Are rosewood necks worth it? What is their tone signature? I know a Beatle was well known for playing a rw tele.

It's purely aesthetic, like virtually everything else on an electric guitar

>Plek scientifically calculates the best height for each fret to give the lowest possible action and cuts the frets to within .0005” accuracy
Absolutely hilarious.

Great comment on the Rhett Shull video
>There is no possibility that PLEK tolerance is .001mm / .0004" and simply if no other reason, but there are other reasons, it does not have a heavy framework to eliminate distortion caused by machine vibration, and further, the guitar is mounted on a swinging door, on hinges no less. The standard tolerance for heavy rigid CNC is .001", and you are claiming that this light weight aluminum tubing frame that is not even welded, can do .0004" NO. Add to this the maintenance issues and user error. PLEK is a decent machine, and when perfectly maintained and operated it can deliver tolerances that approach .001" but everything would have to perfect for that to happen. The acid test is simple for anyone who wishes to argue... use a digital gauge to measure PLEKed frets left center and right of every fret... you will actually be shocked at how wide the tolerances are in 90% of the cases.

Plek is basically a 3-axis grinder. You don't have the runout and deflection you would get from using a machine like a mill, and I also don't know why you would measure the frets with a caliper considering 1) their accuracy is low and 2) the frets are not cut symmetrically by design. Anyway, gay argument both sides. We can all stop now.
>>
>>129291539
But it's still more precise than a human could do. I think that's the point.

>>
>>129291785
It's not. With a beam, you will level the frets to the tolerance of the beam. Cheap leveling beams will be less than 0.001" discrepant across the entire width. There is zero tolerance stack. With a plek machine, that tolerance is now going through a frame of extruded aluminum, I'd guess they are 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide, that's going to impart tons of tolerance stack alone, then you add in it having to support servos, the grinding head, the indicating head, the guitar...

0.0005mm is a completely insane claim. If you measured your frets, then put your finger on one for 10 seconds to impart some of the warmth from your finger, and then had the ability to measure that, the fret would change in dimension by more than 0.0005mm.
>>
Ibanez Portamento (fretless) 6 string,
Kiesel O2 fretless lined 6, where I beg to make it multiscale,
or Dingwall Z (or Prima Artist) fretless 6?
>>
>>129292048
>.0005” =0.0005mm
LMAO
>>
having that level of precision to level frets anyways is fucking retarded. The frets are in a relatively skinny chunk of wood. I bet if you measured movement of a guitar neck over the course of a day you'd see more than 0.001" movement across the length of the neck.
Pleks can only level and partially crown.
Not saying they are worse than a normal fret job, but they aren't better. It's a labor saving device that isn't very good at saving labor, so it's been repurposed into some dumbass meme service to sell to suckers.

Yeah, I don't understand how they managed to sell these to guitar shops since there's no way they're ever going to make their money back on it. They shouldn't be customer facing at all, just in manufacturing. Not worth getting any new guitar ran through one. Rather put the money toward more guitar since it shouldn't come out fucked from the factory that it requires something like that. If it's used, the prices I've seen are about the same as a refret
>>
>>129292401
setup plus fret level crowning and repair is $250 minimum at guitar center which is typically lower price than a LGS. fly by night shops might be slightly cheaper. Don’t forget the extra $60 charge if you have a non standard fretboard or extra $80 if you have stainless frets. Plek pro at Sweetwater is $299.
>>
>>129292539
I checked my LGS, they’re $120+, strings not covered and extra for tremolo guitars. Their turnaround time is 2.5 months on average though. I bought my own tools years ago.

Aside from a little tweak on the EQ on my fretted six-string bass, a new neck on the 4 string I defretted (not super enthused about the job I did, but I got the thing for $100), and maybe a half-decent acoustic, I am fairly set as far as my collection goes - it's not fancy, but everything does what I need it to.
All except for one piece - sheer wankery of the highest order of Onanism: A six (or 7 string) fretless bass. I think I've narrowed it down to three choices:

Ibanez Portamento:
https://www.ibanez.com/usa/products/detail/srf706_1p_07.html
Pros: a lot of bells and whistles for the price. Lowest cost of the three by nearly a grand.
Cons: comes as it comes - no customization, just tobaccoburst and a lot of tone choices

Kiesel A2 or O2:
https://www.kieselguitars.com/series/bass/o2-bass
Pros: Customizable. I can get pretty much any wood or finish I want, and I'm sure if I pay more I can get pretty much anything - like changing the headstock on the A2. Comes with built in Darkglass pre-amp, which can really help with blending in a tone.
Cons: I don't know if they'll do a fretless multiscale

Dingwall Z:
https://dingwallguitars.com/bass/z/
I'm pretty sure I can get these guys to make me whatever I want, as long is kind of looks like one of their basses. It might cost me $5k, but it would easily be the nicest instrument I would ever own.
Cons: Instantly recognizable as a Dingwall... I don't know if that counts as a real downside.

