>>127923587i grew up in that era by around 2008-2010 i was disinterested in metal and by 2010-2012 i deleted most of my metal albums to make space for other shit on my drives (but i still have my physical media thankfully.)90s black metal bands really struggled adapting to digital production, and that's really when the older trve cvlt authenticitymaxxed era of metal gave way for chasing commercial success. suddenly the internet could grow you a bigger overseas fanbase than a local cult following in your country and surrounding region. this alone was enough to make every 90s death metal act on earth go to shit chasing radio plays they never even got. black metal was affected by the same pressures but then on top of that most older bm acts really struggled with adapting to the digital production era early on (or forever kek) while death metal embraced it, and the old death metal acts still died, and yeah.even in 2010 it was extremely controversial that varg made an album on a laptop and there were all kinds of forum people and reviewers who ruthlessly shit on belus just for the sole reason it was digitally produced. its not my favorite release i didn't even like it at the time but yeah it says a lot that in 2010 something like that was still controversial when the entire rest of the music industry had already figured it out.
>>127923587every bm act that did anything interesting in the late 90s early 2000s got shit on for not being trve cvlt enough by the ponytail spergs who wrote reviews on the early internet.
>>127923798You just responded to a rat post
>>127923800Non-classical, non-avant-garde musicians tend to become washed up/irrelevant early on in their careers because they lack artistic and intellectual integrity. This is especially true of bands.Don't get me wrong. I love metal, but it's not (for lack of a better term) serious music. For the most part, it's rather formulaic, juvenile stuff that's almost never thought-provoking in terms of lyrical content.
>>127923925Hey Heck
>>127923976he's probably the noise/drone/etc guy
>>127923925i agree wholeheartedly. the best metal acts are the ones where you ask the guy who writes the songs what his inspirations are and nothing he lists off is another metal or rock band. metal is really juvenile, not that complex of songwriting (imo the concept of a 'riff' holds it back a lot) and formulaic but at its best metal and especially black metal can also be expressive, raw and emotional and convey such a wide variety of feels and emotions other genres can't even touch on. the average metal release is really shit, and making a mids metal album is pretty easy. at least by the standards of music that requires playing an instrument. but the ceiling for how hard a metal song can slap is potentially very high for the curated, seasoned listener who's taste develops beyond 'hard to play/write = good' mathrock-brained-sloppa. i think song lyrics all across the board in modern music are laughable, juvenile, musicians aren't the kinds of people i'm generally going to go to for profound thoughts when i have more than a lifetime of free/pirateable books thanks to the internet and my local public library. some bands out there in some genres have good lyrics occasionally but in general i just ignore that shit with music and i'm all about the feels. bm also has the same strength punk music has in the sense that its really easy for 1 or 2 guys to start a band and make music even if it isn't that good. punk drums are notoriously piss easy to play and that was done intentionally to make it easier to start a band to get a lyrical message out. bm was the same way but the problem is the message bm was centered around isn't really edgy anymore, except the nsbm stuff. point is, i wish more black metal bands took inspiration from stuff like i dunno, anything that isn't another metal/rock/guitar band.
>>127923840The "trve kvlt" stuff is annoying, but I get it. Your average metalhead’s identity revolves around the music they’re into, so when their favorite bands wander too far into left-field territory, it feels like an attack on the core of their personality. Of course, sometimes the music really is just garbage that deserves to be mocked and derided. What irritates me is when a truly innovative metal band comes around that has nothing to do with any "trve cvlt" niche, but the metal community ridicules them as if every metal band needs to confine themselves to their narrow views of what constitutes "pure" BM or DM or whatever.
Great real discussion
>>127924138>What irritates me is when a truly innovative metal band comes around that has nothing to do with any "trve cvlt" niche, but the metal community ridicules them as if every metal band needs to confine themselves to their narrow views of what constitutes "pure" BM or DM or whatever.that's exactly what cucked metal to the state it's in where the audience for non-core stuff struggled to grow outside of europe except for random ass third world countries in latin america and such that no one cares about. the guitar is considered a "legacy instrument" or "effect" in the music industry at large these days, even rock is dead. sucks because there are those acts that show glimpses of what could have been if it wasn't "gay" or "sell out" to take your music seriously or use vocals americans would actually listen to for 10+yrs.
Right, much better
I never effortpost because i'm kind of dumb, and it would only reveal my stupidity
>>127924138I thought people always meant "trve kvlt" ironically. I didn't think it was an actual criterion in black metal fandom.
>>127924273bro you have no idea how hard people used to shit on bands like i dunno early satyricon for using a synth.
>>127924115Honestly, I think the entire medium of music has been in its death throes for at least the past 20 years or so. I just don't think there are many more possibilities in terms of innovation. Electronic music still has some juice left in it, but not much. >>127924222>sucks because there are those acts that show glimpses of what could have been if it wasn't "gay" or "sell out" to take your music seriously or use vocals americans would actually listen to for 10+yrsAnything in particular come to mind?
>>127924273if a bm album sold above a certain threshold it was automatically trash back then and you had to pretend you didn't like it on metal forums. you'd see people go from praising to calling a release sell out in a one week period.
>>127924273Its more implicit than explicit.I mean, I don't think there are many metalheads going around using that specific term unironically, but they make it clear that they're not in favor of bands who distort their beloved subgenres too much. Instead of saying something isn't "trve cvlt", they'll say a band is "hipster" or something along those lines. Now, in all fairness, sometimes the criticism is accurate.
>>127924233Same except because who cares lol >>127924363
What’s the difference between Brutal Death Metal and Slam?
>>127924325every riff and drum loop that sounds good has already been written. there's only a finite amount of them that sound good with black metal/death metal. this is a problem basically every type of music people actually listen to not counting really disharmonic stuff, polymeter/rhythmic stuff, polyphonic instruments, pure noise movie soundtrack type stuff etc faces. this has shifted the meta towards music centering around the 'meta aspects to music, not the music itself. how you market it, how you look, the lyrics, "being mysterious" yada yada. other genres adapted to this. metal is starting to but its just way behind and has the disadvantage of requiring knowing how to play an instrument and usually get multiple people to get along and form a "band" to produce. its expensive to make compared to electronic/pop/etc music and has a smaller market so its not appealing from a commercial perspective, same problem most instrumental music has rn.the other thing too is "sales" are based on spotify views and its industry standard to bot and fake the shit out of those. i don't think the music that "sells" well these days has nearly as much of an audience as people think. atroturfing that stuff is cheap and easy, i know how to set up like farms and i know how much it costs to run them. in the early youtube days they did a fake views purge and a lot of mainstream music was dropping from multiple million view counts down to sub 100k. music's been dying since we stopped buying physical media. yeah downloading and streaming was great in the short term but it fucked over financial incentive for anything but the most commercially driven and profitable stuff to thrive beyond being some guy's passion project that prly loses money or pays like shit to tour. >examplesuh like 50% of the time when a band changes their sound and everyone shits on it, the first album is actually really good. i'm bad at pulling examples out of my ass sry.

