I need advice on how to handle different tunings. Im pretty new and dont want to buy a second guitar. Should I buy a digitech whammy dt pedal and use it for now to drop down to c standard? The plan will eventually be to hardtail it and actually get it set up in c standard tuning and tune up and down manually to d or b and let the whammy dt take it to e or a if needed. This a good way of handling things? How does it sound compared to an ehx pitch fork or digitech drop? fwiw im looking at 270 shipped for the whammy dt used.

The DT whammy is just the Whammy+Drop except it also goes up pitches and like your pic you can control it with a footswitch whereas the Drop you have to move the knob to change tunings and can only go down. Drop is the slightly better choice compared to the Pitch Fork going by the few videos I've seen and the comments on them.

Do you think its a decent idea to set my guitar up in c standard eventually and use the pedal and actual tuning to move up to e or a? I have an sd-2 and I'd probably put 12-60 strings on it. Would those string guages still be playable at d and b tunings, before using the pedal?

If 99% of your songs are going to be played in C standard you're better off physically tuning to that because the Drop gets a bit muddy the lower you go especially if you add distortion, no idea about pitch shifting up or using that specific string gauge though
>>
>>129388634
Also depending on your guitar you'll no doubt have to adjust the bridge and truss rod if you want it kept tuned that low

>>129388141
I wouldn't recommend any of that to a beginner really. All drop tuners sound pretty shit, the new Boss one is a little bit better but it's for people who are much more advanced at playing than you. Pick a tuning and learn that, then when you get more guitars you can start playing around. It's really disorienting hearing notes come out of your guitar that aren't what you're playing and there's a bit of a lag.

>>129388349
>12-60
That low string is way heavier than you need for C. You're going to need to file the nut slot and your low E tuner might not be big enough to support it. You also need to adjust the pickup heights a fair amount to make sure it doesn't boom too loud
>>
>>129388728

I should've stated I want to learn theory as a foundation so I can apply it a piano, guitar or synth or whatever

I know, I play guitar but I want the theory I learn to translate to other instruments so I'm not starting from scratch.
I actually am glad I started with guitar instead of piano - piano might be easier to learn theory on but learning theory on guitar takes a little more brain power

The first thing any elementary music teacher will teach is do re mi.. and your instrument is the voice.

Right, and that instrument determines the context in which you are learning music theory. Learning theory with your voice vs. with a recorder vs. with a piano vs. with a guitar vs. in an ensemble will all be different.

sending this to my band...

"I feel I've been misunderstood. My ideas i bring to the table are not in my own self interest but to increase the bands repritoire. i felt we didn't have enough material for the funky set. if i were truly interested in myself i'd simply front my own band instead i try to bring material for the band.

My ideas on production is to elevate the art we have as a band and so we can gain more online listeners. I felt i could do a better job at production for with you so i decided to record the track on my own. i felt our recording missed the mark. I did this because i care about the art we make and especially a song i brought forth to the band.

I feel unsatisfied because i feel the idea's i bring to the band could help us become more successful. I feel that im writing very strong ideas. I feel ignored. If anyone else in the band came up with their own song that fit the style we were going for, i would welcome it and be open to it if i felt it was a strong idea. we can write collectively but we can also write individually. It's about furthering our catalog.

if this was all about myself i would look for studio musicians. instead i try to work with my friends and create gold.

I feel the reason we haven't done well is we do not put enough time into arranging and rearranging our material. some songs are very repetitive, some songs have too many solo sections, some songs could use an extra section.
i feel a reason we haven't done well at making fans is we do not connect with the audience enough by being memorable. our image and the way we appear and present ourselves matters too. This is why im considering wearing a tracksuit and shades to sell our "funky" image. it might sseem silly but its about leaving an impression. the worst thing you can do in music business is be forgettable.

i have lots of ideas i think would help the band, and i do not plan on leaving unless i'm asked to."

