is prog rock dead?
Why is so much prog rock both British and from the 70s?
redpill me on rock
I saw a comment saying that Pawn Hearts was a political and violent album in defiance of fascism, now am I stupid, or did I completely miss this, or is someone lying on the internet? I mean with fucking nonsense like this as lyrics, how is it in opposition to fascism?
prog rock, why?
>>129314928You are onto something>>129314931why progress rock? So we can go beyond diamond
It's prog
>>129314912The US radio industry initially wanted nothing to do with prog since longer tracks meant less ads per hour. Musicians needed the radio support to tour. The UK didn't really have rock radio until '67, so bands had more freedom to develop their repertoire in local clubs.
>>129309000https://youtu.be/etvnUsZayFk?si=ABAohUfiHWz2r4NCIt's actually better then anything Genesis ever did
>>129315516The BBC being a public broadcaster had a lot more freedom to air non-commercial "art music". Previously that had mostly manifested as classical and jazz but the expansion of the rock programming created a huge new platform for young underground bands. Before John Peel was the godfather of post-punk and indie he was the godfather of prog.
They publicly broadcast BBC over there?

Hahaha.
>>129325377Cavett was grasping at straws here since Bowie was coked out of his mind and extremely nervous and wouldn't open up or keep a consistent train of thought. He was just going off of things he'd read in previous interviews and Bowie was a notoriously shitposty interviewee in those years. He'd just say whatever. The best version of Wurdah Itah is the version you hear in that one French movie. It's kind of baffling how much better it is than the studio recording, shame I don't think they've ever released the movie version on its ownCompare thishttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ol99DMfPiD8with the bit at 31:39https://youtu.be/KjSkREURdW8?t=1899
>>129329086The album version is prob the weakest version they've put out. I didn't like it much until I heard some of the live performances and understood what they were trying to achieve. Given the circumstances I think they hastily put the album together before the piece was fully realized

I want to write a movie based on Thick as a Brick. It would begin with Gerald already having written the poem and snowball into this absurd kafkaesque satirical dark comedy with everyone from his family and teachers to international critics tripping over thenselves to “understand” the song and how and why he wrote it and twisting it one way or another. Meanwhile Gerald is just this quiet stoic autist who barely reacts to any of this and doesn’t really know or care what it means.

>>129337236Different anon, in my opinion Flower Kings peaked with Paradox Hotel and Sum of no Evil. They hit their most complete and focused form while they still had new ideas and could play with energy. Everything after Sum of No Evil is totally disposable slop and the band should've retired at the top instead of souring their legacy, they got too fucking old.
>>129340496There's also thishttps://recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/20213
>>129341504I'm curious as to when you got into them. Sum of No Evil was their first album I was able to get on release day. I would have given every album of theirs 4 or 5 stars up until that point. I was so hyped for Sum and was horribly let down. It's still 3 stars, but still. I stopped following them until like 2016 when I picked up Banks and Desolation which I grew to really enjoy. I preordered the next 4 albums and hated them all.The point of that rambling was me being excited for Flower Kings album leads to disappointment. Me having no expectations and going into an album that has already been released leads to appointment. Perhaps a similar thing is happening with you.
>>129341938I genuinely don't remember how I discovered Flower Kings, but I recall going through their discography in release order. The funny thing is I was initially kinda underwhelmed by Sum of No Evil but it has survived repeat listens and my evolving taste in music better than most of the band's output. I'm not saying their pre-Paradox Hotel stuff is shit or that I don't enjoy it but going back to it there's more fluff between the memorable parts.

What does /prog/ think of Magma's first two records?
>>129346022He has moments where it comes together, but it seems to be more luck than anything, because then his "great composer" decisions fuck it all up.>>129346053nah. when it's good, ok, maybe, but that's not most of the time
>>129347640first one is interesting but Christian is still deep, deeeep in his falsetto screech phase.now that you mention it, it's an album that would be worth going back to and try and make a single album version, cut the fat. Could be a great redux.2nd album, i like even more, a lot more, it's a truly great balance of magma being magma (weird) but having some funky grooves - those bass lines, mostly 2nd side i think, fire.but i rarely see centigrade getting some love, or being mentioned at all
