https://youtu.be/hDDTmpw3fYg?&t=96This sounds like shit, do people actually think this is better than Reign in Blood? The guitar sare so thin and weak, you can barely make anything out. Just some fuzzy noise in the background. Maybe they're doing some interesting riffing but you can barely hear it.

However, I think I'll go back to the '85 chart and add Hell Awaits
NVM there's no room and I don't want to remove anything, when we do a thrash chart it'll be on that
>>127898500Havoc one was from 1985 (US release), still a superb album.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzlgrpN7Lfs
>>127898622Ah, I see. I'll take it off the list but I will put it in my backlog since it's a USPM record I haven't heard of before
>>127897779My pick. It is the most underrated metal album of all time. The arrangements remain completely unique to this day. The thing is, it's not an easy listen and it takes very long to click for most people. But when it clicks it will never let you go. The metal musicians I know who like this album all worship it as an unparalleld masterpiece that functions as an endless source of inspiration and fascination. It's such a strange and sophisticiated and enigmatic record that despite its influence and quality and being a release by a platinum selling band, it has never even reached cult status in the greater metal sphere, instead remaining a gem for the few people curious enough to give it a couple of spins.
>>127898649I was expecting this release to turn up sooner or later. There's one song off of it that I don't care for but the rest of the record is in my eyes perfect.
>>127898649Love this one, though not so much their look at the time. They adopted a very strange glam metal/goth hybrid image just for this one album then ditched it straight after the tour.
>>127900538Was it a record label decision? Because there's only like, one remotely glam song on Rage for Order.

>>127897779about 1985, was last command weaker than other wasp albums?
>>127909863Yeah, it didn't get enough votes.>was last command weaker than other wasp albums? It has some great stuff but I wouldn't call it essential, so it didn't make the cut.
Anyone know what type of keyboard is used in the synth/keyboard solo in early virgin steele songs? I like how it sounds. Some parts sound like he's using a pitch wheel or modulation wheel on the keyboard. Not sue if its monophonic.Example of one song where its used, about 80 seconds in:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xebBcT_VQoM&t=80shttps://virginsteele.bandcamp.com/track/the-lesson-demo-anniversary-remixYou can also hear it in Children of the Storm, The Redeemer, and Guardians of the Flame.
Oh yeah Rage for Order's on the chart now since it got 3 votes. Also I'm a retard and forgot that Born Too Late was one of my favorite albums of '86 (always misremember it as '87 lol) so I put that up there. Helstar stays since I'm pretty damn confident people would've voted for that one regardless.
Judas Priest's Turbo had some great songs:https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=dp-KXWfisHAhttps://music.youtube.com/watch?v=R6QaXKiCz4INot sure how I feel about the other songs, i haven't listened to them in a while. Incidentally, it's from 1986.
>>127910093Yeah those are the two main hits of that record. I think it's pretty over hated and has some good stuff, but there's also some real shit on that album like Parental Guidance, too.
Checking out another Korean album atm. The rest of this record so far sounds pretty par for the course for '89 (maybe a bit outdated?), but then this song just sounds like it was ripped straight from the mid '70s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEnq8KeDjqQ
While listening to this, I got the impression that this band can't decide whether they want to be hard-hitting speedy melodic trad or inoffensive '80s rock. There is some great stuff here (notably the fourth track which is a blistering piece of power metal reminiscent of Pretty Maids but with cleaner vocals), but most of it trends towards the middle of the quality spectrum. I honestly can't say I'm impressed with the Korean metal I've heard so far. With little exception, it either sounds 4-5 years removed of when it came out or is just copying what Japan was doing at the time; only there's less talent behind it because Korea has jack for a metal scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYpsnRNLxSshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkvU0KRBDeMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1YSyqsY8mo

