It’s my first nicer acoustic. All of the acoustic guitars I’ve had in the last 20 years have been cheap garage sale finds and I just never bothered upgrading. I was wanting a D18 or D28 but this was in town and the guy was down for trading some stuff so it was really convenient, plus it feels and sounds great

Fender should buy the rights to G&L designs and incorporate some of them while still having the Fender headstock. They should also buy Epiphone before it goes under too but that's another issue.

Yes it is very much worth it! But it takes time and practice and a lot of memorization. I'd recommend the Alfred books over the Hal Leonard ones. Mel Bay is excellent too. The Alfred's Basic Guitar books 1,2,3 or complete or the Mel Bay - Modern Guitar Method Complete Expanded Volumes 1-7. I have all of them from all three publishing companies. Mel Bay has the most descriptions/words to help you learn. Alfred's has a lot of sub books that go WITH the series to help you learn - like theory/exercises.

Thing is, it leaves you in a weird spot. You already know how to read chord frames/diagrams but when seeing those chord as stacked notes on the Treble Clef it's way different and much harder to identify. It's hard to explain until you see it. Chords as stacked notes means you need to be able to identify all relevant notes at ONE TIME and one glance. None of this line/space mnemonic stuff. So you really need to be able to identify intervals at a glance. I can't do it and it frustrates me and I don't know how to bridge this gap because all the books just magically introduce chords to you without any explanation on how to process what you're seeing visually. They go from melody notes (single notes) to harmony (chords) in one page without giving you any reading tips or instruction. It pisses me off.

it's a sweetwater exclusive spec. i'm guessing they did it and went with the "select hardwood" neck to save money on the list price. it's got the herringbone, zigzag, and long cut saddle at $3800 so pretty good deal. the wood is nice too, it seems like they just specd an authentic d28 but cut costs where it didn't really matter. my neck appears to be genuine mahogany going by the grain structure

All Martins have select "hardwood" necks, but it's almost always Mahogany. Second option is cedar, but it's rare. It's just what they have around, but it's just hog. They're just covering their asses in the slim chance they runs out at times.

They didn't cut costs. Like I said, all Martins have select hardwood necks. Always have. It just so happens that it's usually mahogany.

I'll stand corrected on that.. but it's been awhile since they started. That spec is on all guitars now. I wouldn't be surprised if they occasionally used this practice even older, but who knows. Even Fender didn't always use Alder bodies. Sometimes they swapped in something else without telling. There are rare mahogany 60s Strats out there. All of this detailed spec autism is more modern.

Anyone know anything about Sigma guitars? I was given a Korean made Sigma 12 string and from what I can gather it’s basically Martin’s Squier or Epiphone equivalent being cheaper Asian made guitars. I was doing some work for an old couple and the wife gave it to me because she has bad arthritis and can’t play anymore. She said she gave it to her brother in the 1980s and when he died she got it it back and it’s been hanging on the wall for 10+ years unplayed.

I'm going rack and you can't stop me!
>>
>>127930995
It's not a mystery. Just look at the grain if you really need to know. But the neck on an acoustic is not a tonewood anyways. It's about stability. So it's hog or cedar. Both stable enough to be used even without truss rods (although Martin started using those in the 70s, I think). They're also quartersawn to boot. So even more stable.
I think the main reason why they leave it open is they only use genuine (Honduran) hog. Which in itself is getting to be as threatened as rosewood. You might see a lot of mahogany specs out there, but look closely and you'll often find it's not Honduran. Often it's African.

some manufacturers will also list sipo and sapele as mahogany as well. they're in the same family but different genus and species. even african and honduran mahogany are a different genus. like you said though it's all about stiffness and they've been using spanish cedar on necks for 200 years or more. nothing wrong with it

>>
>>127931360
yeah but also consider major manufacturers are making literally 10x as many instruments as they did in the 40s-60s. cocobolo became popular and basically went extinct within our lifetime. if you really want to split hairs fender used alder and maple and martin started using mahogany in the 30s because it was easier to get (cheaper)

Bought an electric guitar last week to learn to play and I feel like I'm just not made for this. I'm 5'6" with tiny hands and I just feel so defeated trying to play.

