Newb from the last thread. Thanks to the anon who recommended me Troy Grady's cracking the code. Turns out what I was doing was called stringhopping when I should be alternate picking. I knew it felt wrong, but I didnt know why.

How much of a pain is it do sell guitars on Reverb and deal with shipping? I’m thinking about selling some guitars and have only ever done so locally but I live in a small town and locally takes ages. I’ve never sold on Reverb or shipped a guitar before, but there’s a guy in town with a Reverb shop who said he’ll pack up and ship my guitars after I sell them myself for $40 plus whatever the shipping cost is (how do you even get guitar sized boxes without constantly buying guitars?) or he will sell them on his on Reverb shop for a 20% consignment fee. Is it worth dealing with all of Reverb’s fees myself and all of the idiot buyers who complain about every single thing when I can just let someone else who already knows what he’s doing handle it for the price of a fifth of the sale?
>>
>>129071052
between reverbs pound of flesh, dealing with retarded redditors seething over micro scratches, packing/shipping and having to fill out a 1099 its not worth the hassle
>>
>>129071070
>retarded redditors seething over micro scratches
This is honestly what I’m most concerned about. “What do you mean I bought a 30 year old used guitar that *gasps* shows signs of a used 30 year old guitar???” All kinds of stories from people who take extremely detailed pictures of their gear and the buyer still finds something to complain about for a discount after buying or just to return it. That would piss me off to no end having to deal with those kinds of fags.

no, plenty of guitarists make one chord shape and slide it around the neck, the key is if you play each individual note of that shape, or just strum away

These strings are great, they sound so much better than EB or Dildarios. $30 for 3 custom sets and free shipping and that’s just crazy. I tried 11-50 first but 50 was just a bit too much tension on my Jazzmaster that I have been using power slinky’s on. The poop green JM, it’s resonant as fuck unplugged but with these it’s downright loud unplugged now and sounds twice as good when amplified. 10/10 highly recommend.

That’s a great era for MIM Strats. No joke, I wouldn’t trade my 2004 for any of the current Fender Strats regardless of origin. The neck on my 2004 MIM actually feels like a Strat neck, has a 6 screw trem, and decent pickups. It could use some TLC though, I need to do some maintenance on the pickup selector.

Ive been selling on reverb/ebay for the last almost 10 years. Youre more likely to deal with UPS just straight up destroying your package or losing it than you are reddit fags bitching about swirls and scratches. Even if UPS DOES destroy/lose it, that what the seller protections and insurance is for. UPS will bitch and claim that they will only cover $100, thats a straight up lie, between them, paypal and reverbs own protection, youll get your payday, as will the buyer. Needless to say, we do our best to NOT use UPS whenever possible these days.

lol perhaps. he can probably charge whatever he wants desu, not a lot of people doing this work I imagine. I’m glad I no longer work in third party repair; customers are weird in that they will think you do poor quality work if you don’t charge them a lot.
>>
>>129075693
yeah, it really is a dying art. My amp tech was $120/h with a 10 week minimum wait (he was the only guy in town and also had the experience to back up the price) so I learned how to do it myself and make decent money on the side charging $80/h
>>
>>129075731
nice. did you work on solid state? I can kind of understand tube amps but I don’t think I could diagnose mosfets and microchips
>>
>>129075757
yes, that's where most of my work comes from (since no amp tech wants to touch solid state stuff). Most of it is signal tracing and replacing bad components, and SMD soldering isn't that hard
>>
Recently got a Squire Strat at a pawn shop for $80. Haven't played for 6 years or so, good to get back into it. Surprised how much I remembered. Also surprised how nice Strats are, I had a couple of Epiphones back in the day.

I want to build a partscaster now, think it would be a fun project and cheap way to get a guitar that feels nicer than this Squire and has the tones I want.

XGP has some cheap bodies, like $100 and they look ok, I've seen some on eBay for around 120 that look great too. Obviously all Chinese, but I read good things about them Anyone have any experience with Chinese or XGP bodies. Just want a simple alder sunburst.