>>127910093Relentless and Locked In are bangers too. The latter has supremely cheesy lyrics (that "when you shake the things you shake" line fucking haunts me, kek) but is otherwise my favorite track on that record.
>>127912000wtf I meant Reckless lol
Well that didn't take as long as expected. Three albums in and I get a Korean album that's good. Great, even! The music here is similar to late '80s Helloween but with a clear neoclassical slant, and the songwriting (especially on the title track, my god that song's masterclass) is on fucking point. Highly recommended!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQVTEQa2gSYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_W6HTWwZLEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgn_UX4C5JQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUjH5_LQG9k
Fucking immaculate, while it slows down a bit with the final songs; that still doesn't negate the fact that this is a massive improvement over Bound to Break, and one of the best albums I've heard from '88https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2MoBjPPyKwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHTkA_ultnshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC94O1VPnkkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvbQvL3lAbchttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycVUyXv2n34

It's just decent, it'd be a lot better if this band had a better singer and the production had more oomph. It's quite tinny and at its worst sounds kind of unpleasant. The record peaks with the first song, but even then that one isn't anything to write home about. A rare miss for Japanese trad.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-RSEhsYaCI
>>127921788I suggest you make a list of the obscure asian metal bands you are checking out.
>>127921992Sure, why not? I'm already planning on making a chart for JAP '80s trad when I feel like I've listened to enough to make one. :P
Pretty good thrash, plenty of variety in arrangements though only once (with the second track) does the band truly excel. One of the better obscure thrash records, just don't expect to have your jaw drop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyeILvKICLghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jasup8wcVTAhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gu1Kg75ZKM
>>127922007how many japanese vs chinese vs korean metal bands from that era are there?
>>127922773>how many japanese vs chinese vs korean metal bands from that era are there? Can't give an exact number since I'm still going through them all myself, but I can already tell you right now China+Korea combined would only put a small dent on the amount Japan has
>>127922799I wonder why more of them came from japan? Is it westaboos or something?
>>127923188Japan historically had a much larger audience for rock and metal than other Asian countries, there’s a bunch of other factors too like them being very well off during the 70s-80s but that’s the main oneAs such, bands toured in Japan a LOT. Zeppelin, Purple, Priest, Scorpions, they all played shows in Japan and the latter two bands really helped to foster the heavy metal sound there
>>127923310is that why so many albums have japan only bonus tracks?
>>127924348I'd assume so, yesMetal isn't the most popular genre in Japan but it has a very long history there and a devoted following
>>127924348>>127924361I'm pretty sure it was a kind of requirement from the Japanese record companies so people wouldn't buy imports.Don't know how relevant it is today, but most hard rock/metal bands still do it. Probably because there's a market of people who still buy physical media.
>>127924408>I'm pretty sure it was a kind of requirement from the Japanese record companies so people wouldn't buy imports. With how often I'll see JAP prints of an album while looking around (even IRL), I wouldn't doubt it. And I wouldn't be surprised if there were some Americans that imported records because of the extra tracks, either.

>>127932464Slayer stinks. They have one album that is okay, Seasons in the Abyss. Otherwise it's just atonal mangle.
>>127935014>They have one album that is okay, Seasons in the Abyss.>Seasons in the AbyssThat's easily the weakest record of their classic output and the only reason it's as lauded as it is, is because of the perfect title track
It came and went. There's brief bouts of inspired songwriting (you'd think there'd be more considering 5 of the 8 songs are longer than 5 minutes) but the majority of the record is very routine. Only thing notable about this release is that it switches between two vocalists (Spooky, Shorty), kind of like MK III Deep Purple did with Coverdale and Hughes.

>>127947054To you as well! I haven't really made time to listen to anything today but I think I'm ready to check out an album or two
A solid hard 'n' heavy album with the highlights being the blazing Can You Roll Her (surely one of the most metallic songs released up to that point) and the masterfully crafted ballad Belladonna. No real complaints aside from the first two songs not being up to par with the rest of the record.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMLyscy2Jb0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Atxwt_5VXO4https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4QlveusUdMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSeiZwJbq30
The epitome of "yeah, it's alright". Does nothing great, but does nothing horrendously bad, either. Reminds me of a discount early '80s Y&T.

New MSG album just dropped earlier today, and while I'm not familiar with his latter-day output, what I heard here was some pretty good melodic hard rock/heavy metal. It’s better than Ample Destruction and I’m tired of pretending it’s not.
Probably the best MSG album I've heard, I can really see this one growing on me if I listen to it more. Consistently great hard 'n' heavy and Schenker's at the top of his game.
