https://youtu.be/6rJueaXKqeU?si=D_KspvDgsVQB44XMFender Costume Shop vs Squier Jurassic Vibe. Let's go.
>>129281090>hanging guitar stand It's gonna fail
>custom shop frets arent manually leveled or polishedthere's no way that can be right
>>129281204Plek does a better than any luthier can
>>129281204I've never played a custom shop that felt better than a high end guitar worked on by a good tech. They all need finishing out of the factory
>>129281224t. someone who has never worked with tools or machinery in her life
Jammed for about an hour before work
luthiers can use pleks, its not either or
>>129281250Plek scientifically calculates the best height for each fret to give the lowest possible action and cuts the frets to within .0005” accuracy and crowns the frets to perfection. a tech uses a flat sanding beam/block, hopes for the best, and crowns the frets as best as his eyes can see and the $15 tool he bought on alibaba and is worn out from 100 dressings will allow. Cope
>>129281271Lol you proved his point, no idea what you’re talking about
>>129281263luthier is not likely using a plek. it’s a $100k machine bare minimum so if you invest in one you’re going to be doing so many guitarist that you will hire a dedicated plek operator
>>129281288did you have an argument?
How do I break out of the pentatonic/major scale noodling and do proper shredding
>strat b and e strings buzzed yesterday>today it plays finewhat the fuck?
yeah I didn’t think so
>>129281271And this is why I do it myself and use quality files. My Jap and Mexican guitars play nicer than most people’s high end MIA guitars. As long as there’s no major flaws from the factory, I can set any guitar up into a very decent-very hood guitar. It’s a skill worth learning if you play a lot, own a lot of guitars, or are picky about how your guitars play.
>>129281320noodling is lack of intention. you're too relaxed, you're not using your brain. when you're starting out, improvising is not relaxing. you're activating new pathways in your brain and that is naturally uncomfy. if you want to stop noodling, you have to allow yourself to be uncomfy and keep tryharding instead of letting yourself relax
>>129281271Retardsis, a tech still has to verify and finish the work a plek has done. And you've proven my point, you have never worked with precision machining and it shows. Scientifically zero my foot in your ass
>>129281340>My Jap and Mexican guitars play nicer than most people’s high end MIA guitars. And how many MIAs do you have?
>>129281347wow he looked at it. that’s fucking crazy it’s as if the tech did all the work after all
>>129281353s-shut up
>>129281340dude even those chinese artist and harley benton guitars are good now, as long as there are no obvious problems they can be setup and play better for 1/10th of the price
>>129281022You take that back
>>129281347A fret polish? A plek machine has straps that can adjust the relief of the guitar while it’s in the cradle. You punch a few stats in like scale length and the machine measures the physical space of the guitar with a probe and then cuts and crowns everything. It can also cut nuts and shape fingerboards if you really wanted. The machine throws tons of faults if something isn’t correct. It’s nothing like freehanding a mill or a lathe, moron.
>And you've proven my point, you have never worked with precision machining and it shows.
>>129281383I know how a plek works, it's not automatic. You're just at much at the mercy of whoever is operating the machine knowing what they're doing. A plek setup can fuck up a guitar just as much as improve it.And then you still need the polishing, action, and intonation set after it's all done
>um i can’t actually explain why but you must certainly be wrong
>>129281443hey retard, we were talking about fret leveling. maybe in your dumb little brownoid head you got emotionally invested in your own head canon and lost the plot. but feel free to take a break, brush up on your reading, and then come back and make yourself look retarded in a completely new way
>If you do a bad job, it will suck.Woah, got him with that one.

>>129281541well now its worth fucking nothing because nobody knows where it is
>>129281553keyvon from fedex is enjoying his new $7k guitar
>>129281461And the operator has to make judgement calls every step of the way with the virtual fret dressing and what to prioritize. Plek is not magic, it's another tool that can be used by a skilled individual

>>129283019personally I find a dreadnought very comfortable. if you plan to play fingerstyle I’d probably get a smaller guitar like a concert (x12 x22) or auditorium (x14 x24) since they typically use lighter gauge strings. easier to get reasonable volume out of lighter strings without a pick
>>129283052alternatively you could put lighter strings on a dreadnought but they have beefier bracing so the top won’t be as active as a guitar that was designed for lighter gauge strings so they won’t have volume parity. I put 12s on all my dreadnoughts just because hearing my guitar creak every time I tune it scares the shit out of me
>>129283052>fingerstyleProbably notThe 314ce is what I'm really interested in just gotta try it out

Anyone know anything about Jazzmasters and Jaguars? Still pretty new to guitar but thinking of getting myself one, just can’t decide which. Love the look of offset guitars but most of the comparison videos online suck.
>>129283313I want to know this too.
>>129283313short scale length typically equates to warmer sound, easier finger stretching for more chord voicings. pickup closer to the 12th fret is also warmer, pickup closer to the bridge is more lower mids, a bit of higher mids, kind of sounds compressed also. idk shit about the tone circuits and switches since I play bass but I’m sure someone will chime in
>>129283313The Jaguar produces a much different sound than the Jazzmaster due to the pickups being very different. You can pretty much ignore all the different knobs and options on the Jag though, they were a pretty standard gimmick of 1960s guitars and were found on Japanese brands too like Teisco. They don't really do much, they're mostly ornamental.
>>129283313this is bait
>>129282994i can but i dont want to right now
>>129283313Both of them have 1M pots instead of your standard 250K, this makes the neck pickup ultra clear but the bridge can be pretty harsh. Jag also has a bass cut witch but you dont use it much.
>>129283313go to a store and try them and pick the one you want. comparison videos online are better than any gibberish some /gg/tard will throw at you. talking about an instrument is like dancing about architecture

