I recommend 80s or 90s pop because it’s mixed in a way where you can actually hear the harmony and has a good balance of simple and complex progressions and rhythms. anything modern is shit with bad mixing and the older stuff is usually one or two chord vamps or is very complicated rhythmically or has very little remaining space in which to operate

>>
>>129403945
you need to vocalize along with your instrument while playing every time you play. the other part of transcribing is using theory to recognize patterns that are common in certain song structures and players; that gets rid of half the workload.
>>
>>129403852
Got any specifics you could link?
>>
>>129403976
sorry I don’t. if you want to start out easy with some 2 chord vamps with lots of space, play along to James Brown. particularly with The Original JBs. I assume you’re already working on your basic chords and general finger exercises. once you learn your intervals and how chords are built, and build up picking accuracy you’ll be halfway there.

Nice telecaster! Playing other people's songs is sort of helpful, but learning on your own and flexing your creative muscles is far more helpful longterm. As the other anons said, a good way to do this is playing over other songs - this gives you a feel for timing and tempo rather than simply making the right notes or chords.
Another thing I'll say is learn many different chord shapes and voicings. Moveable chord-shapes that you can bring up and down the fretboard are incredibly helpful for creativity. Writing songs becomes really easy this way. I'll also say, don't fall into the open-tuning trap yet. It might seem attractive or like a short cut to do easy single-finger chords, but they're incredibly limited, and it's often said you have to know the rules to know when to break them. This is one of those cases. Don't be afraid to break out of standard tuning, to be sure, but learning the notes, chord-shapes, voicings and scales in standard tuning should take precedent over trying new tunings.
Anyway, I'm glad I'm not the only bound tele owner here now
>>
>>129403804
I tried to cope with them for ages and ages about them, but came quickly to the conclusion that usually even starter brands like squier or epiphone, when properly set up, can outplay older electric guitars.

Nah not a shitpost. Im the black bass anon who had the jazzmaster. When I was practicing last year I never really had that much fun like I do with bass. It's easy for me to pick up my bass and mess around over a drum beat or play along to songs, feels like I could do it for hours. When I was trying guitar last year, I always felt like I was forcing myself to play rather than just enjoying guitar. I learned 2 songs from a band I like but it was just notes so no chords. My attempts at songs with chords didnt go well but part of me wants to try again.
>>
>>129404738
Just use a pillow
>>
>>129404754
I learned everything I wanted to on guitar; singing and playing at the same time and a few jimi page and slash solos. I also went back to bass just because I’d rather be grooving; writing for bass also comes a lot more naturally to me. learning one can help you play the other which is nice. I just like playing music with other people I don’t really care about the attention
>>
>>129404754
I was originally learning 4 string and considered jumping to bass before deciding on 6 guitar. The only difference is the two strings but I feel like you get a lot more out of 6 than bass. You can try and jam solo but you're not going to get a lot of mileage compared to 6 string which can do a ton of stuff. Unless you are using something as tonely unique as double bass playing an electric bass exclusively seems like you are losing out on creative possibilites.
>>
>>129404828
I get where you’re coming from but I think less than 0.1% of players reach the creative limit with even 4 strings. it opens the door for fringe cases like playing full chords or getting that extra octave on the instrument, but if it’s not even as enjoyable as what some guy was playing in the 1960s on a bo diddley, then what was gained

It's really more about wanting guitars on my songs, I know I can ask people but part of me would rather play it myself. It would definitely take more dedication to learn guitar than bass. At this point im comfortable on bass in my 2nd year on the instrument. I'm looking into getting another guitar for my peavey since I'm not liking it that much. going to get a different bass and down tune that one. I would like to casually be good at guitar but still have bass be my main focus.

nta but I usually do fine with the note content stuff, it's just arranging the notes into the proper rhythms that is a complete bitch for me. Even if I can play the rhythm by ear, I just can't conceptualize the subdivisions for each note/group of notes a lot of the time.
>>
>>129403975
vocalizing isn't necessary. you can imagine what something will sound like in your head. vocalization is useful for communicating what something sounds like to another person if you don't have your instrument
>>
>>129405584 (me)
you shouldn't do anything goofy like vocalizing while you are practicing, because you will form a habit that carries over to performing and you'll be the weirdo who can't play without singing along to what he's doing

>>
>drop c
>distortion on
>doom stoner metal drum backing track
This has awoken something in me.

The only problem is that I am so lost in Drop C tuning. I cheat and just play as if I'm playing in D minor. But I want to be more conscious and perhaps even play in other scales. I'm waiting for my standard tuning guitar to arrive, so I can finally cave in and start learning the shapes for major and minor scales and become more proficient.

