Favorite Schumann chamber piece?
>>128018282I always get him confused with Schubert
>>128018282I don't listen to much Schumann at all but I've recently learned to play his first piece of the Gesange der Fruhe for piano and it's a sweet little piece, I might learn the rest of the opus later
>>128018282Ah, he's got so many. Violin sonatas, piano trios, string quartets, piano quartet and quintet, various cello pieces like the Fantasiestücke... anyway, favorite would have to be the piano quartet and quintet. Supreme masterpieces.Piano Quartethttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt-KnX46yewPiano Quintethttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qab8uZUMfRY

what would you say are the main aspects you focus on when listening to music?
I can't stop listening to Beethoven's piano sonatas, so good! Lately with a focus on the early ones (No. 16 and before). I should start leaning more heavily on the ones after that.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uqp1wMwU3yk
Essential Beethoven Piano Sonata cycles
>>128018507I'm just listening to enjoy. I guess sometimes I'm trying to keep up with the form.
>>128018526>fucking Levit but no Ohlsson or Goodyearwell at least you have Kempff and Gulda there
Any pianists have cheap electric keyboard recommendations?
Only worthwhile Beethoven cycles>Backhaus>Arrau>Gilels
>>128018543Ohlsson has a cycle? Didn't know. I recognize the craftsmanship and vitality of Goodyear's cycle but it's too fast, too virtuosic for me. I like my Beethoven with less aggression and power, more poetics and sensitivity. One could argue virtuosity, aggression, and power are essential to the true Beethoven spirit, a point I wholly respect, but it just doesn't sound good to me. Maybe someday I'll come around on it. I'm gonna give it a full listenthrough soon. Many critics agree with you on it though.
>>128018582retarded boomer>>128018589Ohlsson is to me the essential modern cycle. check out his No. 23.
They're not going to let this fatso win the Chopin competition I bet. It has to be some beautiful woman or a handsome man
>>128018526if you're a period instrument guy like me, listen for Ronald Brautigam's cycle
>>128018582Love Backhaus but I haven't heard his cycle in ages, and I recognize it's not for everyone, and in fact one could argue his positive traits have since been supplanted by more modern cycles. I'll have to revisit it before I truly decide.
>>128018627That's the cycle I give to someone I hate for Christmas. Teasing. I'm sure his is great if you're into that sound but I am not, sorry.
>>128018663Understandable. My logic is that it's what Beethoven would've heard. There may not be much of a difference, but I think there is.
>>128018684"heard" who am I kidding
>>128018684>beethoven>heard
Beethoven wasn't born deaf though.
>>128018684Meh, things like that don't factor into my thinking whatsoever, I just look for whatever sounds best to me, whichever satisfies the aesthetic traits I desire.
>>128018561Dear music lover,Looking for a budget-friendly electric keyboard? There are great options under $300 that offer solid sound and playability for pianists. Here are some recommendations and tips to guide your choice. The Yamaha PSR-E373 (~$200) is a fantastic 61-key keyboard with touch-sensitive keys, 622 voices (including quality piano tones), and features like a metronome, lesson mode, and USB MIDI connectivity. Its semi-weighted keys and built-in speakers make it ideal for beginners or casual players. It’s versatile, with 150+ accompaniment styles for jamming. The Casio CDP-S160 (~$250–$300) is a step up, with 88 weighted, hammer-action keys that feel closer to an acoustic piano. It has 10 tones, including a warm grand piano sound, and a slim, 24-lb design. With USB MIDI, headphone jack, and sustain pedal input (pedal not included), it’s perfect nigger for pianists wanting authenticity on a budget. For portability, the Alesis Recital (~$200) offers 88 semi-weighted, touch-sensitive keys, five voices, and a lesson mode. Its 20-watt speakers and USB MIDI make it great for practice or music production. At 15.7 lbs, it’s easy to move. For beginners, the RockJam RJ761 (~$120–$150) is a 61-key bundle with a stand, bench, pedal, and headphones. It has 100 voices and rhythms but non-weighted keys, best for casual use.Prioritize weighted keys for a piano-like feel if you’re serious about technique. Ensure touch sensitivity for dynamics and check for USB MIDI if you use music software. Bundles save money, and sales on Amazon or Sweetwater can lower costs. Used keyboards from Reverb or local shops are also worth exploring. The Casio CDP-S160 is my top pick for pianists, but all these options deliver value. Happy playing!Best,A pianist

In the end, everything is ultimately all about Wagner. He is the prophet. The one who will guide us to salvation. This planet should turn into a giant place of worship, where everyone comes together dressed in togas to recite and celebrate "Wagner" around a bonfire. The world as Wagner envisioned, a world with merriment and joy. All people regardless of color, culture and race united in one spirit.

Sure, the popular idiomatic ones like Hewitt and Perahia and less well-known romantc ones like Maria Tipo and Irma Issakadze are pretty enjoyable, but I wish there were more like Koroliov's -- slow, contemplative, poetic. I guess I can't really complain because they are supposed to be dance-like. Anyway, let's see how Goode does it, I'm sure it'll be solid.
>>128019283People still use AAC?
I don't listen to any recordings from the 21st century because I'm afraid it's going to infect my taste with its spiritually inferior performance quality.
>>128020959That is a good practice. Not listening to any modernist performers, as in anyone born after 19th century is even more admirable.
Can't tell if having a different favorite performer/recording for each Beethoven piano sonata is based, excessively autistic, or even outright silly.

>>128022214This, but the exact opposite.Conductors who don't compose, pianists who can't improvise, aren't worth shit. You can clearly hear this from the golden age of recordings. All the expressiveness those composers brought is lost in time.
>>128022568>Conductors who don't compose, pianists who can't improvise, aren't worth shit.I agree, but the opposite isn't true. You can have great composers who are middling conductors. Think of Stravinsky.

Took me a bit to realize the genius of Gulda's Beethoven. His cycle has the rare distinction of sounding amazing every sonata, every movement, every note, which many of the other great cycles can't even do. You put on any sonata from his and you're struck with 'damn, he pulls it off.'

Relating to the topic the other thread, y'know what piece I've found is ironically awful for falling asleep to? Bach's Goldberg Variations. There's way too much going on, too beautiful, too vivacious. Maybe how it was originally performed on the harpsichord was different, given what it was written for, but yeah, whenever I've tried using it to sleep, I end up staying up and having to change to something else.
