What’s the deal with G&L guitars?
They’re supposed to be the evolution of Fender
better hardware, hotter pickups, improved bridges…
and yet, everyone still goes, “Yeah, but does it say Fender on the headstock?”
It’s like ordering a steak from the guy who invented steak
and people saying, “Eh, I’ll stick with the hamburger.”
And the resale value? Forget it!
You buy one new, you take it home, it loses half its worth just from opening the case!
It’s like driving a car off the lot… if the car was invisible and nobody believed it existed.

had a dumb idea, what if you put a pickup on the opposite side of the strings, right across from each other? could only do it in the neck position so it doesn't interfere with picking as much. i guess the easiest way would be to take a cheap strat with a middle pickup, take that one out and insert it into a u-shaped holding bracket screwed intothe body as in pic related.
I wonder what would happen, if it'd sound any different in a good way.

Enough with the fear porn. G&Ls won't magically vapourize when the company closes. Just get a used one.

I think it's better to remember the intervals/relations to notes, but learn the basic triad chords first, as this can help with shell voicings

You should do both. Start with whatever you feel the most motivated for rn (right now).

>>127938718
i prefer the 3 tempo method. the middle tempo where you're can just play something clean enough, the lower tempo where you clean up your tone and timing and the rough spots, and the higher tempo where you build speed and coordination. you get your middle tempo just right and the other two should only be +-10-15% of your middle tempo speed.

boy the quality of this general really bottoms out during eurasia hours, huh?

I need tenor banjo strings so I can try and be the lighting bolt bassist. But I think I'll get a 2nd 5 string bass for that. And I'll get a new set of 5 strings and maybe new strings for the 4 strings just to get practice in with changing strings.
>>
>>127941859
$40 is nothing to me. i'm concerned with the tone
>>
Something happened, but I feel like my playing has improved drastically. I feel so confident on the fretboard, new phrases spring up and I'm generally feeling happier when playing.

I didn't do anything to achieve that though. I did have the intention of trying to improve my theory and general knowledge. I started learning to play the piano, which made me think more about the actual notes in chords and intervals. I did start a video course, but quit that again after being disappointed with it.
None of that could explain my "progress". How come? I've been playing for 20 years now and was stuck on advanced beginner. But the last couple of weeks pushed me into intermediate, without really consciously doing anything for it.

Either way, I'm still looking for a better structured way to keep learning and improving. There has to be something better than just looking up random videos on Youtube about triads, intervals and harmony.

>>
>>127942166
you either got more confidence, improvised slightly while playing along with the backing tracks, or stopped thinking about theory or shapes on the guitar because you didn't think about those things on piano. thinking about theory makes my playing worse. i learn melodies and play them on the guitar and use that as a springboard for improvisation

These kinds of finishes always signal "look at how expensive this guitar was to make," which is exceptionally retarded at the best of times, but especially so when the guitar is some cheap shit Ibanez. those $40 martin strings are very interesting. when you strum chords they are very close to being as warm as phosphor bronze, when you pick the low strings the bass is more defined as it has a bit more low mids i think, and the B and E strings are stainless so they get more high mids and presence which help them cut through on leads and sound louder. which also has the effect of making your sus and 7 chords really pop since the higher notes have more presence. they also have about 50% more sustain than phosphor bronze which is really cool at the cost of a slight amount of actual volume, which shouldn't really be a problem since you're gaining some mids. if these last as long as they say i'll keep being them, great for martins since they're naturally very lacking in treble.

they bought bourgeois, and make the bourgeois touchstone guitars. dana bourgeois voices the tops and ships them to eastman and they build the rest. they no longer use name brand tuners or nitro finish on any of their instruments and they have adopted the bright bourgeois tone in their acoustic guitars. these things may sound inconsequential but 1) why the fuck would you pay $1000+ for a chinese guitar and not get good tuners and 2) it's evident of a paradigm shift in the company. it's a downward trend that could very well get worse over time. you might find some good models here and they but i wouldn't expect every eastman to be as good as they have been before the acquisition