>>129283744That's the logical conclusion from it.If needed, I get my gain through pedals (and a pedal-in-the-box or two) and then into a mic pre/eq, then XLR into my interface. This instantly gets me closer to a finished sound than messing around with micing my tube amp and I can do it any hour of the day. Cab sims are basically just filters at the end of the day, and you don't have to try getting rid of the shitty amp sim fizz with this method.Mic pres and guitar pres with DI out were underlooked for a while until digital finally started getting us out of it. 6 or 700 for the toneking imperial is too much but it's in the right direction. The only thing you miss out on with this is feedback and sag, but some amp pedals do emulate sag (it's never that noticeable to a listener unless it's practically unplayable for a player)

>>129281320ask yourself what that "proper shredding" actually is, you seem to have some conception of it which means you've probably heard it somewhere before. first port of call is to track it down and try your best to learn it or something approximating it, then begin to understand the tonality, technique and intended use of what was being played, ie why is it in the song and its contribution. more than that, you need better fretboard visualisation, it sounds like you're stuck in pentatonic because you're unfamiliar with other modes, so track those down and learn those too. you need to be able to play any scale in any key in any position of the fingerboard without thinking about it. go learn the greek names and the shapes, starting with aeolian which is commonly called minor, ionian being the relative major. in between those are locrian, dorian, phrygian, lydian and mixolydian, learn them all, and learn harmonic minor and phrygian dominant, then learn diminished and augmented scales, then learn wholetone, melodic minor and others. yes it's a lot of work, don't expect to be done with it in a day, a week, a month or perhaps even a year unless you're really dedicated, the sooner you begin to expand your fretboard visualisation and memorisation of scale shapes and modes the sooner you can begin to expand your repertoire, but just getting down a few licks right now this instant will go some ways to helping you break out of pentatonic boxes.

I decided to get the Schecter Nick Johnston signature in HSS. I'm sweating like crazy, because I'm expecting it to have major flaws like uneven frets.>>129278733>>129278721This one doesn't even have stainless steel frets. The Yamaha one I was looking at had them, but I read more negative reviews about its QC.>You should be getting your guitar setup after buying it anyway. Is fret-leveling part of a setup? I thought that a standard setup consists of neck-relief, string action, intonation adjustments? I do those myself, but fret-leveling sounds like a major thing to do.I can already see it, in a month or so I'll have fret-leveling equipment at home that I will never use again in my life. What's also worrying me, if I get a guitar with stainless steel frets, I will probably need special equipment which can handle the hardness of steel.
>>129287544You should at least check if it needs fret adjustments. You may not need to do anything.
>>129281090That guy swears too much. It comes off as edgy and try-hard. I agree with his opinions though and I enjoy watching him work on guitars and probably trying it myself.Did anyone watch the video where they compared a PLEK-machine setup to one of his? Somehow I trust machines more than people. Do you think he's worried that that side of guitar-building will be replaced by machines?
>>129287544If you tell the tech you want the frets levelled because it just came out of the factory that can be part of your setup. A setup is literally anything you need to do to your guitar to make it more playable.

>>129287554I do, I use the string height gauge from Music Nomad as a fret rocker. It's the most gut wrenching moment when trying a new guitar.Interestingly: Music Nomad sells a separate fret rocker. They claim that it gets special attention to make it a true "straight edge". Apparently the string action gauge isn't fit for that. I think they just want to sell me another gadget, but the paranoid side of me is worried. >>129287626There is only 1 guitar tech/guitar store in my town. I read a review where someone took theirs to get set-up and they were told that they "don't work on American guitars". Not sure what to think of that.

>>129287576His vid with andertons is the one that introduced me to his channel. I think the difference on why Lee preferred his human set up vs the plek machine one was his was a smidge lower. The plek operator of andertons assumed lee wanted his a bit higher being a blues dad. PLEK machine is just a tool, it's just that it can be more consistent and precise than a human doing it with hand tools. It's still up to the operator and how he can capture the end user's preference - there was a podcast where John Suhr said Scott Henderson likes his nut height cut higher than what he would normally set up.

if you interpret "the pentatonic scale" in modal terms, we need names for these modes. for example pentatonic phrygian, the chinese would call man-gong scale. pentatonic mixolydian is the japanese "yo scale"

