I’m tired of tweaking my amp settings when swapping guitars, I’ve got to dial my EQ pedal in for my P90 guitars so I can just go from single coil guitars to P90 guitars with just hitting my pedal to tweak settings
>>
>>128146296
P90s are single coils, surely they'll still sound good at the same amp settings as a tele
>>
>>128146314
They need a little tweaking to get it how I like them. I tweak my amp settings with all of my guitars but these two are the ones I swap back and forth most. With my Teles I crank the treble and turn down the bass and with P90s I bring the treble down and bass up and instead of doing that on my amp all the time I’ll just have the EQ pedal set to get the P90 sound I want

I'm only ever home late at night anymore and haven't cranked my Deluxe Reverb in months.
It's sounds like absolute shit at low volume, lamest sounding amp ever when not cranked.
>>
>>128146116

No, the warbling was from a an offset stereo delay with the reverb and chorus. I couldn’t really get it to not do that until I changed the delay to mono and messed with the tempo. Idk. It’s just a stock neural preset I was messing around with. And then I added a tape saturation in Luna to warm it up. But I’m trying to figure out mainly how to level my input gains and tracks so I don’t get clipping. I have my interface set to 0 gain on instrument.

Anyway a little blog update I put a battery in my Prius and all the check engine codes went away so at least that stress is gone. Can enjoy my new guitar more soon.

1) learn the sound and shape of your scales
2) steal and learn licks, phrases, solos you like and use your knowledge of the scales to transcribe them in 10% of the time it would take you without
3) hum a solo to a backing track in your head, transcribe it then play it (repeat this step 100 times)
4) hum a solo and learn to play it in real time (repeat this step 200 times)
5) play what you hear in real time
6) construct better solos by working more on your timing and rhythm, gain more vocabulary, and explore commonly used techniques like motif/chord tones/arpeggios

it’s not about playing the scale it’s about hearing it internal so well that you can play it by ear. If you hum a solo and transcribe it, you’ll find that it naturally flows in and out of many different scales. playing scalar sounds fucking awful and it’s why you see so many YouTube vids wanking over how people put a major 3rd or 6th in their minor solo. It’s cause the artists are playing in sounds not scales

you need to understand that there is an implied difference between understanding and learning guitar, but as someone who has learned pretty extensive theory: yes his videos are one of the best
>>
>>128148038
I should add that Scotty’s videos are more like demystifying functional theory for the guitar. you can’t watch all his videos and then go play a song by ear. you have to put in the practice of internalizing the theory and hearing the harmonic and melodic context of the ideas presented. it’s more of a pair of glasses that Scotty gives you to help see everything you are about to learn on guitar in the future more clearly

Guitar noob here. How am I meant to memorise a full scale? For example, I know the C major Scale when it's set to vertical on that website, I know every note and using that knowledge, I can figure out the entire fretboard since each note is a whole tone over from the last, besides e-f and b-c, but how am I to know when one octave starts and the other begins? If that's even right... Like, how do they even show that on a treble cleff stave as well? since I've learnt all the music notation for sheet music on the vertical. I'm not entirely sure where to go next. I'd rather read a book than watch a video, but I will do whatever. I'm trying to learn theory, though, and everything I find is just like uh "do this" or giving me tabs, which is annoying.
>>
>>128148139
they don’t unless the position you should be playing out of is notated, otherwise you’ll have to play the song yourself and just do whatever feels correct. you’ll know it’s a different octave when it’s extended off of the staff. I suppose that’s why the classical music scene glamorizes other people’s “expression” and “phrasing” so much because you can’t annotate that in sheet music
>how do I learn
it’s always going to be same 2-4 shapes just recognize the pattern. typically you can just learn all the major scale patterns and infer all the other scales from there since typically no more than half the notes change for any other scale. there are some really funky scales out there tho
>>
>>128148139
I'm too tired to explain, but ill give you this. Because of the nature of a 7 note scale, any time you play a "wrong note", move up or down one note, and you will be in key.
>>
>>128148251
great for improvisation isn’t going to do jack shit for him sight reading and doesn’t even address his question
>>
>>128148139

>>128148295
Well, that's because I didn't read his post.
>>
>>128148314
hopefully you die in your sleep
>>
>>128148210
So I just got to wing it, damn. That's a lot less methodical than I had hoped. I'll look more into major scale patterns. A video told me that there are pattern intervals I can learn for scales, e.g. a major scale is 221-2221, so if I play a G note and go down the string, follow the pattern, that's a G major scale. I'm starting to think that was incorrect/a red herring. Since when would I even need to know the "scale" for just one string.

