Installed some compensated saddles on my tele. Also managed to set the whole thing up for the first time. Kept the old strings on and just moved them aside to get it done.

What is considered "good" intonation? I managed to get every string without 0-5 cents of pitch. I'm reading most people try to get within 3, but idk with a tele.

Gonna go get new strings because these were the ones that came on the guitar when it was delivered to me. Since i'm just starting out on this shit what's a good guage to start with? should i just stick with 09-42?

Because restringing a 12 string Rickenbacker is like an hour affair, intonating and tuning takes forever, they’ve got narrow fretboards which makes 12s very crowded (unless you buy one of the few models with wider fretboards), and the 6s are just all around easier to work on and play snd still get the signature Rick jangle. Rick 12s are nice to get when you’ve already got a Rick 6, and with a 6 you can already closely emulate the 12 sound with modern pedals without dealing with any of the cons of an actual 12.

Can some of the more senior players chime in?

Im wondering about the benefits of fingerstyle vs pick.

On one end, you have dudes like Matteo Mancuso who can play insane lines that easily transition between tremolo, legato, economy, classical, tapping, etc.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j8OsuhTDufw&pp

Cons: tone is a little dull compared to a pick. Pinch harmonics seem way harder this way. Probably near impossible to play songs like Bleed with wild picking patterns.

On the other end, you have dudes like Spiro Dussias who mainly use a pick. He can play tighter rhythmic sequences, play faster than Matteo, and his tone is much sharper.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3mzDPF5230M&pp

Wondering if I should dedicate some more time to finger style. Im decent with a pick, can play some Malmsteen songs, some Marty and Kiko solos. I wonder if I should just stick with a pick and focus more on harmony than technique.

For the record, I'm mid 20s. So I'll never get to Matteo or Spiro's levels. But ngl, i feel like if I put 5 years into Finger-style i could probably get to an exceptional level. But it would be at the cost of not becoming better with a pick.
>>
>>129599408
Just do what feels comfortable. I like to hold a pick between my thumb and index but also use my middle finger for hybrid picking. I spent the first ten years or so of playing using only fingers 90% of the time and when I started regularly using the pick I had a hard time going back and forth because the other always felt more comfortable than whatever one I was currently playing. I had to almost re train my right hand. I’d either stick to whatever you’re doing or if you want to play with fingers stick with that, don’t jump back and forth and lose progress of both while you decide what you want to do.
>>
>>129599408
Why would you not just practice both?
>>
>>129599559
because theyre fundamentally different and why divide your stats when you could be min maxxing
>>
>>129599598
I think it would be better to be versatile enough to play 90% of anything, picked or fingerstyle, than to be able to play 100% of picked and only 50% of fingerstyle, or vice versa.

>>
>>129599559
I could practice one more and get better at it. But I could use that time to practice other concepts like harmony which arguably may be more useful.

I think Ill stick with pick and mess around with fingerstyle a bit. But i thought about it and I'd rather sound like Dimebag than Mancuso.

>realize you can fit the E, D, and A minor Pentatonics scales and their relative major scales (G, F, C)
>start with E, add in the extra notes from C Major, use the Pentatonics as guide tones, Phrygian unlocked. Move around the root to play Phrygian in any key
>Do the same with the other minor modes (Dorian, Aeolian), just fill out the extra notes around the Pentatonics

Kek. Microtones are only palatable when they are used on top of the western equal temperament system as an accent (think the first bend in cliffs of dover) or when used with the same symmetry (think mononeon)

You are lying to yourself if you think middle eastern microtonal slop sounds good.

>>129600919
You are probably right, I've had many experiences where I listed to a song and hated it, came back and listened again and loved it. But at the same time, I just dont bite that these systems are as harmonically rich as the 12 tone system. Many of these systems dont have complex chord progressions like you find in western music. Ive never heard something as satisfying as the Creep chord progression in these systems. It just seems like a total waste of time to me

Thanks anon. I forgot about ESP, too. I was also considering mid tier Epiphones, like the 50s or 60s standard Les Paul. Not sure where they're made, but Google says it's China wood.
>>
>>129601179
epiphones are still pretty good and made in china but ironically most guitar factories moved out of china because the labor was getting too high/skilled. most wood is going to be sourced wherever it’s found, so for mahogany it’s going to be Africa or Central America. problem you’ll run into there is if they just buy the cheapest binned materials they can and don’t store or dry them correctly. a legitimate guitar factory will let them air dry for a year or two if they don’t roast them.
>>
>>129600943
I wish more people bought Danelectros. They’re cheap but they’re still really good. They don’t pretend to be anything they’re not: reissues of cheap guitars from 60-70 years ago that retain the same quirks as the originals. I’ve never come across one that wasn’t at the very least acceptable out of the box, never any fret or nut issues and always 100% playable.

a wangler bar can do a portamento and faux gliss as well, which calling a wangler bar a vibrator/vibrolar would be an equally inaccurate as describing one as at tremoloid

>Cold air intakes (CAI) for Ferrari GTD/GT3 race cars (like the 488 or 296) typically use carbon fiber housings to draw dense, cold air from outside the engine bay (e.g., via specialized scoops or fender vents), reducing heat soak and increasing airflow for improved combustion and consistent power. These systems, such as those from ARMASPEED, are designed for maximum efficiency and often feature heat shielding to minimize performance loss from high-temperature race environments

brazilian rosewood is reddish brown, it's pretty light.
indian rosewood is purplish brown and pretty dark, sometimes there will be streaks of yellow-ish-tan in it..
All manufacturers dye their boards to make it a lot darker.
Old brazilian boards are super dark from decades of oxidation+oil.
There is no fresh rosewood that's all super dark. People act like this is some sort of choice rosewood that builders or manufacturers use for the choice stuff...it's just dyed.

