What's the best way to learn a sweeping part? I've never really practiced sweeping before. Is it just playing it slowly and speeding up little by little until you get there or is there something I should be paying attention to while practicing the piece? Looks difficult as fuck already, I play it at 60% speed so far and I have no idea how the hell am I gonna get to 100.

Also fuck you, Kirk. Sweeping is hard.

probably just get used to the feel of sweeping through the open strings first. that's one of those techniques that doesn't really work when you do it slowly. then focus really hard on the timing then work on cleaning it up when the technique feels comfortable. sweeping is all about the timing

I'll give that a shot, thanks. Really do wanna learn this solo, and sweeping in general. It's a really cool technique to play around with. Honestly though, I find it harder to get my fingers in on the proper frets so quickly than I find controlling the pick up and down, although that feels really weird too when going up the strings towards the bass side.
>>
>>128070974
yeah sweeping is just hammer ons and pull offs, that's why you gotta get really comfortable with the timing. you can probably do hammers ons and pull offs but they just feel harder because the timing is tighter on sweeping. definitely going to recommend practicing with a metronome on this one

If you can rake, you can sweep. The secret is to start with a thick pick. 2mm seems excessive until you plow through strings like butter. Make sure it’s worn in on both sides - those little burrs will get you jacked up.

Pick slanting is useful to reduce friction, but you need the correct angle of attack in both directions.

When changing directions, there’s a split second you need to fill space. That’s where most people put in a hammer-on or pull off to mask it. If you’re looking to avoid this, Marshall Harrison has SWYBRYD, which combines sweeping and hybrid picking. It requires a slightly different pick grip, but you can add large interval leaps. I’m just integrating this into my playing, but it feels like letting a cat and then pinching its fur. If you have banjo rolls at your disposal, then a backward roll can get you into some cascading sounds. Hell, you can add simultaneous double stops which is something that sweeping can’t do w/o note separation.

The easiest analogy is rubbing a comb. Slow and messy? That’s a rake. Muted and fast? That’s more like a sweep. But you’ll notice that the sweep is easier to not get caught in the tines of the comb at speed; slow, you’ll get jacked up on the changing string gauges.

Also, economy picking is kissing cousins to sweeping. You’ll find that you’ll start to do Allan Holdsworth style legato naturally if you can’t be bothered to alternate pick a note (hammering from nowhere technique). And at speed, most alternate picking transforms into economy picking anyways.

Last, pay attention to your RH muting. Not everything has to be staccato. To test this, try a 3-string sweep in a dissonant key (like Bb) against open strings. If you hear the other harmony, you’re not muting well enough.

The 500 one. Also I think that one is from the inspired by Gibson series. I don't remember seeing a special with p90s in any other price range for Epiphone.

And yeah, that Epi in particular is getting glazed left and right so there must be something to it. I really like the look of it (minus that neck pocket) and I love the simplicity of it. Barebones, just the way I want it these days. NOT having stuff like coil splits is a bonus for me. Also really wanna try out p90s after basically only playing hbs.

>woah woah woah don’t lie to the boy
Slash chords can have any bass note that is in or outside the chord; inversions are just the spelling of a chord based on which chord tone is lowest. Inversions tend to stop with 7th chords, as putting the extensions in the bass changes the entire harmonic structure. Inversion and voicing are more similar terms, but rarely does anyone say can you play Drop 2 & 4 chord/arpeggio unless you’re doing Gil Evans-style arranging.

For example C/D is not an inversion unless it was an add9 chord. And even then that’s a stretch because the bass makes it more of a Dsus4b7add9 sound than C D E G (which is just a Cmajoradd9 chord). That C/D usually precedes a resolution to G (it’s called a pop 5 chord because it’s used in every damn prechorus)

As >>128072582 said, it comes down to context. And the purpose of chord charts is to give the map, not the territory. If I’m reading a chart and I see C C/E C/F C/G, I don’t think inversions, I just think the bass player is up to no good.

Weird slash chords like Bb/E exist, but after going through the entire real book and playing every single chord, the tunes that have those types of chords tend to suck or sound like late-stage academic jazz.

Eventually you learn all these rules until they turn gay. Then you forget them and try to play intuitively. I was just listening to Wire’s “Pink Flag” and most of the power chords are inversions (5-1-5, or ADA for instance). Because of the overtones, it sounds heavy and clear.