Thanks for your response. I'll look into scale patterns a bit more and see if I can find a way to digest them more easily.

>>128148295
Lol thanks, I did think what he was saying didn't make sense. It's also something I had heard before.

>>128148297
How does that work? I want to know scales so I can eventually improv, memorising notes for a song I don't think would work for me.
>>
>>128146636

>>
I've been playing some other instruments for a while, all of them very related to the guitar, and my guitar technique has suffered, or guitar has a really shitty proper technique. Which is more likely?

Bad guitar technique is still bad, stabbing at the neck like a violin is where it gets questionable.
>>
>>128148399
I thought you were just asking about memorizing scales. I'm sorry friend. I should be more respectful and read the whole thing. I like writing chord charts and lyrics. I like improvising over a rough skeleton of theory. That is my way of writing music, it's efficient for me personally, but it leaves it quite open to interpretation. You can get to a point where you hear a recorded guitar and can literally see in your head how you would physically play it in real time. I hope that makes sense? If it doesn't it's ok too.
>>
>>128148399
playing scales on one string is more for getting used to the other positions of the fretboard which again comes back into the voicing and phrasing of the song. it’s technically the same note but modulating the pitch can give it a different feeling. sight reading is a great tool but most people want you to read sheet music so you can play it the way it’s written (ie no improv) although that’s not a hard and fast rule. I think it would be helpful to recognize the key of the song and the chord progression to see which chord fingerings make the most sense (typically easiest to play) and play out of whatever position that is or close to it. melodies and chord changes go hand in hand
>how to improvise
>>128147256
you can look up 100 different guides on improv and it will always lead back to this. you can get a lot of mileage out of improv just altering the melody and playing call and response motifs. just doing one go through of that is 4-12 bars or more typically.
>>

>>128148509
The plan was to print off a bunch of scales, like all the major, minor, pentatonix, and different modes or whatever that are common in the genre of music I'm interested in, in music notation format, stick them on my wall, then practice both my sight reading and memorising my scales at the same time. My main goal is to be able to improv in the genres that I'm interested in but also learn to sight read better at the same time. Given that there's no way to tell what octave you're in or whatever I guess it just means I can do the same thing I just need to learn how to play the scale on different parts of the fretboard. More work than I thought but I guess I'll just power through it, I'm a NEET for the next few months anyway.

Thanks again
>>
>>128148672
like the other guy said you play for a month or two you’ll visualize the pitch difference between different parts of the fretboard. scales confused me for a long time when I learned them because it was hard to make good music with them. don’t think of scales as a recipe you need to cook with but more like grammatical context that you are trying to speak through your guitar with. let me see if I can give an example:
Artist: yeah I usually just stick with Dorian over blues etc
YouTube retard: check out this Dorian trick that makes all your solos fire
What is actually going on: this scale feels a certain way to me when I hear it and I think the song needs a melody with that feeling. I know I can use something in the Dorian scale to evoke that feeling because that’s how that scale sounds to me. but you know what? I don’t like the way the song sounds if I have that feeling the whole time, it’s needs something else to create a story. I use this other scale to say something else when I finish what I’m saying in Dorian. maybe I only need to say one sentence with this feeling and I can go back to Dorian etc
sorry if that’s gay and confusing but it’ll make sense to you eventually.
>>
classic vibe players is that a good investment for me for right now or should I look at like firefly something cheaper ect. Like its just a strat its only going to be so and so much of a strat as much as a cheaper knockoff is that's probably why I don't wanna do it.

the only thing you get with more expensive electric guitars is that they feel better in the hand and stay in tune better. you can set virtually anything up to play well. if you see yourself being committed start with a guitar you like more, if you’re unsure maybe get the cheaper one. but if it sucks it will make you more likely to quit

Yep you see it similar to me. I really love music theory. It's like a warm blanket. A cool side note/tip: if you play a any two sequential notes, skip one, play the next two, repeat... You get an Arabic/Indian (to my ears) sounding scale. You can go to that any time to get that flavour. It's called the Octatonic scale, I think.