Been following Justin guitar's course and reached Peter Gunn's theme and I feel like it's impossible for me to put all 4 fingers on all 4 frets simultaneously. My fingers are just too short to cover the distance.

Is this a thing or am I just untrained with my fingers. It seems so hopeless.
>>
>>127931505
what guitar did you buy, you can always swap out the neck for small fingers
>>
>>127931505
untrained, uncoordinated. You only need to span about three frets for about all chords. 5 frets for legatto. If you play farther up the neck, the spacing is closer. Hand size means nothing.
>>
>>127931505
What scale is your guitar? Try a Fender Mustang or other short scale guitar.
>>
>>127931505
Jaguars and Duo-Sonics have smaller necks, but the strings can be tuned the same way
>>
>>127931505

>>
>>127931526
It's a cheap Squier Sonic. I don't really have anyone who plays that I could ask for advice, so just went with a cheap one not knowing if splurging big on first guitar is the way
>>
>>127931505
you're untrained. i have little sausage fingers and played full scale bass. your hand will become more limber and stretch farther but you will also develop a technique called micro shifting. with that being said, putting your thumb over the back of the neck and muting or playing the A string is purely genetic. you either have banana hands or you don't
>>

But can they play it worth a dang? Anyone can fumble their way through eruption.

just like finding your picking hand it takes time. muscle memory is created while you sleep. when you feel like you have a day where you're playing really well spend an extra 10 minutes playing focusing on how the muscles feel when playing. trust the process, you're training the body to detect variances that are fractions of inches. you got this

>>
>>127931601
>Idek what scale means.
It's the length of the strings. A shorter scale means less distance between each fret. The most common scales are 24.75" and 25.5". While it's only 3/4" difference, the difference when playing is noticeable. The Fender Mustang is only 24". But they make scales even shorter than that: The Jackson Minion, Ibanez Mikro, Squier Mini. Go to a large online retailer like Sweetwater and filter on scale length.

My Yamaha Revstar and my CIJ Mustang, plus a little cash on my end. The Revstar was cool but I don’t need another 2x P90 guitar, and the Mustang was really cool but needed a little work plus I’ve already got another Mustang I like considerably more. If I were to sell the two guitars I might get $500 for the Revstar and maybe $1100 for the Mustang, and then I’d put that money toward a nice acoustic anyway. He was asking $2k for the Gibson so he took the two guitars plus $450 and that was more than fair for me especially since I got to play the guitar in person rather than buying something blindly online. It’s a very nice sounding guitar

The Revstar specifically was really cool but it had a few things spec wise that I just didn’t prefer so it didn’t get played as much as my other P90 guitars

It’s a great guitar. If the neck was a rounder radius I’d have kept it. I wholly believe that for sub $1000 it’s very hard to beat a Revstar, they’re a lot of guitar for the money. They’re really killer, I’ve just got others that are functionally the same that I like better (but that also cost $1000-$1500 more, dollars to donuts it’s still hard to beat the Revstar money wise)

Ive been practicing nickelback today since they have a few 5 string bass songs. And I'm being extremely nostalgic cause the last time I heard these songs was 15 years ago. Then nostalgia turns into distress because I wish I would've started playing years ago.

they're all mass built guitars if you're buying entry level american, so you need to try them all individually. taylors are too bright imo unless you're finger picking.

Sonics are surprisingly good compared to Squiers from the 00s and 2010s. Is it a Strat? Like other anons have said, a Mustang would be better for your situation due to the smaller scale. I would keep the Strat or whatever you have and get a Sonic Mustang as well, they’re pretty affordable.
>>
>>127931505
Get a kid's guitar. Either acoustic or electric. They don't have to be shitty quality either so shop around. Also, electrics are easier to play than acoustics but a classical guitar may be more your thing with vinyl strings. They do have travel guitars too that are smaller in all dimensions.

Met a guy at GC once who kinda looked like Petrucci except he was far more jacked, looked like a marvel character or something out of a movie, anyway he was playing electric ukeleles with reverb pedals and singing A Little More Time On You by the backstreet boys in the most soul shattering emotional vocal vibrato you've ever heard it was almost ethereal and the whole place was vibing hard until he squirted liquid diarrhea onto the wall of guitars behind him and shuffled out of there without saying another word.
