novice here...learning basic hard rock/metal solos and shit and my question is this:

How would you guys personally pick something like this? The way it's tabbed goes against my instincts (I prefer hitting the notes on the b string with an upstroke) but I don't wanna develop a "bad" habit that may be annoying to unlearn in the future
>>
>>128822939
I would do the opposite of that personally. Down on E string, up on B string.
Picking patterns won't really give you "bad habits" as long as you're picking correctly; you just go with whatever is easiest/fastest for you at the end of the day.
>>
>>128822939
learn it both ways and hybrid picked
>>
>>128822939
Downstrokes only like a true chad
>>
>>128822939
This is the same pattern that Marty Friedman plays at an iconic point in the "Tornado of Souls" solo. From watching and slowing down somewhat rare live footage of him I came to the conclusion that he plays this kind of each 4-note group of 16th notes in sequence like this:

Up Pull Down Down
Up Pull Up Pull
Down Down Up Pull
Up Pull Down Down

That's still too hard for me so I just tap it. And other times I play those kinds of patterns I personally prefer inside picking the string changes (up pick on the B string, down pick on the E string) but I think I'm a bit of a statistical outlier in that regard.

I haven't seen a need for a booster, but ymmv. Just that reverb. And it's actually decent for many people. Enough to give some dimension and space to leads and such. It's just not the surfy soaked oldschool Fender reverb. Or even like a Deluxe's reverb (apparently it's similar circuitry, but the Deluxe might have a bigger tank).

Relic from the Custom Shop. I don’t like relics but this was less than two hours away and was a reissue of the exact year of my favorite year of Tele with my favorite finish and after driving down to check it out in person it felt and played great, and it being a near perfect example of my favorite era of Tele I can look past the relic job. I’d prefer if it wasn’t relic’d but at least it isn’t relic’d more than it already is

Honestly I couldn’t ask for a “better” relic. I never thought I’d ever buy one. Again in a perfect world it’d be a NOS or Closet Classic this just felt like the stars were aligning for it because it was so close being my exact favorite Tele year

They don’t, I just like that year of Telecaster. Late 1966 though 1968 were weird years where CBS was wrapping up changes to the Tele and they’ve just got features that are unique from those years. It doesn’t mean anything important, I just think it’s a cool era

I assume you've posted here long enough to know how people are liable to respond to a comment like that so I'll take that as an invitation to share another story.
I used to hang around a coffee shop on McDowell road. One night my brother introduced me to this chick with huge tits like so: "Hey (me), this is (her). She has huge tits." She giggled and stuck out her chest and replied "True, and true!" I brought my guitar for open mic that night and played some Collective Soul and Nirvana for people. It was more of an indie crowd and I knew this so I tried to make up for it with my better than average coordination. Anyway she invited me to over to her house because she wanted to start a band. I get there, and there's no one else. She said the other folks would be by later so in the mean time I could just show her how to play some stuff. So I played some of the easier riffs I knew for her and tried to get her to play them herself but she kept wanting to bullshit with me instead of actually play. I got annoyed with her lack of discipline and impatient for those other people to show up. After an hour of this horseshit I started to believe no one was going to show up so I made motions like I was going to leave and she convinced me to stay by making me some macaroni and cheese. While we were eating the mac and cheese her mom came home. I had a nice conversation with her and then I went home. Later when my brother asked me how things went I told him and he couldn't stop laughing.

What's the deal with tone goblets? You people hear about this? Some guy from the bar invites you to jam and you walk into his studio, he has a brass goblet filled with Dunlop lemon oil, crumpled Zeppelin liner notes, and rusty strings from his first bass. I know musicians are weird, but wouldn't practicing help tone in a more direct way? You think it's a mixed drink and you go to take a sip and Robert Plant is giving you a peace sign. Whats next, Tone flying buttresses? They tried to tell us tone wood was a slippery slope, but we didn't believe it!

AC/DC is my prime example. Both Angus and Malcolm were minimalists in their approach, though Angus's wireless kit did act as a boost, which is okay because that's just overdrive which is allowed
>>
Tremolo came with most of the first amps though.
>>
>>128826501
i like it. Add a rat pedal, some reverb, and chorus. You can get some psychedelic tones. Adjust the depth knob until the cutoff isn't as abrupt if you want a more usable sound. A slow tremolo with reverb can makes an oozing pulsing sound. Any effect no matter the "quality" can sound cool with enough creativity.