>>
>>127944662
they had a nitro option for the 59 just a few years ago. i think some of their upper end acoustics were also nitro. they still do the varnish finish on some models. i'm not saying their complete shit now but you can't order one without playing it first and know it's going to be good anymore is what i'm getting at
>>
>>127939398
Half the features are missing. No locking trem, no rhythm circuit. To each their own but I would save up for a used Jag or better, a newer MIJ Jag.
>>
>>127944633
I actually prefer the thin poly finish they do- it feels very nice and wears attractively. The back of my acoustic has worn away from my belt buckle. Nitro is retarded desu imo it just tries to kill itself constantly and feels like gum. Tuners- eh, I have two of the cheaper Eastmans and they stay in tune very well. I don’t know what the tuners on the strat one are, but the acoustic has pingwells (I don’t know what that is but they’re great)
>>
>>127943750
If 8 tracks are enough for you, then yes. Ableton Live was a blessing for me, because it makes looping and jamming alone so much easier.
>>
>>127944690
Oh yeah facts I wouldn’t buy one without trying it. When I bought the acoustic I was open to spending a lot more and tried some of the higher end ones, one sounded a bit dead and another had fucked up edges on the rolled fretboard. The little E1om I bought rang like a bell and felt great so I saved a bunch. Also tried some vintage Gibsons and mid tier Martins but they were all a bit shit
>>
>>127944749
nitro is great once it cures, it's not longer sticky. i have one of their cheap acoustics with the new poly finish it's ok, thin enough you can see the grain but the tuners are shit. like i said it's not the end of the world but it's not as good as any of the models with real tuners on them, and personally i'd rather play a shitplank with gotoh 510s over a boutique guitar with no name china tuners any day of the week

If you want to support them, get at least Standard. Standard doesn't have any real track limitations, has more usable effects (like a proper parametric EQ).

>what kind of pickup do you prefer?
My preference for single-coil pickups stems from their distinctive tonal qualities—clarity, brightness, and articulation—that resonate deeply with my musical sensibilities. Unlike humbuckers, which offer thicker, more homogenized sound, single-coils produce a shimmering, transparent tone that allows every nuance of my playing to shine through. This crystalline quality lends itself well to genres like blues, funk, and classic rock, where precision and expressiveness are paramount. Additionally, single-coil pickups are highly responsive—they pick up subtle variations in string vibrations and dynamics, fostering a more intimate and interactive relationship between player and instrument. This responsiveness encourages a nuanced, conversational approach, making each note and vibrato feel purposeful and emotionally charged. Culturally, iconic artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Holly exemplify the expressive potential of single-coils. Their bright, bell-like tones evoke nostalgia while maintaining timeless appeal. Although the susceptibility to electromagnetic hum can be a drawback, I see this as a manageable trade-off for the sonic clarity and expressive versatility they provide. Ultimately, my affinity for single-coil pickups lies in their ability to deliver articulate, responsive, and emotionally evocative sounds. They invite a more nuanced interaction with the instrument—qualities that transcend technical specs and tap into the very soul of electric guitar playing.

Is it possible to be so punk rock it cancels it out? Like the ouroboros? The snake eating its own tail? For instance, Weezer is punk adjacent, but if they strayed from up-lifting happy punk they would be selling out to the man. If they stay the same they are granola rockers. If they go pop the punk fans drop them. So you must strive to be unique but have a core value. A synthesized web of choices based on input. A thought experiment: Every choice you make, can be measured, what is the most punk rock thing to do while still being moral and good. For instance someone waves you through a four way stop and they stopped first. They have the legal right of way, and are technically coercing you into committing a petty crime. Do you follow their request, and take the path of least resistance? Give them a rude gesture? Wait as long as it takes for them to go? Brinkmanship. Or put it in reverse to show them they can go? After all, they are just trying to be safe and polite. Do you get out of your car and escalate a potential argument? Or do you just turn right to get away from this total goober? Or, perhaps the most punk rock thing is to not have a reason.