You're always fighting the intonation a little and the binding edge because there's no contour under the picking arm. I suppose the upper frets are a reach. Toggle is perfect but the other controls are a little out of the way. The pickguard style is idk and it can break. The guitar never sounds as pure as a strat, but it can often be more musical. I like the weight, balance, tune-o bridge, flatter neck, neck profile, scale. I don't think the guitar is the most amazing for looks but it is classic.

What are the least shit (yes I know >they are all shit) kit guitars out there? Thinking of building a leftie Esquire as a Christmas project, I have the woodworking chops to deal with your usual reshaping/sanding/finishing type stuff and can wire up the pickups fine, but would probably rather something that isn't going to have a fucked neck out of the box or whatever. Are all of the chinkybrands much of a muchness now, or are there ones to look out for?

Gm /gg/. Little personal blog update: My San dimas plus and powercab 212 cl arrive at the store tomorrow. Have an appointment to buy a 2007 Prius with new ev battery at 10am that should be a good reliable car and haul my gear. Still waiting to hear when the stadium xl will ship, but word on the street is in the next 2 weeks. Everything is looking up.

Oh also when you look at the specs for my guitar it says it’s a satin finish but that’s only the black model, the Snow White is gloss which I prefer.
>>
>>128075218
depends on your price range and how much of a kit you want. i heard the solo guitar kits are good, if you're just looking for a really good body and neck go warmoth
>>
don't work me into a shoot brother
>>
>>128075218
I’d just go with a fender Mexican body and neck of your choice on their website, get a set of custom broadcaster pickups and gotoh vintage bridge. Vintage USA tuning machines, pots and wiring. You should be able to get all this for under 1000 dollars and have a really sick playing and sounding tele.

https://www.fender.com/products/telecaster-solid-shaft-potentiometer-and-capacitor-kit-2-pack
>>
>>128075555
I didn’t realize you said esquire but you should still do everything else the same as long as they have a lefty neck and body on their website and then just wire it like a broadcaster. I meant nocaster pickups not broadcaster but same difference because they hadn’t changed the name to tele yet. Only problem is they don’t sell them separately

It looks like fender doesn't sell left handed tele bodies, but they do have this
https://www.fender.com/products/player-series-telecaster-left-handed-neck-22-medium-jumbo-frets-95-radius?variant=45940695367902

Alternatively you could just buy a warmoth body and find a 50s left handed neck somewhere. That's a modern C shape. I don't know how much being period accurate matters to you. If it doesn't, I'd get the player II neck.
>>
>>128075573
Or honestly, I'd just build a black guard blonde tele with whatever warmoth or used left handed body you can find and put those nocaster pickups in it with cts pots and vintage wiring. Get the gotoh bridge because it's got string slots and intonates better. Get a set of USA vintage tuners. I think you'll appreciate the neck pickup, and it'll be a ton easier than trying to build a left handed esquire. Plus you gotta buy both pickups anyway.
>>

https://reverb.com/item/91597666-fender-american-vintage-ii-51-telecaster-lefty-21-fret-maple-neck

If you wanted to do a really sick american fender build you could buy those put all that shit in it and it would be a dream guitar. Only reason I'm putting so much effort into this is because I plan to do the exact same thing. I want to put a black guard tele together with nocaster pickups as my next guitar. I might just buy whatever blonde american guitar complete I can find tho. Don't know yet.
>>
>>128075676
https://reverb.com/item/91847739-2015-2016-lefty-fender-pure-american-vintage-52-telecaster-guitar-body-blonde

blonde body if you'd rather that over butterscotch. If you have the cash man I'd build an american in nitro with an american neck. It'll be worth it. Do the rest yourself but get the good body and neck. And don't skimp on the pickups or pots / wiring / bridge / input jack and tuning machines. I bet for about 1500 dollars you could have a better than custom shop guitar if you put the time and effort into it.

If you still want to build the esquire the blonde body, vintera II 51 neck, and this pickguard with a set of nocaster pickups and a vintage bridge will get you there. I can't believe I found all the shit to complete a left handed esquire.

