Horizontal scales give you the ability to shift positions and access modes. If, for example, you are in F and slide up to a D on either e string, can you rip a scale ascending or descending?

The way I figured this out was that forget all fingerings and try to play across the entire neck in the key. Deliberately mess yourself up, and add bad finger placements. See if you can keeping steady 16th notes at whatever tempo

What's the difference between humbuckers and single coil in terms of sound? If I ever get a new guitar should I prioritize getting one with a different pickup arrangement?

Time to practice bass a little. What I will practice:
1. Practice the bass line I composed recently. Let's say, practice it for 15 min. Then 5 min break.
2. Practice playing the bass line of 50 Cent - Ayo Technology to the actual recording. Also maybe listen and see if there are any notable variations in the song. Also 15 min, then 5 min break.
3. Practice the bass line from Hola Perdida. 15 min.

Essentially, every chord progression has a function. And every chord within that serves its own function.

Take a simple I IV bVII IV (1 4 b7 4). This has a familiar sound you’ve heard in Neil Diamond’s “Cherry Cherry” or The Romantics “What I like about you”.

Now, what can get interesting is that that progression in E (E A D), for example, also can function as a V I IV in the key of A.

>why is this important?
Same sound different function. Depending on the melody notes, the progression itself will sound different. This is also how artists can change key.

One definitive version of this is Fahey’s “Spanish Dance”, which does what I described above. You can hear how he change the chord order and emphasis, eventually hitting a
> III7 - IV - V of V7(first inversion) - V7

>ugh the Wendy’s was a mistake

>where to learn them all
While being piano-oriented, OpenStudio has TONS of chord progression info. The main dude is Midwestern nice, the bald dude is the advanced jazzer, the bass player has some cool tips on bass, and the rest all try to imitate the midwestern dude.

Muting issue but could be the resonance from the A string, too. This was one of the reasons I switched to floating thumb early on, as you’ll start to hear these tones crop up in wrong places, especially if you’re playing in a key like Bb or F
>>

>>
>>129418902
>How does this work exactly?
In Western harmony, relative keys are related, but if you play a V chord in A minor, it will be E minor (so it’s actually a v chord, not V7 - lowercase in classical harmony denotes minor).

Does this sound okay? Yes, but there’s no tritone and therefore it doesn’t have that much tension to resolve.

Classical harmony fixed this by sharping the 7th degree in the relative minor to create a dominant chord. That’s why we have the harmonic minor scale that’s different ascending and descending.

The solution is to relearn the rudiments. Three decades in, I still review the basics every few months or so. Once you nail those, advanced stuff tends to take care of its own.
>it’s also an ego boost to rip through stuff that once seemed “impossible”.

For example, I know I suck at violin. I must have gone over the same Suzuki and easy fiddle tunes 20 times over—and it almost seems like I get worse. But each reiteration, I can see things I overlooked or areas I improved. I can also properly gauge where I can learn new things to keep it interesting, but also hyper focus on what’s holding me back.

That being said, learning violin inadvertently helped me level up on viola. Here’s some shitty viola:

I never thought I would be so happy to own a Squier and a solid state Fender practice amp.

DeepSeek told me that it's a great first guitar, and I had to explain that I have had several guitars, I just sold my Player Telecaster before the end of 2024 because I liked looking at it, but didn't expect to pick it back up while my hands were still healing from wall punches.

Anyway, I highly recommend this guitar, and actually like hearing the built in overdrive on the amp blaring through headphones that I don't wear. Marshall MG10G amplifiers and Vox Pathfinder 10s are pretty good as well.

There he stood in his track suit, exuding the essence of funk with every moment.Time stood still with him, it was one of those days. Popeye chicken in one hand, whopper in the other.Destiny. Fate, it was instinct, it was his calling. After the proper amount of moment had passed, he wrote a letter to his band, "expression is to be shared not ensnared" he mumbled under his chicken addled breath, his beady shifty eyes completely absorbed by the words in front of him as he groaned and grunted articulating his frustrations between bites. Hours pass, the paragraph is written, the deed is done. Like silent clockwork he lifts himself and makes his way to the local guitar center. He walks in, cool and collected a determination fills the air, the funk exudes him, he is the center of attention. He makes a meaningless gesture at one of the salespeople and they just nod their head in quiet respect. All instruments stop as he heads for the Gibson section, they're movements paralyzed by such raw reverence of the presence before them. He picks up a 335 plugged straight into a Fender Twin and begins tuning it without even strumming it first, its innate at this point, he knows its out, he knows exactly where it needs to be. He finally strums it once, a simple E major chord, and then for the next 19 minutes the most sonically perfect blues performance erupts. Licks no ones heard before, phrasing so sharp you could shave with it, people start fainting and crying, everyone starts recording. Slowly he brings in more funk remedying the crowd as he begins to chicken neck with the notes, its simply electric. With a final strum he completes his set and says "Not bad, the one I have at home is better though" as he sets it down a low grumble begins to build, familiar, betraying, he can't hold it this is happening and its happening now. A deafening silence and then a loud wet schlort sprays the guitars on the wall with liquid feces, a highly pressurized spray breaking through the fabric.