>>127924465The thing is, the commodification of music isn't remotely new. I don't think that's what's holding it back at all, if that's what you're suggesting. If anything, the internet has pushed things forward by allowing artists from around the world and from every walk of life to instantly share ideas and expand their horizons. We're in a schizophrenic end-game right now where artists - at least the ones who actually care about music as a serious art from - are so desperate to come up with something new that they're tossing genres that are relatively incongruous into a blender. Unfortunately, what they usually end up producing is like a vomit-inducing smoothie. The only musicians doing anything I find particularly progressive and unique these days are the electronic artists who place a lot of emphasis on psychoacoustics.
>>127924608wow, that takes me back
>>127924629modern metal is too clean it needs to embrace imperfection, timbre, do more interesting shit with rhythm (meshuggah's popularity with zoomers has proven this) why don't more bands actually use more percussion than just drum sets, more bands should embrace some aspects of classical, modern electronic or both styles of songwriting without watering down. synths and such shouldn't be shit on so hard and don't need to be a lead instrument. atmosphere, guitar tones, uniqueness, soul, imperfection is what would appeal to the core metal audience and let's be honest its not a genre that's gonna grow, most immigrants aren't gonna get down with swedish death metal or whatever all the brown people who like it are the poor ones who stay in the 3rd world.

>>127924443brutal death is faster and was started by effigy of the forgotten suffocation while slam is slower and features breakdowns and was started by devourment
my only friend who's into metal only listens to metal bands with female lead vocals and metal bands from countries you wouldn't typically associate with having a metal scene. the only band he's ever talked about that i even recognize is arch enemy.
>>127924972your friend sounds like a simp
>>127922426Every single song on this so far is amazing. Totale Vernichtung 2.0
>>127924965>slam was started by devourmentMolesting the Decapitated is a landmark, but earlier releases by Broken Hope, Internal Bleeding, and the whole early 90's New England DM scene (besides Suffocation themselves) were how slam started.
>>127924981Don't you mean shrimp
>>127924965the fact stuff like "if your music has low bpm sections and breakdowns its this genre" "if your band has fast sections its this genre" is normal in the metal scene really limits songwriting. not just that example but the behavior as a whole. causes bands to shoehorn themselves into really formulaic one dimensional songwriting for way too long. i really dislike that aspect of metal. i hope we get some newgen tiktok ipad kids who are into metal and grow up without any conception of this shit and actually make music that wasn't done better in the 90s.
>>127924929Correct

>>127925002You may like Afterbirth's full lengths, especially the latest one. They take influences from outside BDM and metal in general quite a bit, without becoming genre salad. That's a band that first formed in the 90's, but plenty of newer acts aren't afraid to color outside the lines.

>>127925574the average male fans of anything other than rap or classic rock
I like the idea behind Gloryhammer but so many of their tracks don't sound ANYTHING like the bands they're trying to parody. They all have this "safe" sound to them that's so common with Napalm Records produced albums for some reason. Space 1992 is probably their best album and so many people thought it was a Warhammer 40k thing and not a parody of Prophet of the Last Eclipse because the two albums aren't similar in the slightest. It also feels like they ironically take themselves more seriously than the bands they parody because there was all this drama over copyright stuff when their vocalist quit while Rhapsody split up amicably.

>>127930303>thinking Heinrich Himmler would disapprove of Black Metal
>>127930432Nazis would have assuredly hated black metal. Hitler liked traditional, classical music like Wagner, Beethoven, and other Romantic composers. He hated modern or experimental music, calling things like jazz and atonal works degenerate because they didn't fit his ideas of order, tradition, and racial purity. Black metal, with its screeching vocals, noisy guitars, and chaotic sound, would also fall into the degenerate category for him. Even if the lyrics praised Nazism, he still would have dismissed it as degenerate instead of true "Aryan" art.
