This general is dedicated to the discussion of traditional heavy metal and its many sub-genres. Before posting, please view the link below and familiarize yourself with what we do/do not allow.
Guidelines: https://pastebin.com/7cJ7xZy8

>Is [genre/band/album] fit for /trad/?
If you have to ask this, it probably isn’t and you should take what you want to talk about somewhere else.
>When will charts be added to the OP?
Once we finish all of the main 1980s charts and move onto the '90s.

USEFUL LINKS
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1luaLZfavSeXui9RkO1PZ3U5gAE1XHfkH?usp=drive_link - Giant archive of old metal & rock magazines.
https://www.metal-archives.com/ - Search for your favorite bands and look under the “similar artists” tab.
https://en.metal-tracker.com/ - Bittorrent tracker from Russia, in order to use it you need to have a registered account.
https://rateyourmusic.com/ - Search for albums, charts and lists here. (Some early trad albums have metal as a secondary rather than primary; so when looking for music from the early-mid ‘70s make sure you include heavy metal as a secondary in your filter as well.)

The 1986 chart is still in progress. If you missed out (or want to suggest something else), reply to this post with what albums you want included. Here is the criteria:
1 Vote = Put on the list.
2 Votes = Put on the list and has a higher chance of being included.
3+ Votes = Guaranteed to be on the chart.

What do you guys think of this album? I'm always conflicted by it because while it has some really good material like the title track and Rage, it also has one very clear flop with Out on the Streets and a few other songs that just aren't on the same level as the highs.

They can play their instruments really well, but the vocals are just not powerful enough for power/thrash. Songwriting is also quite hit and miss too, with nearly all of the choruses on this record just sounding bizarre or even unfinished; like there's a melody that should be there but isn't.

Listened to these four albums during work last night.
Helloween was very good.
Glenn Hughes was basically a continuation of Black Country Communion, also very good.
Alice Cooper sounded like 70s Alice Cooper, very good. Best production of the four too.
Volbeat was good, but the production was bad for being a 2025 album.

Here's a question though. Metal peaked around 2008. Since then I haven't heard anything that amazing or groundbreaking. Up until then new genres and styles were being invented, with folk metal being the last. In the 80s the boundary was constantly being pushed, 90s and early 00s brought some gems. The difference between 1982 and 1986 in metal was huge. Since 2008 metal has been pretty ossified. In fact the "traditional metal" sound hasn't changed much since 1985. "Djent" doesn't have any appeal to me. What did I miss in the entire decade of the 2010s? And I don't mean individual albums, but major movements, innovation.
>>
>>128019723
This is actually pretty good. It convinced me with the first neoclassical lead. The riffing is chunky. And the rhythms have a proggy quality to them.
>>
>>128019723

>What did I miss in the entire decade of the 2010s? And I don't mean individual albums, but major movements, innovation.
In terms of trad? Nothing really, that ship's long since sailed. Though there are occasionally new bands that break through and make something semi-unique (never to the point of making something brand new however, you'd need to go to the REALLY out there genres in order to get something like that).

Off of the top of my head, some of my favorite Priest songs are:

Exciter
Dreamer Deceiver (two-way tie between Exciter, depends on mood honestly)
Sinner
Delivering the Goods
Beyond the Realms of Death
Diamonds & Rust
Starbreaker
Metal Meltdown
Heroes End
White Heat, Red Hot
Saints in Hell
Deceiver
Hell Bent for Leather

>>
>>128020559
Production sounds a bit processed for my tastes but the song outside of that is really good ('specially that part you timestamped, sexy lead playing right there)
>>
>>128020603
Rawer production has its charm but I think good production is just good production (plus this song is 23 years old), things should be clear so you can hear them, and guitars should have enough overdrive.

Priest's most power metal song, at least lyrically, imo. Just listen to those lyrics.

