If you're anything else but a form purist and a skill rebel on this chart then you don't actually get prog

Well, they sang "I'm a Believer". Whoe else sang "I'm a Believer"? Robert Wyatt.
Ergo, Smash Mouth is prog.

serious question
up until the very late 60s, there was little proficiency in rock music
there was one or another guitarist who was great at playing the blues, or a more skilled drummer, but overall the bar wasn't that high
so how the fuck was it that, seemingly out of nowhere, a whole generation of amazing musicians came to be and created prog rock?
where were they before, and how has no other rock subgenre before or since been so filled with brilliant and highly skilled musicians?

Interesting. Does this mean the best way to get Americans to use "are" instead of "is" for collective nouns is to have "The" at the start of your band name?

no it wasn't
Clapton was called the greatest guitarist in the world in 67 for his pentatonic noodling, and two years later, Fripp was soloing in 21st Century Schizoid Man
The Soft Machine went from playing silly pop songs to odd jazz infused psychedelia in a year's notice
Yes was playing Beatles covers, and out of nowhere started playing intricate and complex music
the bar was raised incredibly high in very little time

people in general don't like it for some reason. weird since it's so good. any albums that sound like it anyone? I found it pretty unique, it doesn't even have a proper genre since it's just a mix of various things

>people in general don't like it for some reason
That's crazy to me. There's definitely some camp in there, but the music is all really good. Genre is a mix of space-rock, psych-folk and prog, nothing too out there.