>>128075555
>>128075567
I'll consider it, to be honest I was more interested in a project guitar to work on and have something that is still playable at the end, I will consider buying a Fender neck and body as a starting point though. I really just want one of those early, somewhat cheap but reliable bridge pickup Esquires. Honestly the main concern for me is getting a good neck, I feel like just about anything with the body can be worked on but I don't want to be messing around with trying to fix a bum neck. Thanks for the input.
>>
>>128075731

>>
>>128075741
Oh I see, you didn't specify. That vintera II neck on reverb is going to be your best bet for a really good neck. otherwise the player II is fine but not period correct. If all you're looking to do is build a single pickup tele not an actual esquire then do whatever you like.

But name a song written on a blue guitar.
>>
>>128075597

>>
>>128075741
I was mostly confused because you said "esquire project" as in I thought you wanted a vintage style neck, body, pickups, pickguard etc. I have no idea what your budget is. You're not going to get anything near an esquire if you cheap out tho. It'll just be a partscaster with a single pickup. I'd still buy the fender neck cause necks are the hardest to do correctly and you get the real headstock and fender logo.
>>
>>128075755
>>128075781
My apologies anon, I am very thankful for the genuine help and am currently putting all of this in a notepad file for future confirmation. My budget was ranging anywhere from a few hundred if I just wanted to do a casual project ("partscaster with a single pickup" as you put it) to a couple of grand if I knew I'd get something decent at the end of it. I just don't want to be the mug who spends 10 grand on parts to build a 2 grand guitar, if you get what I mean.
All things going well the end goal would be a fairly early second run Esquire (so yeah, basically the single pickup broadcaster, I just always liked the look). I have thought about things I could involve later to make use of the three position switch but I'd just start basic. 1950 Esquires are beautiful but I fear if I started on the path to build one of those I'd end up down the path of madness. I'll look into the vintera II neck, thanks for the help anon.
>>
>>128075796
Man if you have the money build it right with the vintera neck and body. It’ll still be a long and fun project but you’ll end up with a guitar that plays amazing, sounds better, and you’ll be proud to show to everyone. You can still get an excellent period correct guitar with vintage pickups done for around 1500 which is half the price of a custom shop lefty esquire. If you build a cheap guitar you’re going to regret it later and always pine for what you actually want. I know, I’ve bought a lot of Mexican and import guitars. When you sit and stare at them you go man I should just sell it and get what I actually want.

Not him, but do ebony boards feel any different from maple or rosewood? I had ebony fretboards on my guitar growing up. I had a custom shop carvin telecaster with an ebony board back in the late 90s but I don't think I've played on many since then or really paid attention to it. My new guitar that's coming tomorrow has one though. Back in the day everyone ranted and raved about ebony fretboards over rosewood or maple.

>boards stained
They probably do. Especially acoustic players noticed that they stopped darkening them all the time. I'm just wondering if colouring it is that easy why they don't do it with shitty pau ferro, laurel or even bright rosewood as people would stop complaining all the time. I mean these newer materials are actually ugly and deserve all the hate. The results of people trying to darken those themselves weren't really good and the process is a pain in the ass. Guitar brands had it so much easier to dye them before fretting.
>>
>>128076131
Maybe they find it looking unnatural on the more traditional models, I know metal brands do it all the time to achieve perfectly dark fretboards
>>
>>128074718
anyone?
>>
>>128070371

How old were you when you grew up and came to the understanding (gnosis) that tone wood was the most important component in an electric guitar
>>
>>128076026
Maple fretboards are usually finished. Even if they aren't, they're relatively smoother than rosewood. The smoothness wouldn't be really that much of a drag unless you have very low frets. I dunno how they compare to ebony fretboards never had em.

>>128074718
Is it a swimming pool route behind the pickguard? Routing for a floyd requires more precision than just making a hole that fits enough for a humbucker. You should do what you want with your guitar but an anonymous ni/gg/er like me would not advise doing it yourself if you're not competent with woodworking for the floyd.

>>128076131
I surmise they don't stain those fretboard woods you mentioned as they're usually substitutes for the typical fretboards on regular priced models. They don't want to add the additional labor time and cost for budget instruments.
>but why don't they on higher priced ones
I dunno I've only seen those new fretboards introduced usually with entry to mid range priced guitars over the past decade