Other anon is right, your playback system is the problem. I'd get a 1x12 valve combo with an effects loop. As for which, I dunno what kind of distortion you like so just look up samples of marshall fender vox and more modern voiced ones like the 5150 or whatnot

I'm drawn to Jacksons myself with somewhat high action and somewhat heavy strings, but with some high output pickups, Explorers of pretty much any vintage and terroir seem to be natural riff machines.
>>
>>129297253
You can play thrash on any dual humbucker guitar. The best is the one you like and make music on. You don't need a floating locking tremolo to make thrash, but Kahler is the second brand behind Floyd making locking nut trems. Kahlers tend to be a little smoother in my experience with less going out of tune on the G string every time you give the bar a good yank.

Vs and Dean ML's, Razorbacks, etc. are good live metal guitars because you can lock the V in place with your leg if necessary. Jackson makes all kinds of shit - they're one of the more popular super-strat, the Kelly's one of the more popular Explorer knockoffs. Their string-thru bridges are usually pretty good, and their stock pickups are also pretty far from terrible.

This is my board. There are a lot of different brands here. If you're going to buy individual pedals, I wouldn't restrict yourself to a specific brand. You might as well get a multifx unit. There are different "slots" in your effects chain (overdrive, distortion, fuzz, boost, modulation), and rather than buying whatever your favorite brand makes for that "slot", it can be better to do your own research and pick the pedal you want in that slot. Otherwise you might find yourself replacing it in the future when you fall out of love with your specific brand.
>>
>>129299426
I dunno this looks a little cumbersome but the unique footswitches are nice. You could run an IR-2 into a Katana with a footswitch and save alot more space
>>129299431
You could get a GX-10 for the price of like 2 Wazas the better deal is clear imo

Get a good multifx. They're cheap and they've sounded good enough for a while now.

Buying single pedals is one of the stupidest things you could start doing. When a lot of people and myself started buying pedals, the average price for a pedal was $99 or less and multifx were ass, so it was easy to buy a lot of different things and try them.
Then the average price jumped up where almost everything is boutique priced. You'll see a bunch of redditor boards that are made by software devs that can't play or they play in church bands. You don't need that to play live, and pro musicians stick to the basics they can find anywhere (why you see so many Boss pedals).

Guitarists are too retarded to figure out you have all these time-based and modulation effects and more inside your daw with more control. Learn the effects in Ableton/FL/Logic/Reaper/whatever you use.
The only major exceptions are analog distortions/overdrives/fuzzes which can't be recreated with DSP.

Technically 2mm, but sculpted in such a way that they're quite thin between the thumb and finger(s) and at the tip. Basically a jumbo jazz III. I found the radiums a little too stiff (whatever fluorescent plastic they're using is a bit stiffer than the others), but the blacks and whites are good for heavier picking - very aggressive on the snap, even when not playing heavily. Their Flex picks (1.3) are still quite thick, but seem to play more like something in the 0.7-0.9mm range.
The Stealth 3's are a lot more like jazz 3's. I don't really like them. The heavy's are way too heavy. I'm still deciding if I like the XLs for bass or not - I didn't get that gig , so for the most part I'm still playing bass with my fingers anyway.
Neat little company. I'm sad they stopped doing the custom prints... and I don't like more than half of their products, but I can see why some people might.

You cannot stack more than one effect from each category, so if you were looking to stack drive pedals gain stages this won't work for you. I'm asking for some advice on training with electric guitar. I bought the cheapest electric guitar possible on amazon (around 140 dollars the brand is called DONNER), and it broke on me after a couple of months of practicing. I'll have come by the money to buy a new sturdier guitar hopefully this summer but until then is it still good to practice with just an unplugged electric guitar?
>>
How do you guys find cool chords to play around with when writing songs?
I don't think I want to do just open chords like everyone else
>>
>>129301310
start with something... either a basic chord progression, or a melody, or even a rhythm. Note it down so you don't lose your starting point. Tweak the melody or the accompaniment, noting outside notes. See what notes might clash and whether you like it or not (flat fifths and minor ninths for the most part), adjust the chords accordingly. If it still sounds too simple, or isn't quite what you're after, sub in different notes of chords - maybe you don't necessarily want a major or minor chord, so move the third out of the way to a major 2nd or a 4th to make it a suspended chord, or maybe you want a 9th, 11th, or 13th instead of a 7th in your major/minor chord (a major sixth instead of a major seventh is a pretty nice jazzy sub). Maybe sub out entire chords for something in the same family (a third or a fifth up or down is basically the easy way of doing this. II's and IV's sub for each other nicely, as do V's and VII's, IIIs and VIs, etc.). Maybe the substitution doesn't quite nail it, so you move from the subbed chord to the original, or vice versa.
>Short answer:
practice, making the ears and instincts better

a whole lot of fucking around.

https://www.all-guitar-chords.com/chords/index

>>
>>129301524
You need to learn what the chords mean. Chord charts are a shortcut that bypass the important part - learning the chords and the fret board. The name of the chord tells you what notes are in it and what the root note is. You can figure it out from there.

>>129301300
In what way did it break?

$2 on the jack.
If there's a backplate or a full faceplate on it, unscrew it, unscrew the nut on the outside of the jack and any screws holding any sort of plate in place, pop it in through the hole if necessary and see if one of the wires has come loose from the solder points on the inside of the jack.
It's an easy fix, especially if you have a decent soldering iron. Jacks are dirt cheap to replace if what's there is trashed or globbed up with a crap soldering job.
