Hi I want to start sampling in my songs but have questions about the legality of it that I can’t find clear answers to.
I’ve (regrettably) started listening to a tranny breakcore artist and he samples in lots of his songs. He has all of his albums on Bandcamp and only some on Spotify. In one of his older albums not on Spotify he samples from lots of huge artists (Nicki Minaj, the band Chicago, It Wasn’t Me by Shaggy, Missy Elliot etc). Assuming it’s not a personal decision because it’s an older album I take it this probably wouldn’t be allowed on Spotify because he hasn’t gotten permission to use the samples and they aren’t royalty free like the Amen Break? I haven’t listened to his newer stuff but despite that I think it still samples popular songs and artists. It definitely samples from indie and smaller artists, is that allowed or do you think he probably got permission? Is sampling anything and publishing without permission allowed on Bandcamp? What can I put up on Spotify when I get around to publishing my songs?

Does /prod/ have any recs for digital pianos?
I want a new portable digital. Willing to spend upwards of ~$2000 on something premium. Must have built-in speakers and a good keybed; will mainly be used for practice, but also public performances from time to time. I have a few ones I'm considering but want to know if anons have any opinions.

When I record a clip using FL studio and my guitar (through a Focusrite Scarlett), usually this noise comes up at the end of the the clip, even when I'm absolutely not playing. Like something cutting off?
How can I avoid this?

The Amen break isn't royalty free. They just won't sue you for using it (probably).

I got a Kawai CA65 maybe a decade ago now and I like it more than my upright acoustic. It's probably too bulky to be something that you would constantly be moving, like if you needed to take it to a venue for a performance -- if that's a big desire, you'll want to focus on stage pianos.
I'd recommend going to a store and playing a bunch of different brands firsthand to see what you like the most.

I wish I could, but no music stores in my area have more than 3 pianos to try. Although a music chain near me is opening a piano showroom "soon" so I'm hoping they'll have enough on the digital side so I can try each kind of action to decide what I prefer.
I'm not classically trained, I've been a (self-taught) pianist for a long time and now I want to take it more seriously.

I'm also going through the pain of figuring out recording guitar in FL with a Scarlett, and the only advice I could offer is make sure you are recording a clean DI (no effects, amp Sims etc. active on the mixer channel), be recording through input 2 and set your input levels/gain staging correctly.

This might be out of place here, but I haven't found a "sound designer thread" so I'll just ask here, but where do sound effects designers hang out at? Where could I lurk to find one to commission for a project?
>>
>>128229473
I think only the pro version can do that
>>
>>128229855
That doesn't sound like clean DI, though? Does this happen if you just record into a blank mixer channel as well? Start a new project with an empty template so you know there's nothing in it to interfere and just record the clean DI quickly into a random mixer channel. If you still have the problem, it's potentially an issue with your focusrite or the guitar itself. If not, it could be something in your project. Helps you narrow it down slightly at the very least.

>how do I make these better?
Start by asking yourself more specific questions. "Better" is somewhat subjective. What do you like about these? What do you dislike? How do these feelings compare to your feelings on music that inspires you? I think your best bet is to listen to more music with the intention of understanding why you like it.. and then make music that emulates that, until you start to get a feel for it all. Right now, these just don't sound very put together
>>
>>128229855
Are you sure you're not just.. touching something when you go to stop the recording?
>>
>>128231068
Haha, no. The recording automatically stops. Doesn't matter if I'm muting all the strings when the recording stops or not touching my guitar at all.
>>
>>128230904
Sounds great, anon. I really enjoy the mix, it's not super loud and the instruments are all very well defined and have their moments.
What settings are you using for the bass?
>>
>>128231297
Thank you. The bass is simply Direct Input from P/J pickups with all the bass's knobs maxed out and good gain staging. Read my graph paper notes, it's all about getting the tones at the very beginning so you don't have to "Fix" anything significant later on. All I did so far was adjust levels, it's not really mixed yet.
>>
>>128231354
No amp simp or anything?
Good job on getting those tones, then. I'm not good with this and every instrument simply sounds too loud.
>>
>>128231519
The guitars are going through Neural Amp Modeler so yes those are simulated. I adjusted those (rhythm and lead) for about 2 hours total and saved 12 or so "settings" I liked. One fake Peavey amp and one fake Mesa amp. I enjoy playing guitar way more than tinkering.
Once your """""amp""""" sounds good enough, hit record and your playing will do the rest.
>>
>>128231606