>>129403945
Start transcribing. It's ridiculous how ignorant we are of the fact that practicing actually helps. I hated the fact that there weren't any tabs of my favourite songs, so I started creating them myself. Utilize the AI stem splitting tools for even easier transcription.

That’s what happens when you don’t practice to a metronome. You can get by playing songs you’ve already heard and rehearsed a hundred times, but when it comes time to improvise you will miss the changes and rush your licks.
>>
>>129405935
the reason you think the majority of professionals do this is you're used to watching their tutorial videos on youtube, or worse paying for them on patreon. they are vocalizing for you, not for them. any musician worth their salt vocalizes in their head. what do you think a singer does, vocalizes before they sing? fuck outta here

No, you don't understand. I know how to play the shit in time with the proper rhythms. I simply struggle to know where to put the 5-tuplet 16th note group and dotted eighth rest when transcribing in notation software etc. so I have to brute force it doing guess-and-check, trying out different subdivisions and groupings until I find the combination that fits. For example, here's a Greg Howe Blues scale improv/demo thing I tried to transcribe. I guess this was before I figured out how to use grace notes.

The triangles? Those are useless forbidden Doritos. I guess they’re okay if you’re playing koto or baglama saz or something, but the surface are of the triangle gets caught up no diggity no doubt.

I use Dunlop .73mm as an all around pick for acoustic and electric. If it feels too loose or I want to economy pick, you can choke up on it to reduce the surface area and tense up the material.

The jazz iii and Dunlop stubby 3mm are really fun to use once you get over the learning curve. You’d be surprised how much your right hand slows you up and these picks tend to glide over without chirping too much.
>>
>>129407050
That name doesn't have the same connotations in northern europe
>>
>>129403840
Also, here’s a pointer:

If you’re worried about getting caught up due to string depth, try picking right around the 15th - 17th fret range. Because the fretboard is below, you can use that as a depth finder. If you’re still dropping the pick, use one with grip material.
>also check your saddle height and adjust accordingly

I really like moving my RH around in circular motions if I’m sweeping. Each string gauge has a certain amount of “give”/resistance and synchronizing how quickly you can actuate the string and move past it takes time to master.

>exercise:
Try to use minimal effort to pick an arpeggio across two adjacent strings. That’s all pairs, so:
> e to a
> a to d
> d to g
> g to b
> b to e

Try to do those all in time. Next, do three pairs:
> e a d
> a d g
> d g b
> g b e

Then fours:
> e a d g
> a d g b
> d g b e

Finally both 5 string groups, and then all.

Eventually, you will start to anticipate the minimal pressure needed.
> I haven’t had a pick get stuck or fall out of my hands unless I’m drunk and sweaty

I used to do it by hand. It’s a lot of fun. I remember doing the bass part for “YYZ” and I was like, no shit, Geddy is slapping the pickups before the solo that ends on the harmonics.

You can also ultra-hear stuff. Like, I had to pick out the bass on Killing is My Business, and I spent an hour trying to determine if Ellefson was doubling the guitar during the main riff. Then I spent even more time trying to hear where the fuck the timpanis were in Rattlehead.

Zappa is a lot of fun to transcribe. I did all of Willie the Pimp, moved to Echidna’s Arf of You (nice metric modulation towards the end to 5/8 at 3:10). Finally, I tried my hand on The Black Page (from Live in NY) and I got most of the polyrhythms right.

The biggest pan in the ass is rubato shit, hidden cues (like the stick click in Black Dog), overlapping instruments, understanding extended techniques on instruments (like lip slurs on trombone) or not having an instrument on hand to check pitches

"I feel I've been misunderstood. My ideas i bring to the table are not in my own self interest but to increase the bands repritoire. i felt we didn't have enough material for the funky set. if i were truly interested in myself i'd simply front my own band instead i try to bring material for the band.

My ideas on production is to elevate the art we have as a band and so we can gain more online listeners. I felt i could do a better job at production for with you so i decided to record the track on my own. i felt our recording missed the mark. I did this because i care about the art we make and especially a song i brought forth to the band.

I feel unsatisfied because i feel the idea's i bring to the band could help us become more successful. I feel that im writing very strong ideas. I feel ignored. If anyone else in the band came up with their own song that fit the style we were going for, i would welcome it and be open to it if i felt it was a strong idea. we can write collectively but we can also write individually. It's about furthering our catalog.

if this was all about myself i would look for studio musicians. instead i try to work with my friends and create gold.

