My retired father, with well over a million bucks in the bank, decided he wanted a guitar recently. Never played one, but I got him a P bass for Christmas and it awakened something in him.
He calls me the other day;
>holy crap, I was looking for guitars online, and a bunch of ones I liked are almost a thousand dollars!
Uh yeah it's not the 60s anymore, pops.

He SHOULD get a Les Paul just to flex on me, but he's probably gonna get a Squier strat. Which is cool, but c'mon. Treat yo'self.

Buy tools that inspire. Don't let the value get in the way of having a good experience. Too cheap and poorly setup, it's a bear to play. Too expensive and pampered, you'll lose interest because you don't have chops or have to worry about damaging it.

Got myself an acoustic guitar for the first time earlier this week. I learned to play exclusively on electric guitars though hadn't played for years, over the past 6 months I've picked up playing again and improving with my gf's Gretsch. I've always wanted an acoustic, and a guitar to call my own again so decided to get myself a cheap Eko Ranger VI, and it has sounded great, and up until today I had been pleasantly surprised with its sound considering how cheap it was. Unfortunately, this morning I heard it fall over in the other room and hit the floor with a bang. It seemed fine at first, but now the first fret buzzes and makes a cacophony of reverberation when played. It's the worst on the E, A, and D and is not as noticeable on G,B,E. It is not present when the strings are played open, and it decreases in buzziness the further away from fret 1 you get; by the fifth fret it's not noticeable. What do you think the problem is? I've got Amazon prime bringing me an Allen key tomorrow to try adjusting the neck, so hopefully that will help but if not, any thoughts?
>>
>>129463630
How do I come up with better bass lines? Is there some shape or progression that helps with it?

I want to get a Russian big muff v7 but I cant even play a chord yet.

It depends on whether it serves the song. Like, the slinky bassline from Heaven 17 fits the frenetic speed of 80’s excess. It also has contour, going from low to high that works with the pauses in the vocals. In essence, the bassline works as a hook.

Conversely, another good bassline is Metronomy’s “The Bay” which is a dead simple line, but the staccato notes fit the refined air that the song is going for.

https://youtu.be/9PnOG67flRA

Personally, I like basslines that push the envelope and aren’t just roots. One of my favorite lines is actually a keyboard line from The Dismemberment Plan, but you’ll see that it nails that melancholy really well:

I love DmP that whole album is amazing. I think the problem with my lines i try and improvise is not knowing if my bass line is currently pushing the song or not. I'm trying to learn how to not play the root all the time because moving away can sound cool but knowing the right way to move around once you're away is the hard part for me

Yeah it’s a great album. Perfect for cold November walks alone.

You can usually do a riff-based line, which is usually repeated. Or there’s a glue-like line, which melds all the other elements together. Others can be chordal, which is rare but see Jaco and Chris Squire.

The most common notes are octaves, 5ths, or b7th lines. Listen to Boz Scaggs “Lowdown” and hear how simple it is, but that high fill serves as a way of signaling to the listener that the phrases is repeating. It’s also anticipatory, as the high A is part of the second A chord, but the D -> E hammer on sets up the E pedal.(It changes up a little bit, omitting the A from slime to slime):

a big muff is a good first pedal. get a RAT too. they sound amazing together. learn how to play a chord though ffs
>>
Stop relying on amp distortion. Play clean and learn how to gain stage
>>
>>129464329
i don't know what this means. gain staging and amp distortion are not mutually exclusive. your amp distortion is one of your gain stages
>>
>>129464329
i h8 when it sounds so distorted it gets in the way of the melody.
>>
>>129464313
I had one of those for bass for a bit. That was a good one too. I'll check out reverb for it. Im working on learning chord shapes. I won't be able to bar chords for a long time so I'm just gonna do my best in trying to learn what I can for now. My friend who plays guitar says you don't even need to know how to bar to play chords good. So learning open chord positions is the first thing I'm doing once I'm comfortable with scales

This is a hard truth to accept because playing feels really fun sometimes but yeah growth always happens away from the instrument. loosen the strings and put the guitar on the counter. put one hand on the bottom edge and use your other to gently push up and down on the end of the headstock. you should see it flexing. you can try this to see if the truss rod is stuck in the channel. you’ll hear some gentle popping if it is.

>>
>>129472069
>caged system is just the major scale started on different strings
No it’s not.