I was hoping to find some amateur at the beginning of his journey who didn't get on big projects yet, as a sort of shared opportunity to grow together. I'd feel better giving money to some 4channer than some random AAA guy. I found an artist on here that way at least, but I guess it's not gonna be as straightforward for sound effects since nobody does that as a hobby, and it's either full-time pros in the industry or people improvising out of necessity. It was dumb to ask now that I think about it, yeah.
>>
>>128233340
There are definitely sound designers here, but the chances of finding one that you’d want to work with just by posting randomly are pretty slim.
I hear there’s a general for devs here already- I would ask them to point you to whatever forums are popular.
I’m dimly aware that such places exist specific to engines that people use but that’s not really my area.

Dynamic BPM is when the DAW will let you change tempo during the song

Help me improve my mastering workflow for an album, specifically the part where I get everything up to the proper loudness with the proper headroom. Right now I am wasting a lot of time. At this point my mix is already good so I want to do things with a minimal impact on the sound.

Right now its:
>meter song's loudness (in real-time since I have a free loudness meter)
>loudness too low / true peaks too high, so I turn down a limiter by a dB or so or adjust compression
>export track (takes a few minutes)
>meter again (again in realtime)
>didn't meet target, so repeat until good (3-5 times per song)

I am using FL and dpMeter, I am open to changing my meter if there's a better free one. I know Youlean Loudness Meter's pro version can go faster than real-time, but it needs a file for that so there is still the export stage. I could try to cut the export stage and meter directly in the song's project file, but I have found sometimes the loudness in the DAW and after exporting does not match and I don't know why.

If you have a better workflow, tell me, what do you do?
>>
>>128239224
this should go without saying, but you’re working on the exported track and not on anything that’s un-bounced and prone to variability, right?

personally i consider anything that’s too quiet or anything to do with peaks to be part of the mixing stage.
anything beyond adjusting absolute final loudness via gain (saturation/limiter- no automation) and very minimal eq to bring everting slightly more in line wouldn’t be mastering
>>
>>128239444
>this should go without saying, but you’re working on the exported track and not on anything that’s un-bounced and prone to variability, right?
I am but only because I noticed a discrepancy sometimes, I wasn't aware the sound could vary much.

>>128239444
>anything beyond adjusting absolute final loudness via gain (saturation/limiter- no automation) and very minimal eq to bring everting slightly more in line wouldn’t be mastering
That's pretty much what I am doing at this stage, just include adjusting master compression somewhat as well. I am dealing with small discrepancies at this point and making small changes, something like a track being 0.8 LU too quiet while having true peaks 0.6 dB above target. All stuff that could be handled in the final limiter. I think I could maybe improve things by removing the final limiter in the DAW, export, and do all the limiting as a separate stage? It would cut down on repeated exports.
>>
>>128239630
i mean yeah if that’s what you’re doing just bounce out and do every little gain tweak manually.
i just do it within the audio clip and fade ableton.
no automation lanes or anything like that.

https://voca.ro/1kKnXcsaLHnb
>>
>>128243223
I'm not sure what you want out of it, but so far it seems acceptable enough to cary on. My advice would be to finish an idea first before properly mixing it. It's always tempting to get caught up trying to nail the final sound first so you can record the other parts with that peace of mind of everything sounding 'good', but I feel it's more important to record more fleshed out (or complete, ideally) ideas, so you can mix within the context of the full track. I'm fairly new as well, but this is something I have learned the hard way and still struggle to do at the moment, but I feel like it helps my worklflow to get as many parts down first before getting overwhelmed with mixing the first 20 seconds or something. This includes getting down some basic drums and bass (and whatever else you want) down as quick as possible to mix a well, even if they are just basic and placeholder, you can go back and finalise them later once the idea starts taking more shape.

TLDR; sounds fine, make a song first.
