Holy shit that takes me back. My older cousin had a bunch of them on floppies when I was a kid. He also had incredible armies of Warhammer fantasy orks and elves with landscapes that that his train-set building dad who had the entire basement set up as a train room. It was unreal. My cousin let me borrow his forgotten realms booms and also listened to metal. I remember he owned an Armoured Angel tape. Memoreies man. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