I feel the reason we haven't done well is we do not put enough time into arranging and rearranging our material. some songs are very repetitive, some songs have too many solo sections, some songs could use an extra section.
i feel a reason we haven't done well at making fans is we do not connect with the audience enough by being memorable. our image and the way we appear and present ourselves matters too. This is why im considering wearing a tracksuit and shades to sell our "funky" image. it might sseem silly but its about leaving an impression. the worst thing you can do in music business is be forgettable.

i have lots of ideas i think would help the band, and i do not plan on leaving unless i'm asked to

Could be a lot of things, uneven frets causing weird jumps when you bend, string could be going out of tune mid bend, if you have a strat sometimes the little pegs on the bridge will move if you bend too hard and you gotta straighten it back out, could just be a skill issue humans are very inconsistent.

Use the floating thumb method instead of just solely relying on posting up on the pickup.

You should be able to do both, but floating thumb is cleaner for RH muting. For example, if you have to pedal on the low e or a, then posting on the low string or pickup makes sense.

Floating thumb also is a better position if you want to switch to slap, palm mute, or play in a guitar-oriented fingerpicking fashion.

Ricochet bowing (or bariolage)>>129409838
is fun as fuck, especially if you’re playing a showstopper like Orange Blossom Special:

https://youtu.be/eCBdiutb-50?si=mLerg9gsECXtj0rX

As a gelatinous entity that shall not namefag, transferring violin and guitar techniques is really cool. For example, when was the last time you did left hand pizzicato on guitar? I’ve been trying to do that and adding hybrid picking to create things like call-and-response.

Similarly, strumming a violin is a hoot. I think Sugarcane Harris does this on “Willie the Pimp” (they nerfed it in all available mixes). Comes up at 1:20ish:
https://youtu.be/HwakfxJV8bQ

Here’s a cool resource of 100+ bowing techniques if you’ve got the slime to invest:

>>
Q: at what price point does a guitar just become a guitar, regardless of brand name?
What I mean is, lower priced guitars will at some point carry all generic parts, the same parts the whole factory is using to build Epiphones, Guilds, Squiers, Gretsches, PRSs, etc... whereas at the higher end a Rickenbacker is uniquely a Rickenbacker, or a MIJ Gretsch has Gretsch-specific parts. At some point the brand name doesn't even matter, and you're getting the same outfit as another brand, just in a different shape.
>>
one thing i noticed about the resident methhead is they used to post ai-images. you think they consult an LLM before posting to /gg/ and that's why it comes across as so schizofrenic?

theres a spectrum
all of the bottom end guitars play and feel essentially the same (regardless of yt shills and plebbit copers) and then its rising returns up to about 2-3k and then its diminished returns to 4k and then anything above that essentially feels the same (impeccable)

Cheap guitars are cheap whores: you can and should do everything you want to them. They’re more fun to mod and you can abuse them.

Whereas some of the acoustic Martins I’ve played felt much better, but I’d start to think twice about bending the neck of slapping the body - all of which I require to reach climax.

Nice. Overdub something to cover a few of the clams (intro and at :40)

>>129415126
Use a socket wrench on the outside nut. However, if it’s been loose for a while, you may need to resolder the poz/nig connections. Spray it out with a duster to get rid of any debris while you’re in there.

Loctite is good if you plan to never change it out and the electronics are good, but use a minimal amount.

Corrosion will make them snap when you’re bending. Also, old strings kill your volume.

And that green gunk deposits on your fretboard, making bending a slimey chore

These are my 3 main goals for guitar as of right now. I would say learning songs with chords is going to be the biggest challenge. Going to actively avoid barring because it filtered me the first time around. I already know the lead to 2 songs by duster so thats already down to 8.

I was expecting 2, if I hadn't given up I'd be at 6 months by now but that's in the past. I don't mind it taking a while I just couldn't see myself getting it down on the past. Now I'm more confident that I'll get it down. I really did just give up too quickly. I was expecting some things on guitar to be easier for me to grasp because of my time on bass. Did not go that way but I'm back on the horse.
>>
>>129416902
Godspeed Anon. Yeah the point was, everyone expects you to start there as a guitarist and which yeah it makes sense because you can make entire songs with 1-2 chords but as far as finger dexterity and muscle memory goes they are very complex shapes and transitioning from something from an open D to a B minor can be quite difficult. There are workarounds like playing the Bluegrass shape G so you can play the C and Fmaj7 with the same shape or using a capo so you only need to learn a few chords.