The CAGED system is just understanding the most common open chord shapes and how they can be moved around the guitar. Start with these basic chords;
>Cmajor
>Aminor
>Gmajor
>Eminor
>Dmajor

These are the basic chords form in guitar. Most can be made major or minor, but some don’t work well with open strings. The idea is that if you know that the location of these chords, they can be moved around the guitar (and you may have to use your first finger as a capo).

For example, If you move a Gmajor (320033) chord pattern up to Bb (3fretsup), you can find the Eb and F chords in that position (which were originally C and D, respectively). However, if you play without that first finger capo, open strings need to be muted or selected for consonance. This is noticeable with the aforementioned Bbmajor chord as:
> (320033 pattern -> 650066)
as compared to
>(320003 pattern -> 650006)
The second pattern has a B natural against the Bb. The same goes for the Ebmajor (originally x32010), which a unison open G and an E natural (x65040).

Where CAGED shines is moving these chord fragments around or using it with a capo in unfamiliar keys. The above example of Bb works for Big Star’s “Seventeen”, whereas the moveable pattern against open strings is really useful in a single like Led Zeppelin’s “Over the Hills and Far Away”, right before the electric guitars come in (it’s a Dmajor CAGED chord).

There, I saved you hours. Please donate to your local slime bank and help these n/gg/as out
>>
>>129472309
CAGED isn't for playing chords anon, its for melody. you really are retarded. the chords are just where the shapes come from
>>
>>129472273
>They are not worth the trouble.
Might as well sell me the Louisiana Purchase.

They are also good for jams because most people can’t play them worth dick. I used to play mine in Open C and that thing was the voice of God.
>>
>>129472315
>you really are retarded.
The only one retarded is your mom when she chose not to abort you in the toilet bowl.

Scale patterns are for melody. I have never used caged for melody because the scale has all notes in the key. Unless I’m doing chord melody, holding down shapes and putting melody notes in between is inferior to seeing the scale. And if you need this system to find out where the root of a scale is, it’s already too late. To illustrate this, where is a G on the B string? Can you build it from the root in open position?

Now, I understand the CAGED pattern for a particular chord - for example, finding Gmajor in the CAGED forms:

[form -> root note location]
>C -> 10th fret A
>A -> 10th fret A
>G -> 3rd fret E
>E -> 3rd fret E
>D -> 5th fret D

If you combine those chord patterns WITH scale patterns, THEN you can play melodies with ease.

I enjoy playing electric guitar unplugged, but it ruins technique like pressing too hard and not properly muting strings which produces unwanted noise that's only noticeable with distortion.

>129472240
To be perfectly honest I first need a new guitar because the old one was never playable to begin with and now costs more to repair and set up than the price I bought it for.

Alas, it seems like with each passing year all models get more expensive but qualitatively worse with next to no one around for a good setup. Is the guitar market doomed?

I'm looking for maximum playability, like I've been struggling with just basic power chords for years because my wrist tires and hurts easily and I've seen all the videos about not pressing too hard, using the pinky instead of the ring finger, keeping the wrist straight, but then my fingers can't spread far enough.

So how playable is like a 60's vintera mustang nowadays? Also ashamed that apparently I can't do what little Japanese girls can do.

>>
>>129473381
apologies, I just had the best P-bass in mind and forgot about the 24 frets lmao.
BB sadly only comes in 20/21 frets.
Warwick and Spector are the kings of 24 fret p-basses, unless you want to go into giga boutique wankery like Fodera or Adamovic.
>>
>>129473411
damn that sucks. I would’ve really loved a 24 fret bb
>>
>>129473416
I mean the precision bass sucks in the upper register anyways, which is why barely anybody has ever built one with 24 frets unless they added another pickup to make it more functional again. There's lots of P-J basses that fit your requirements but they've all been Spector knock-offs because he did it first.
If you got Kiesel money I would highly suggest going for Spector instead, Kiesel basses aren't as well regarded as their guitars and you can get something out of this world if you pick one of the specialized bass makers instead. Warwick has the streamer and the fortress if you don't like the look of spectors and they're just as great since they stole the design from Spector and got sued for it.
>>
>>129473479
appreciate the advice. Yamaha makes a Nathan East model with 24 frets but I don’t want a 5 string. I thought it would be fun to mess around with but I guess I’ll just stick to a regular P.