I originally hated alt tunings because of having to constantly retune my shitty starter guitar. Then as I got better, it really doesn't make sense to sacrifice all my knowledge on non-standard tunings.
My friends who like alt tunings are some combination of not that good, don't know theory, or play twinkly math rock stuff that sounds the same in any tuning.
They have places if you're folk/slide players or have one-off songs but largely feel like a waste of time
>>
you goys writing this?
>>
>>129420231
I play mostly metal but I exclusively tune to E standard. Downtuning feels a bit like cheating since the fatness of the tone can carry a weak riff. If I can create crushing riffs in standard tuning it feels more effective somehow.
>>
Tell me your worst string change experience.
>>
>>129420416
alt tuning is only good if you don't want to use many fingers and/or you want to drone the top 2 strings.
i had a song written in the alt tuning and it was pretty good but because it's been a while i even forgot what the tuning i was in. was it normal turning but with G# on 3rd string?

Open/alternate tunings give you usable harmonics, for starters. You can also play decent clusters you won’t fine elsewhere, which can give you scale runs too. Open G (DGDGBD) gives you the ability to play things like the A and C between the top 3 open strings for a harp effect.

And for the record, I consider CSNY’s “Carry On” and other unison tunings to have unique timbres.

I had a one of those recent white Fender Duo-Sonics, with the string-thru bridge. I made a thread here of my guitar, and I cut off the strings and took off the neck. I put both in a backpack and rode my bike to my friend's house. When I got them out, I was too anxious to put the strings on, with shakes taking me after the ride. My friend said he could do it. So I got my new pack of flatwound 11s out of the backpack and handed it to him.

When he finished, I went to tune it, and 4/6 saddles in the bridge were flipped upside down.

Really nice. Reminds me of Donovan, or a children's TV show theme that shows stills of puppets or something.

P.S. my Squier doesn't have a skunk stripe with its non-maple fretboard. This makes sense to me... part of the allure.

Some use an attenuator or loadbox of some sort to run their amp at a beefy level and get the tubes fired up for good tone but have better control of the overall volume level.

Anybody have experience with a Tremol-no or similar product? I just want to set up my Floyd to dive-only so string breaks, string changes, and general tuning stuff is not such a pain in the ass.

I think you meant C Major. The difference is the tonal emphasis. If you play a C Major scale all over the neck but the bass player is just playing an A note all day long, it's going to sound like A Minor.

Currently at work doing major scales to a metronome 80 bpm. I was able to take the bass shape I know and apply it to the guitar. Going diagonally felt really good. Was able to play the scale up to the 15th fret. About to work on the first and open fret shape. Once I get that down I'll move into the minor scale shape. I like the tele and its comfortable in my hands but part of me wants to go back and check out some more guitars. I think i miss having a jazzmaster. I got the tele for 475. Think I'll see if I can find something near the 550-600 range.

I found an 11/10 perfect dedicated reverse delay pedal, this thing is amazing. Pushing the speed knob past 50% adds pitch shifting to the reverse. I’ve never been big on dedicated effects pedals like this but I use reverse reverb/delay more than any other type of mod so it justified giving it a shot, so glad I did.

I bought pic related for like 70 bucks on a whim because it had a cool sounding reverse delay effects. It was cheaper than a similar pedal I was eyeing but now I have a huge 100W head which is basically just a reverse delay that I will use once every blue moon, at least it looks kinda nice in my collection with the silver and carbon fiber optic. Distortion tones are a pile of shit, but it's also not too shabby on full clean mode.

I found out recently that the saying "You hate Teles until you don't" is very true.

I used to find them extremely ugly, but now I've been watching videos and testing guitars in shops for the past few weeks and I can't decide.

>>
>>129423988
I'm the resident Sire hater, so I'd advise against the Larry Carlton T7 New Gen.