Thank you for the advice. I kinda just want the pedal at the moment to play d and c standard stuff like acid bath. I wasnt planning to actually change the tuning on my guitar for several months. At that point Id have someone do the string change, nut filing and setup. I only chose 12-60 because thats what sammy duet uses for this signature guitar in c standard. Does the XS100 really sound that bad? I dont mind using headphones for the weirdness between the strings and amp with the pitch shifter. And dont worry, for now my focus is on learning e standard with justin guitar, but i really do want to play some of my favorite songs in lower tunings when im not doing actual practice.
>>
>>129388141
As long as you only drop a semi tone they sound pretty legit. Not bad enough to feel like you need a dedicated guitar for that tuning. So what I would suggest doing seeing as you are getting the whammy which can pitch up, is to put 1 string gauge heavier on your guitar and tune it down to e flat. That way you can drop the e to C sharp and use the pedal to bring it down to c. And likewise use it to pitch up to e or drop d if you need to. That should cover 90% of songs you want to play. And there’s really nothing in F besides some pop songs so if you want to go even lower it still sounds ok a full tone or even a tone and a half dropped. You’ll really start noticing it start sounding weird around 2 tones lower.
>>
>>129388988
You can change the strings to 10s or 11s depending on what comes factory without really changing the setup. That’s why I said just do that and tune a half step lower. It’ll sound better for the drop stuff and you’ll still have good string tension. It’s how I set my guitars up if I’m running a drop pedal.
>>
>>129389049
The guitar actually comes with 10s on it for e standard, presumably because of the shorter scale length.
>>
>>129389066
Yeah so put a set of like power slinky 11-48’s on it or whatever and tune it down a half step. It won’t mess with the setup enough to notice.
>>

>>
>>129389083
Thank you, youve given me a lot of useful information. Ill think on what you said before I purchase anything, let alone change anything on my guitar.
>>
>>129388988
The pedals are mainly for musicians playing live so they don't have to bring a ton of guitars. It's a compromise that makes sense live, but for home playing it's not ideal. It changes your tone a bit as it's synthesizing the sound. Some of the attack and response characteristics will be a little different too.

>I dont mind using headphones for the weirdness between the strings and amp with the pitch shifter
You still feel and hear a different sound from your strings
The latency number posted in this vid is about 13-14ms
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EowrRyCb-Cs

As the other anon said, you can probably go up to 11s without massive changing your setup, but for 12s and beyond you'd need nut filing. If it's a shorter scale, then you're going to struggle with string floppiness and tuning stability if you go too low. 11s should get you down to D but might not get you to C without going to 12s.
>>
>>129389257
Thank you for the info. Im not planning on actually changing my strings for several months, but was hoping this would help make my guitar more flexible when I do. The 12s are exactly what were recommended for c standard by person whos signature guitar this is.

I have been putting all my tuners on my basses in a slight angle since I bought a Warwick years ago who were the first to do this.
It is so fucking comfortable to not have to awkwardly turn your wrist when tuning but to simply stretch your hand out. Many other brands like Ibanez, Dingwall and Mayones are doing it now, too.

you'll find most of this just watching troy grady or lurking here or guitar forums. he tries to make it seem mysterious when shilling his guitar school but cracking the code has already done all of this for free and given all of the movements names like dsx and usx or pick slanting, etc. there's only so far someone telling you about pick angles and escape motions can go, you have to actually play guitar to get better.
>>
>>129393690
sound > looks, always. i had this dilemma but with pickup covers. i'm at a stage in my guitar playing life where i just can't deal with anything on the guitar making me unhappy anymore. if i get a guitar with pickup covers it either gets new pickups or the covers from straight off. don't be a sucker for aesthetics, go after that sound you want.
>>
>>129393782
Honestly I'm not even sure what sound I want. I'm sorta used to cheap pickups and bad tones (the latter mostly cause of my incompetence) so when it comes to pickups, I just go for what the guitar guys I like use. It's still gonna be a while til I'll need it but I do wanna get the pickguard design at least finished for my future mod guitar and going single vs hum on the neck was my main concern. I would go for a single sized humbucker though, not a regular single. But yeah, not too sure yet, I'll give it more thought.