Happiness is a warm Gun - The Beatles
---------
They say it's about hard warm dicks, and it very well might be. But I think it's a metaphor. I think they are saying happiness/love is a weapon to those that don't have it. I think it's alluding to a moral responsibility to be humble. And not hold your good fortune over others heads. Just as one should not hold people hostage with their sorrow. And they combine this ethos, with a laid back r&b smooth jam. An example of excellent music. 6/10

About an artist that uses pain to inspire an, escape from mental anguish, and not being able to conform to a paradigm he didn't consent to, or understand. The whole band sound amazing in this recording. A classic. 4/10

wow… ii-V-I vs I-IV-(V)vi just clicked. I’m writing a crosspicking arrangement of a song I really like and I couldn’t figure out why it didn’t feel right. I really thought it was the latter because every other song in this artists catalogue and genre is a I-IV-V-iv

They say it's about wet hard throbbing cocks. And it very well might be. But I think it's a metaphor. Teasing the listener (and yes the sexual connotation is freely Implemented and heavily implied) with unfinished ideas and lines. An, imk blot of harmony. 7/10
>>
>>128149992
you don’t want glue on a nut, like two tiny drops of super glue
>>
>>128150083
not all nuts are cut the same, some have angled bottoms or just the way the guitar is designed can cause problems without guy but classical guitars historically don’t glue the nuts

Can someone please help me with this weird ringing noise coming from my acoustic after plucking a note? Its most prominent on the 8th fret of the g string. I've tried changing the strings, moving my picking position, reseating the strings, adding some relief in the neck and muting behind the saddles. Nothing works i'm going fucking insane

Some say it's about pulsing, rock hard, diamond meat shafts. But I think it's a metaphor. Her accent is very inviting. The beat is hip and grooves hard. The lyrics seem to be an internal monologue of a cool girl walking to a business meeting in a good mood. Really positive and uplifting. The guitar sounding hook is perfect for the song. Good example of a song for parties. 8/10

Was at the farmers market earlier. It's right by an open air gym by the beach. Sisters, I'm telling you. There was enough beef cake to feed an orphanage. After that went to gc and bought a Bruce Springsteen t-shirt. Currently practicing chromatically ascending six string diminished 7th arps. Feeling cute. Might post la8tr.
>>
>>
>>128150248
nut or saddle is probably cut incorrectly causing the string to contact it at two points and creating a buzz. try playing the note again but put your finger on the string behind the nut/saddle and see if it goes away. If it does you’ll need to sand down wherever it is
>>
>>128150410
I think your singing voice is good as well. It's good to normalize sharing music, I think. That's why I like the Grateful Dead. They have so much content that you find the random perfect live takes buried in their large discography. It's about the attempt and come what may, you are trying. And often you might even pull it off. I really like live recordings but also see the merit in meticulously assembled recordings. Each approach can sound better to you at certain times.

Hmm or I could put it more allegorically. Usually when I say something mean, I'm joking, and when it's something positive I am being literal. But I think most people are like that at the core. Same thing with music. Dissonance is a wink to the listener. Pure melody is serious business. Obviously style comes into play. Obviously in death metal scenarios dissonance is the core point. But still, I think the thought still holds up, even in heavier genres.

I played for 6 hours today. Some things I accomplished:
-Faster going back up a scale
-Improvisation on pentatonic scale
-Improved staring through the eyes of the dead by cannibal corpse on the section where you have to trill twice on fret 2 to 3 on the low E and improved my speed/accuracy when doing the flick off onto fret 3 to 2 to open on the A string before playing the 6th fret barre chord (note still rings out a bit and my index finger sometimes gets stuck when flicking off to the open A note, will work on that)
-Other miscellaneous stuff
Quite the day

I was about to sign a band to my label. My office is on the 30th floor. On the elevator ride up, I said to the guitarist to break your silence, "So... what kind of axe do you play?"
he snickered and shrugged, "just a squier..."
I hit the emergency stop button and the elevator halted with a screeching jolt. I slammed him against the wall of the elevator, hard. With an open hand I slapped him so hard that his ear started to bleed.I removed a ceiling tile and dragged him to the top of the elevator and we were in this giant elevator shaft with cables exactly like the movies. I pulled out a set of lollars from my suit pocket. Quietly, I said, "look, sorry I was rough on you in front of the guys. For now, pop these lollars into your squier. After you sign with me, your first purchase is gonna be a real Fender, capiche?" to drive the point home i took his right hand and broke 2 fingers, his pinky and his ring finger. Enough to prove that I was serious about what I expect of my artists but not enough to hinder his ability to play the instrument.

Wrong. It says right on their website. I didn’t say you can’t bend I said they’re shit for bends because it has to be on the cusp of being locked to stay in tune and then you have to break it out of the second locked stage into the third unlocked stage to get the note to bend. Unless you want to leave it in the third stage and just not have the locking feature at all.
>>
>>128155274
And by break out of the stage I mean bend the string hard enough to get it to unlock into the third stage not use tools or adjust the guitar. It’s a wacky system I have no interest in.