>>129288163It gets confusing because there are multiple pentatonics that work well over a given chord for expressing the modal flavor. You could take your regular minor pentatonic and raise the b3 to a natural 3 for one flavor over a dominant chord of the same root. You could also play the minor pentatonic with the natural 6 replacing the b7 from the 5th of the dominant chord, or more accurately, play 1 2 3 5 b7 from the root of the dominant chord, for example.Here's what I've got kinda sorta worked out:>Ionian Pentatonic1 3 4 5 7>Dorian or m6 Pentatonic1 3 4 5 6>Phrygian Pentatonic1 b2 4 5 b7>Lydian Pentatonic1 3 #4 5 7>Mixolydian or Dominant Pentatonic1 3 4 5 b7>Aeolian Pentatonic / Hirajoshi1 2 b3 5 b6>Locrian Pentatonic1 b3 4 b5 b7>mM7 Pentatonic (Minor-Major 7 Pentatonic)1 b3 4 5 7>Diminished Pentatonic1 b3 4 b5 bb7>Augmented Pentatonic1 3 4 #5 7>Mode 4 Harmonic Minor Pentatonic1 b3 #4 5 b7idk what else, maybe >Lydian Augmented Pentatonic1 3 #4 #5 7>Lydian Dominant Pentatonic1 3 #4 5 b7
>>129288506shit that Dorian one is supposed to be1 b3 4 5 6
>>129288506I see where you are going with this but what I'm referring to is something more simplistic. I'm simply giving different interval emphasis unique names in the pentatonic scale we all know and love. like for instance you take diatonic aeolian mode and remove the locrian and lydian interval you get "the minor pentatonic scale"now if you take diatonic Phrygian and remove the same locrian and lydian interval, I need a name for that mode. so I'll call it "pentatonic Phrygian" (1 b3 4 b6 7)

>>129288666okay thanks satan. my friend also got a guitar and were planning on taking lessons. is guitar center okay for lessons or should i look for a teacher outside of that?
>>129288681I’m afraid to say because my experience with GC lessons was not good. Just because people know something does not mean they are good teaching, and many people can lie about their credentials, saying that they are equipped to teach certain genres when it’s really just them assuming they can because they know a few songs technically. You really won’t know until you take a few lessons, but it would probably help to settle on a clearly defined goal first that you can convey to your instructor.
>>129288723i just want to make my picking feel more natural and improve my ability to make chords and move across the fretboard. id also like to be better at palm muting. im only a month in so idk if its even productive to think about what genres id like to play, but i think stoner doom may be a good beginner genre. slam too
>>129288757I think technique is one of the easier things to teach so if you pick a teacher that is clearly good at those things you’ll be okay.

>>129289200allegedly some 0000 steel wool on the back of a glossy poly neck will give you a satin feel.
Don't use steel wool unless you remove the neck. A green Scotchbrite pad does the same thing without shedding metal everywhere.

>>129282243Retard detected
>>129289381that may happen when using wool on the frets, but you usually have it face down when working on the back of the neck. if any wool somehow got there you just take some compressed air and blow it off.
>>129289253I don't use signature models of people who suck at guitar
>>129289416playing with someone else is like practicing on steroids. set a drum track and if you make mistakes don’t stop keep going. you don’t always have to practice a song you can just make stuff up
Good thing J can play great. I will say I don't care for the screaming distortion in some songs.
>>129289381i used steel wool to remove a little bump in the finish that had built up where my thumb rests on the neck - this did not happen because i did not have the pickups below the neck, I tilted the guitar and the wool just fell to the ground
>>129289584the most important part is that you need to get used to playing to an audience, even if it's one other guy that is also playing with you. if all you do is practice at home, suddenly you forget how to play guitar when there is an audience

>>129290681No.
I don't understand what flat vs quarter sawn is supposed to do for the guitars playability
>>129290767wood changes size and flexes with humidity and temperature changes. wood is stronger or weaker depending on how the grain is oriented in relation to the stress that is placed on it. for a neck where the strings are trying to turn it into a bow, quarter sawn provides the best resistance to that. the grain is almost completely unlikely to warp or twist also as the grain will move in the same direction and in a way that is in line with the tension of the strings. flat sawn is great for bracing on acoustic guitarist and the top is quarter sawn.
>>129289559fair, but the guitar itself is pretty good still.
>>129290817>>129290767The flat sawn gives you deeper EQ response, sometimes muddy if the wood grew up in a rainy climate. The long grain is great for long sustain. Ideal for jazz. The rift sawn one is focused on the mids and highs, doesn't really reach the bass (unless you cut it from basswood). The short grains don't allow for long sustain. Ideal for alternative music types, where the low end is provided by other instruments.Quartersawn wood gives you fairly equal, flat EQ, ideal for pop music.

>>129290895I work for PRS by the way.
>>129290767Nothing. It's a nice to have but tends to make things more expensive. Manufacturers get more cuts out of flat sewn than quarter sewn.Guitar necks went from having no truss rod, to a metal bar, to adjustable truss rods, to dual action, and now carbon fiber enforced truss rods. A good neck is a good neck, you can have quarter sawn necks that are just absolute shit. For similar price, I'd lean toward quarter sawn but it's not make or break.Nowadays made in Indonesia/Korea guitars are kicking people's asses by making those standard features on cheaper guitars, same with rolled fretboards. No need to pay an MIA tax on things that should be standard instead of pure profit/paying for the label