Also Chinese necks form eBay, seems like it's just luck. Might get a nice one, or might have some imperfections. Most of what i read suggests they're actually pretty good, especially for under $100. I know I'll need to do some fretwork, im ok with that. Any idea where I can get Chinese necks with a Fender logo? I like the logo.
>>
>>129076027
if you just get the cheapest warmoth it should only be like $250 each and the quality will be miles better
>>
>>129075216
What makes it improper? Just more room for error?
>>
>>129076027
you can get a Fender waterslide decal off of Etsy or Ebay and apply it to the headstock of your chinese neck
>>
>>129074605
Based. Probably a Boogie nigga.
>>
>>129076027

You can find fender or warmoth or other maker bodies on reverb. If you want cheap Chinese bodies check eBay, you can get a thin line Stratocaster body for 120 but good chance you can haggle down to 100 via offer. The Chinese necks are surprisingly good for the price, one thing is sometimes the side dots are off but that's not a deal breaker for most the fretwork is pretty good better than squier.

Honestly the logo is whatever but you can find waterslide logos online if that's your thing

proper technique is the best blend of tone, accuracy, speed, and healthy posture but it’s also a very old concept and isn’t always the best way to play modern music. Jim Croce did a lot of barring with just his ring finger because he was he was playing the same thing but up a perfect fourth. I can’t for the life of me remember what that’s called. 3:30

I looked there, the bodies are 500 finished. Necks are 350 finished. Not looking to pay 750 before the electronics. I've read that some of the Chinese necks are great quality, especially for the price, which isn't hard to believe with modern CNC and smaller scale production. I guess it just depends how the kids are feeling in the sweat shop that day. I know it won't be Fender USA quality, but its a fraction of the price. I just don't see the logic in paying close to Fender USA price for a partscaster project.

>>129076309

You can just by the waterslide decal and then put laquer finish over it.

It's brain dead simple, you can even have custom ones made with like your name or a nickname for your guitar.

It's not cheap at all and it's probably going to play way worse than a production line model unless you have a ton of experience with building/modding guitars. On your first time, you also have to factor in all the guitar building/setup/servicing tools.

Example video here, you could lower the nominal price in places but it's still a ton of time and effort for something you can't really resell to recoup your cost. Cheap parts tend to be absolute crap and you have to spend money on decently made parts to not have a bad experience. Inexpensive kits are trying to polish a turd into gold while more expensive parts are about not fucking up

>>
so if I get good, /gg/ will just insult me and ask for my birth certificate? whats the purpose of this general?
>>
>>129081258
I'm not getting a hollow body with binding. I have zero experience with building and modding guitars, but a fair amount of experience with electronics, and woodwork so I'm not worried about that at all, it looks trivial. My cost breakdown is as follows:

60-80 for the neck. (Chinese eBay neck, as I said, it can be luck of the draw, but from what I've read they're generally very good quality, sometimes with minor imperfections. My strat has some pretty big ones.)

Probably another $50-$60 for fret / neck tools, but thats ok.

120ish for the body, its just a strat sunburst. Again, I'll probably go with an eBay body as I've heard better things than XGP.

Probably around $30 for misc stuff, hardware, backplate, pickguard etc

As far as the electronics, tuners, trem, that's where I'd invest actual money as those parts hold there value more and can be moved into other guitars. Even if I got a production strat, I would probably change the pickups.

So to me $230 sounds pretty cheap, I don't think I'm missing anything in terms of skills needed, and if the neck or body turn out to be absolutely shit (which seems pretty unlikely), I'm not out by that much.
>>
>>129081473

It's your time and money. I would recommend hot rodding an already built guitar so you can learn to do fret dressing, rolling the fretboard edges, and practice fret jobs on a cheap neck.

You're not going to beat the system with a partscaster from the cheapest parts and tools you can find. You should be ordering multiple of each part just to ensure you get something decent. I've read about necks with broken or no truss rod, on top of necks being twisted or just shit.

For tools, you probably will spend more than that because that sounds like the cheapest things you could find on alibaba. If you're willing to cut so many corners for "cheapness" I doubt your ability to judge quality playing or craftsmanship in the guitars themselves. Partscaster guys always seem to be addicted to gambling and tinkering instead of playing guitar
>>
>>129081417
It's really one of the worst generals since forever. But like 4chinz and addictive gambling psychology in general it's the random occasional gem that makes you keep going back.
About 5 years back it had very useful links with schematic diagrams, pdf of lesson books, scanned charts of bar band standards. Of course randomly there are good players that come along. I remember the Lenny Breau kid on a strat hes breddy gud.