The best guitar I have was a Squier Tele, but the Contemporary Telecaster HH range. The neck is so smooth, no sharp edges, every fret level, lovely 12 inch radius. I've read some reviews about shitty grounding on the new Contemporary Teles.
>>

why not at this point just bite the bullet and get a proper Mexican Fender Tele used for like 500 bucks? Cheapo shit is starting to come close to pro level used territory. Nowadays I cannot justify spending 400 bucks on some Sire which was almost half pre-COVID when I can find genuine Fender shit for a little more.

Chromatic scales with one finger per fret. Start on the low e string and get comfy playing each finger in sequence (1 2 3 4). once you feel confident in that, then move one fret down and start the sequence like that again. Try to get all the way down to the 1st fret - 4th fret.

The idea is that you go from what you can handle to slightly more difficult increments.

Easy:

1) spider exercise (it looks like an X)
>crosspick this shit
2) chromatic scales
>helps you determine your baseline for speed
3) string skipping
-> try one string away, then two, three, four, etc
>helps you feel distances between strings
4) play blindfolded
> helps give you a sense of the physicality of the instrument
5) ear training
-> find commercials and try to figure out the entire thing before it ends. Pause, rewind, figure it out.
> you should be able to come up with strategies to figure out music on the fly
USE THIS:
https://m.youtube.com/@80sCommercialVault/videos
6) all scales, all modes, entire neck
> don’t be a philistine, it’s not hard.
7) harmonics
>map all the pitches, pinch harmonics, and even artificial harmonics if you have the reach
8) space each finger
> instead of one finger one fret, get used to spacing each finger (very useful for three notes per string). Do all the combinations
9) economy picking
>all picking becomes economy picking at speed, so practice this shit slow
10) tapping
>experiment with all varieties (EVH, pick tapping, 8-finger, Preston Reed/Michael hedges shit)
11) slide
> because it’s easy as shit and sounds good. It should take you an hour to acquire this skill

It's not the power cable because there is a sort of small mechanical sound when I flip the power switch when it's plugged in. Sure, but I was never a natural. I just hit woodshed for one summer and was in jazz band the following semester. Four years later, I’m playing clubs in NYC
>I could play fast in just a few months, the articulation came from repetition
This is true.

The trick is to not be stupid and unwilling to accept new frames of thought. For example, I jam with this one young guy twenty years younger than me, but he gets butthurt when I tell him something like:
>“hey, don’t post your RH ring finger when you’re fingerpicking.”
“That’s the way I do this.”
>”yeah, but the reason you cant pick Nothing Else Matters is because the middle and ring are in the same tendon.”
“This works for me” (it doesn’t)

So yeah, let stupid people fail. More snizz and accolades for me

Yes. I learned how to sweep pick on acoustic by doing the same simple loop, no joke, for twelve hours in the forest of Olympia, WA. My knuckles hurt like hell, but it was like a speedrun.
>then the shadow people came out

I also wrote 9,000 words in one sitting for one of my books a week prior.
>this felt like shadow demon perched on my shoulder

One insight that was surprising was that speed and hydration of your body go hand in hand (big pun intended). Think about cramps and fatigue, as well as the librication from your hands. On speed, I could smell the strings corrode in real-time and the waft of the acoustic’s glue.

All in all, it was a spiritual experience and I ended up getting giardia from a weakened immune system. Four raw cloves of garlic later, the sweeppicking was worth all the farts.

Is it any wonder I'm tired?
Is it any wonder that I feel uptight?
Is it any wonder I don't know what's right?

Switching noise is normally relays and probably doesn't tell us a lot. You need plate voltage and filament voltage. Once you have those two and bias, you try to shoot audio out the back end.

I don't know if there's any in the house and I'm not gonna wake anyone up to ask. I'm just gonna grin and bear it, I really don't feel like getting off my ass anymore. Even if the shit is pulsing. Fuck.

I practiced a few leads today and one song with chords. Leads went okay. My ear is having trouble going from listening for the bass to the guitar. I'm unintentionally losing the guitar and going to the bass out of habit. This time around it's feeling more fun to play guitar. Last year I'm not sure why but whenever I tried playing I wasn't enjoying it.

Hah. Let it build. I probably won't be able to play for a while though.

You can get a small aloe plant in a garden center for a couple bucks. They are very easy to grow and propagate in pots. They are friendly medicinal plants that will save your ass in times like these.

Will see if there's any tomorrow and if I'll need it. I usually don't bother with that sort of stuff so it's never on my mind. I do appreciate the advice though.