Good and bad news, my friends.
Bad news: my Squier Classic Vibe 60s Custom Telecaster arrived with 3 grey smudges under the clearcoat.
Good news: the store called their distributor and ordered a replacement. They should send me an email about the replacement's arrival tomorrow, or Wednesday (the 11th).

They let me hold onto this one "so [I] have something to play". I'll be getting the same make, model, finish... I just hope for more consideration to the quality control.

I got an Epiphone ES-335 Pro in December 2012, and it was a used, returned example of the instrument. The F holes wound up having this terrible black paint on them, and on the front of it. Just crazy lookin'. But it was over the clearcoat, and scraped off with my thumb.

Anywho-- here's the guitar I got.
& here's to the guitar I get.
>>
>>129604359
I'd have to design it in CAD

Feels terrific. Gotta admit, for me, a guy who hasn't had a guitar since around November 2024, the electronics are just fantastic. I had her set up with flatwounds... 11s; and it just plays so smooth. I still haven't tuned down to Eb standard but I have played with the bridge pickup a bit. Note-- I only have a Fender Frontman 10G. Fun fact: it's not a terrible partnership for the instrument. Not in my tiny living quarters.

Bridge pickup with gain O.D. maxed and volume around 1, I can comfortably play around with snarl. The low end really changes definition with the tone knob. Can't say I dislike the thing, but it is a little pricey. Still, if one of y'all is in the market for a Squier, and can drop over $700 Canadian, this would be a top notch starter kit. It has a nice clean, too.

yo /gg/. i have an old 97 ibanez edb400 bass guitar i bought from some guy on craigslist years ago. after a few years of neglect i got it cleaned and setup properly. realizing that the guy who sold it to me said he upgraded the pickups. come to find out the idiot never had springs/foam under the pickups and they've been super far away from the strings the entire time i've owned it. it appears to be some bartolini set literally just bare blocked into the fucking thing. the neck pickup also has short ass fucking screws and i nearly stripped the threads inside the wood trying to makeshift a piece of foam underneath and trying to get it to catch. i'm thinking fuck that. should i just buy a set of pickup screws with the springs? should make my life fairly easy after that i think. am i missing something or is this as easy as it sounds?
>>
>>129605049
It’s about as easy as it sounds. Screws with surgical tubing instead of springs has worked better for me. Just make sure you’re not drilling through the body.
>>
>>129605074
surgical tubing will eventually offgas and dryrot
>>
>>129605074
you don’t use springs or tubing for body mount pickups. those are pickups mounted into rings or a pickguard
>>
>>129605425
direct mount pickups use foam underneath for height adjustment. so either way, there should be a way to adjust the height on them regardless of springs or not. i also don't think this is a cohesive set of pickups. so i think the neck pickup just sitting directly in the cavity with no means of adjusting and sitting over a quarter of an inch away from the strings isn't really helping me out much. something needs to get done about it.
>>
>>129605471
cut up a kitchen sponge and put underneath it. if the screws are too short you’ll have order longer ones
>>
>>129605049
I got a similar problem on my washburn, but I dont want ro restring my bass and ruin my tone. The d string broke 3 years ago and it took like a month for the tone to recover on that string. Luckily my lower pickup is in working order, I would get a new bass but none of the ones available in my area look as cool, and none of them have as many frets. What I really want is a true longscale bass
>>
>>129605532
take a capo on the first fret and loosen the strings enough to pull them out of the way enough to get the pickup out of the pocket. that's what i did when i discovered that the fucking bullshit was empty. wasn't about to undo and put a whole new fresh set on.
>>129605515
ktichen sponges need to be moist for them to have the properties of foam i need. not worth it really.

i also have pieces of foam that are dense enough to do what i want to and i would just get some 1.4-1.5 inch pickup screws to do the job.

or i could go to fucking guitar center and trade this pos in for something else. i honestly considering it if it weren't for the fact that the fucking bartolini pickup in the thing wasn't worth basically what i paid the bass for.

I loved this guitar, but the finish flaws got me irked. The QC is just not up to par. The set up i got from the store was great and playability is terrific, but the finish... grey smudges under the clearcoat. Irritating.

I have warmed up to the amp albeit. A tiny Fender Frontman 10G. I can turn the volume knob near entirely off and get a nice room sound by maxing the overdrive gain. The Classic Vibe 60s Custom Telecaster pickups sound like I was hoping.

It's a cool thing to make sounds.

That's why you disregard any of that "vintage" or "traditional" shit and get the improved modern solutions. It baffles my mind that people settle for the objectively inferior solution just because it's traditional. This with guitars, bear in mind. It's nothing essential or significant, yet they insist on it because of tradition. Imagine what other vile shit those people do in the name of tradition. A "modern" (it's not even modern, guitars have had those for half a century) solution with a saddle per string is the superior choice. My Tele has those and you can get it spot on with those (disregarding the imperfections when you fret harder or softer or pick differently).

As for strings, if you haven't already tried different sizes, do exactly that. Get at least a standard set of 9s and 10s or perhaps even 11s. Then if you'd like minor tweaks to how the tension feels, go for different subsets of those. You can use D'Addario's string tension calculator to see how big the difference in tension is for their strings.
My chug guitar has 11s and my standard one has 9,5. There's no difference in tone, don't let others tell you that it sounds "thicker" (watch comparisons on YouTube for example). The feel is different though. Perhaps it's not even the thickness which I feel, but the higher tension. I don't bend much, but it feels stiffer. Even when downtuning, I can't imagine how stiff/tight the 11s would feel if I tuned up to E standard.
>>
>apparently you can only re-fret a neck so many times (a couple of times)
>can only level frets once or twice