Does the tremolo arm sit too high above the pick guard on your guitars? Is there a way to adjust its height? I was looking at a Jazzmaster last week and the tremolo arm was too high off of the pick guard for me, it was about four inches, and in order to use it I had to reach farther out from the body of the guitar than I’d like.

The arm height will move depending on how the trem spring is dialed in which can be adjusted with this screw here. I find I like it fairly loose (which causes the arm to sit rather high) to get a wider range when using the trem.

Maybe I just have good luck with getting and setting up good offsets but I don’t have any of the issues commonly associated with them like the string holes cutting strings on the trem, never had an issue with the stock rocking bridges on Jags/JMs, or action/string height issues. 99% of the common problems are easy fixes like using a shim in the neck to create an adequate break angle to the bridge while keeping the action nice and low. Use good shims and do a good job adding them and I haven’t noticed any loss of sustain or resonance.

12-16-2025: Nylon acoustic improv

The sun shines almost horizontally from the south, casting long shadows that cut the line between shade and blinding light. And the Blue sky is visible above the wispy clouds. And the bones and corpses from time lost to the past freeze and thaw, and are encapsulated within stone and mud. And ground into dust as they emerge from the earth after eons, and erode to the wind and snow... And the trees have no leaves. And the birds no worms...

How can I make a shitty $200 guitar sound good for drone metal?
>>
>>128830384
I was planning on getting it but wound up getting the Progress DAD250+ and JHS Kilt 10 in the meantime and those are definite keepers so I’ll probably skip the Badder Monkey. It looks promising but between the two I mentioned above and the BBE Green Screamer I have overdrive covered and then some. I did fall for the big box Muff 2 because I don’t have an OG style or Op Amp muff and because the big version looks awesome. Some people have gain stages, I have Muff stages and the M2 will be going on the board in front of my Tone Wicker and Deluxe Muffs.

Upgrade components on the guitar, learn to set it up as best possible, play it through a tube amp, use lots of pedals? There’s plenty of options, last but not least, be a very good guitar player and you can make a $200 plank sing
>>
>>128830557
>drone metal?
Is just about amps, pedals and loudness.
>>
>>128830557
Get a nice humbucker. Make sure your set up (mostly fretjob) is on point so your strings ring out like a king. If you want to tune down use baritone strings and file your nut accordingly, that's all you can do tbqh. I recently saw Earth live and Dylan was playing some cheap ass Ibanez starter pack guitar. You don't really need much

I have a project in mind, I’ve been thinking about building a 25.5” scale Mustang with 3 P90s and a dynamic tremolo (Jag/JM trem). I love my triple P90 Noventa JM and I also have a Mustang 90 with two P90s but they don’t sound as good as the JM P90s. The two from scratch guitar projects I plan to tackle are full scale offsets, a Mustang and a Jag but I need to math it out and have my plans reviewed before I start ordering components.

Yeah because they were a flop. When they were introduced in 1962 they were absurdly expensive at around $375, by comparison a Jazzmaster was only around $350 and a Strat was only around $250. They were a flop because people didn’t want to pay the money for them, and then only a few years after being released the Strat became the symbol of rock and roll and sales for it soared above every other Fender guitar. They were cheap in the 1980s and 1990s because they had been discontinued since 1975 and nobody wanted them in the world of Strats and especially Super Strats.
>>
>>128833622
Tom Verlaine is the like the granddaddy of offset adopters.. and he got em because they were cheap, but he loved the necks. He loved Strats too, but the necks were the same for JM. And other people got wise to it after him.
In his old age, he still played his old JM neck, but on a Strat body with lipstick pups.
>>
Vol/Vol/Tone is supreme my dude
>>
>>128833622

That makes sense considering all the extra stuff they have, it's just that none of that stuff is particularly useful for rock

I got started when I was 13 or 14 with a Fender acoustic that came with an instructional DVD. This was back when youtube channels like JustinGuitar (who is great, check him out) were just getting started and I didn’t have the internet bandwidth to stream youtube well anyway. Don’t get stuck looking for the perfect approach or perfect video series…find something that looks good to you and practice every day. Guitar and music theory are a bunch of little pieces that all fit together and learning all that is not linear. Online like justinguitar works well but consider an irl teacher too if you can afford it, just make sure you get a good one who has some credentials or plays in a jazz band or something, guitar is an instrument that is easy to play in shapes without understanding how music works so there are a lot of hack teachers out there.