I use Amplitube with a ToneX into a power amp and cab. Its very decent and has a lot of options, but I it lacks the low end thump that comes from a tube power section. The built in noise reduction sucks too, I use my own pedal.

Bought THR10. Am happy. Got a good lead tone inside a minute and have been having a blast.
Also the speakers are interesting. They feel kinda loud when you're just infront, but moving like 4 meters arway diagoonally and its really quiet. I guess thats the nearfield thingy but its new to me.

I've seen those. They do look nice but not the style I wanna go for. Also they don't have the drilled bits for the electronics, I'd go for just two pots and a toggle switch instead of a blade.

I just got this yesterday.

I'm plugging into a cranked Fender Frontman 10G with Headphones jacked in but just sitting on the floor. It's a surprisingly nice fissy fuzzy sound.

I just don't know what to focus on to progress. I haven't had a guitar in over a year and I was never that good to begin with. I started playing 14 years ago, but I haven't had a lesson... I just fiddle around aimlessly.

noodling won't get you anywhere
you need to practice with goals in mind
learn a song
expand on a riff
practice theory
goals don't need to be rigid or narrowly focused, you just need to be working on some form of general progression, even if it's as simple as practicing a few scales or arpeggios a couple times a session, or just trying to play songs you've learned in the past a bit cleaner.

Get a Squier or an Epi and I'd suggest you go for an audio interface instead of an amp. And you definitely don't need a clip on tuner when tuning apps for phones exist.
>>

if you're just playing at home for fun then a katana or a spark are a good option. Loads of potential there

a decent snark tuner is like $15, and works way better than any phone app.
I think he should get one.
I would recommend a hardtail guitar (no tremolo) as a starter guitar, unless you like to tinker on things. Squier has good budget offerings, as do plenty of new chinese brands. Harley Benton was a good offering, but they pulled out of US distribution so you need to import and pay tariffs now.

Sure but it's really not that much of a difference. And if he goes interface instead of amp, he'll get tuner vsts instead.

I still think an amp is better for a beginner. Less options than software, doesn't need to be shackled to a computer and you can take it places, and let others listen to it easily. Tuner on a headstock is nice until they get the muscle memory down to not look at their tuning pegs.

I never stop practicing mentally.

Physically, I do a little check and see if the stuff from the last practice session set in. If I’m lacking, the spider exercise (all variants) and doing some stretching exercises above the 12th fret and descending usually gets me in playing shape. RH usually only requires fingerpicking to warm up or tremelo picking from the wrist to get in the zone. Usually takes less than 5 minutes cuz If rather warm up by learning new shit (unless there’s a gig coming up, then it’s get stage ready an hour before)
>>
>>129394799
It’s staccato playing, which comes from both lifting the LH and keeping the shape while the RH muting controls note duration. Also, the RH picking doesn’t necessarily hit all the strings, but aims for where the intended fretted/open strings are.

They are fundamentally different. If you can show me how 2-, 3-, and 4-part harmonies with voicing leading works on guitar, I’d love to…
>ow my fingersssssss
That’s right, guitar gets at max 6 notes. Piano has 10 max, and more if you want to smudge some notes.

>Muh guitar range
You literally can’t play bass notes below E2. The farthest you can stretch in one position is what? Two octaves and a third?
> piano chads play anywhere
I can do an 11th in both hands, already dominating guitarlets in one hand. Oh wait, I can just move my arms and expand notes guitarists wish they could play.

You can literally glissando the scale on day one piano. Guitarists don’t even learn scales if they are ignorant.

>Whether a note is sharp or flat is completely irrelevant musically.
Dude, just stop

You don’t read music and obviously haven’t played in orchestras. Flats and sharps are different, especially when you get into microtonal or temperament-based music. When you’re sightreading at a high-level, it’s way easier to do in piano versus guitar to see a sharp to think, ah yes, looks like G major/e minor territory.