Let me hear the battle cry
Calling on the wind
Let me see the banners fly
Before the storm begins

Let me feel the spirits soar
Destroy the enemy
Striking at the evil core
For all the world to see

This day will last forever
Deep in the hearts of men
Courage and victory
Remember, remember

One Shot At Glory
In the crossfire overhead
Fate stands before me
Words have all been said

One Shot At Glory
Driving hard and seeing red
Destiny calls me
One night of fire
One Shot At Glory

Fighting on with dignity
In life and death we deal
The power and the majesty
Amidst the blood and steel

I still hear the battle cry
The call goes on and on
I still see the banners fly
The battle's always won

How come Priest successfully updated their sound with elements of thrash and Euro speed metal with Painkiller but then when they tried the same thing with AOR and glam metal with Turbo and Ram It Down it was mediocre, and then when they tried it with groove metal and nu-metal on the RIpper Owens albums it was a trainwreck?
>>
>>128023120
Painkiller was made with the sole purpose of being proving that JP weren't dead in the water and could still make good shit
Whereas those other albums are chasing industry trends
>but then when they tried the same thing with AOR and glam metal with Turbo and Ram It Down it was mediocre
By all intents and purposes, Turbo was a good idea. JP had plenty of rocking, glammy songs in their early '80s output but they fumbled by not making the songs on Turbo memorable. They're catchy, but outside of like 2 songs the entire record just goes by like a short gust of wind

If any of you haven't listened to this yet, make this the next record you check out - it's almost King of the Dead tier

While the notes themselves do sound similar, Electric Funeral is overall way more blues-y, has extra reverb, an overall heavier sound, and the tone shifts between somewhat ominous and more traditionally "rocking" for lack of a better word, while Remember Tomorrow is mostly melancholic-introspective with some more dynamic and even slightly epic parts
>>128022141
It is a glam (hair, whatever) metal song
>>128023176
Speed metal is good and compatible with Priest's sound (it's basically fast, high-pitched (especially in terms of vocals) heavy metal, and they've made fast songs in the past, with Halford's vocals being definitely suited for the style). I wouldn't call it thrash. I also don't remember Ram It Down being that glammy (or that bad) to be put in the same category as Turbo

It's heavy/speed metal. Maybe with a more epic feel, which might actually bring it closer to USPM. I don't think it sounds like Blind Guardian (of course it's not worlds apart either). Something about the general atmosphere/feel maybe, I can't put my finger on it, but it lacks the more... otherworldly? feel of EUPM

The screaming in this song always makes me laugh.

What’s with the Turbo hate boner? It’s a better album than Somewhere in Time and I prefer it to Defenders of the Faith.

>YOU'VE GOT THE KEY
>THE KEY TO MY HEEAAAART
If you're driving and listening to Locked In, as soon as that intro riff kicks in you're legally forced to put the pedal to the metal.

I don't think it's bad outside of a few songs but I'd be lying if I said it's as good as DotF. (Well, the A side anyways. Turbo Lover and DotF's B side may as well be identical to me in terms of quality.)

The fuck is with that filter applied to the vocals? I'm listening to some of the first track and it sounds like the thing psych rock bands do

I LIKE LETHAL. This guy went to Geoff Tate 80s school of singing and passed with an A++:

You could say this was Geoff Tate and I'd believe you without question
Really good stuff right here

Their other albums aren't as good unfortunately. The 'Programmed' album is awesome though. No bad songs, bit like Mindcrime and can tell it was a big influence on them.

Sucks, but at least they have a killer debut. I'll add it to my library and check it out soon.

It's one of the best. Tom Mallicoat is the singer. Probably more of him on Youtube, but this is very Geoff Tate also:

This guy's vocals man. The song outside of them is still very good but that performance sells it.

One of the most disappointing concerts I've seen was MSG with Robin McAuley on vocals. Robin McAuley still sings like a god, but they played ZERO songs from the McAuley Schenker Group era, which is my Schenker favourite albums.

Yes, awesome singer. It weirded me out abit when I first saw the live stuff on Youtube. I was expecting him to look like Geoff Tate also lol.

>>128032393
MSG was pretty good in Wacken this year. Not an expert on his stuff, but like the new singer also:

Fuck it, I'll just go listen to the album right now. Got nothing else to do today. :P

It's a great album!
Diggy Diggy Hole just came on my Youtube algorithm. Good song also lol.

On the first song, it's incredible. The production is punchy, everything is audible, Tom's singing is on another level... I should've checked this out sooner. It's like the lost '80s Queensryche album.
>>
>>128032534
Yes, no bad songs at all on it I think. It's rare for any album to be like that. I first heard it from an anon on /meal/ well over a year or two ago. I wouldn't have known about it otherwise myself. Good 80s metal needs more exposure for sure. I'm of the opinion that some bad actors want only crap music for the masses, in order to 'dumb humanity down', cause they probably feel betrayed by the 'system' for liking grunge or something, and grunge died and 80s hair metal never did. That's my theory anyways lol.