That same approach

>It has nothing to do with harmonies or voice leading
Wasn’t that your original premise? That it’s easier to see it on guitar? Which makes sense until you get to the g > b string relationship and now your little major arpeggio sounds diminished.

>namefag

Random street? I killed it at the cafes in Paris, Sauchiehall in Glasgow, Sternschanze in Hamburg, the Ramblas in Barcelona, Christiania in Copenhagen, the main square in Krakow, and even Kaunas Lithuania (we got to meet the mayor at a press conference). We had a following when we played Manchester, UK.

We played Plan-it-x fest in Bloomington, Weirdstock in the Boston Commons, and some other hippie festivals in New England. And for some festivals, we opted out of stage invites because we made more money busking and didn’t have to soundcheck. Less gear, less worries. Plus I had a foursome with my lady and two lesbians in München after skinny dipping in the Englischer Garten (or wherever people surf during the day).

point is, there's only one way to make any particular note on a piano. you check the key signature, you look at the notes, you know exactly where to put your fingers - in this regard, it serves the same purpose as guitar tablature.
meanwhile a guitar can give you three different ways to play the same note. so standard musical notation doesn't quite do the same thing for a guitarist as it does for a pianist. the guitarist has to decide where it's best to put his fingers
>>
>>129400426
Just do it for yourself and don't worry about where you are in relation to other people and eventually you'll have created something fulfilling.
>>
>>129400758
>point is, there's only one way to make any particular note on a piano. you check the key signature, you look at the notes, you know exactly where to put your fingers - in this regard, it serves the same purpose as guitar tablature.

Wrong again. If you could read music, you’d understand rhythm, dynamics, style, time signatures, and -
>you’d know exactly where to put your fingers
Um, no. Pianistic composers often require different fingers. Look at the Bartok pic - you could easily play the right hand melody with your pinky instead of your middle finger.

I’ve never seen a thorough tab convey accents. I mean most tab is 5 5 8 5 3 1 0
>what, how could you not know that was Seven Nations Army?

>the guitarist has to decide where it's best to put his fingers
Not really unless you’re disabled. Try “Choro no.1” by Villa-Lobos and you tell me where to put your fingers. Chances are you do it exactly like every other classical guitarist (because it’s impossible to play elsewhere).

I also reported the company for mail fraud, as they tried to pass off a fraudulent letter (no stamp, non-permissible in court) and dropped it in my mailbox.

You’re bad at math but thank you for misremembering my age (I started playing music at 7). I finished touring at 32 before COVID.

>Sex pest?
I get laid plenty. I think you have a negative relationship to women and it shows. It’s this frustration that you project into whom you believe I am.

So, to recap:
>you can’t play guitar
>you have bad opinions
>and you have NO bitches
and yet you’re here

>story time
Four years ago, I moved to the Midwest for LCOL and by poor luck, moved next to a dude who was having meth freakouts (he was hated by all in the town). His brother owned a bunch of property that were so slumlorded that the city repossessed EIGHTY of them. This dude yelled at a 9 year old child with dev. disability (he called the kid “a fucking asshole”), so I stuck up for him. That got me on probation for two years (m4 aggravated menacing), and then these bikers tried to kick in my hotel door as retaliation (meth is a scourge).

So I moved further west for safety, probation is done at the end of this month, and I’m moving up to NH with an FHA. Unfortunately, I chose this last house to make noise at all hours, but the situation deteriorated rapidly.

>Sloam here

Tangerine Dream has basic progressions. “Love on a Real Train” is mostly just a b6 - b7 - 1minor progression, with some pentatonic notes syncopated off the main track.

I haven’t really listened to Ash Ra Tempel, but the first song on Spotify “Day-Dream” just sounds like a I -> b7 vamp with a twelve string (or just heavy chorusing). Electric guitar on the track is just standard blues wank. Chick sounds hot.

Nice. Also don't mind him too much, he's the resident troll. He's been here for several years now, alongside the Brazilian who graduated from here already. Notice he won't post playing, he's just really good with baiting.
