Swapping back and forth between my LP and my Rick and the knobs are tripping me out, one guitar is volume tone for one pickup on the top knobs and volume tone for the other on the bottom and the other guitar is both pickups tone on top and both pickups volume on the bottom. I ended up "finishing" the guitar theory book. Played along to everything on the audio CD most of it was 20 seconds short clips of just a chord something. The whole book was just stuff I'm already in process of learning so I didn't gain that much from it. Now I'm going back to guitar method. I will maybe eventually go back to stuff I failed in this book but for now I'm just gonna move forward.

Yeah I dont ever expect someone to ask me to play something from the books I'm learning from, they're more for getting the fundamentals down like reading or maybe they have a good exercise in them. On bass I've done almost no book work. I really got into the books when it came to guitar since picking up and playing isn't as easy as bass. Even now I'm still fumbling over chords as I try to move them around, fingers still blocking strings when I go to make chords and I'm not ever going to attempt barre chords. I started picking on bass just so I keep getting practice with picks so I can play guitar better. I think it's been helping, up and down strokes back to back seems easy but is kinda hard at the start. I've been playing guitar more than bass since I got back into it so my motivation is there. I just wish I had more songs that I know already that I could play along to.

"barre chords", If you can play the E major chord and an A major chord, you can play an unbelievable amount of chords using the barred index finger. So don't give up on that. It's not that hard to do. Also, simply taking off certain fingers changes those major chords into minor chords (same basic core shapes) or even 7th chords. It really is the holy grail of guitar. So seriously, don't ever say never...because you're like THIS FUCKING CLOSE to getting really good. It's like you're 9/10ths of the way climbing Mount Everest. Just go the last 1/10 of the way and you'll be at the top...

There are millions of videos on YouTube talking about barre chords. I'd highly suggest you watch and play with some of them. Just find someone you like and vibe with. It's a game changer...

Okay fair enough. Just pay attention to the E major chord and the A major chord. Those are your babies. And for the record, any of the open chords can become barre chords...that simply means they are ALL movable up the neck. Some are way harder than others to play and you'll probably not ever use them but you can if you need to.

See your open chord shape for a D Major for example, can literally be slid up the neck but you have to refinger your usual fretted fingers (basically same shape but use different pressing fingers) so you can incorporate your index finger to be the BARRE (it's basically creating a temporary nut - that plastic or bone piece where all your strings are sitting on top of by the tuning pegs). So really barre chords are just cheat codes to your open chords.

When people start out learning their open chords and then barre chords, they learn them in the wrong order in my opinion. If the two very first chords you ever learned were E minor and A minor, your life would become much easier because when introducing your barre finger (the index finger), you can begin to learn power chords (just 3 of the 6 strings are fretted) and you can really begin to rock out like AC/DC or other rock musicians and their songs.

So ya, open chords are where to start. Then learn the E minor chord, then the A minor chord. Then look into power chords and then start to worry about the barre chords. Barre chords are only hard because they require you using your arm and hand grip in an unfamiliar fashion. PUSH YOUR ARM FORWARD AND OUTWARD...like physically at the elbow like you're going to elbow someone in the face. It's all in the way you use your hand positioning...

There are barre chord tips videos on YouTube too. Highly recommend them. They will simply tell you about hand and arm positioning and repeat what I just said...so you can see it for yourself. Also, watch the creases of your index finger. simply move your finger higher up or even off the string.

I know, it's dumb. They should high level the whole concept right away when learning barre chords...like this is what you're aiming for down the road kind of thing. Because you’ve played bass, your finger strength should be developing. That’s good, because it takes more time if you’re starting from scratch.

Here’s what no one is telling you:

Yes they are. When I play guitar, I use barre chords and their variations 60% of the time. Focus on them.

I used those hand stretchers to no real discernible effect other than making my knuckles hurt. I had a bit of an arthritic pinky and had a wrist injury from repetitive stress (3+ hours/day practice, including ensembles) so I recommend you just do mindless exercises until fatigue.

You basically don't look at the people but you look through them, kinda glaze your eyes or don't focus on them but on the wall or the bar or whatever the fuck is behind them. This way you don't catch them making fuck faces at you which will crack you up and throw you off.

I hate playing in front of others too. It freaks me the fuck out. But I've done it before and I didn't screw up. So ya, you just need to practice your songs and keep your eyes either on your guitar, on the floor in front of you or on some place on the wall or whatever so it doesn't throw you off.

It all starts somewhere. Is there a guitar meetup group in your town/city/area that you can meet other peeps your skill level and/or age that share your musical tastes? Age isn't such a big deal but musical tastes is and same with skill level. Beginners can get to non-beginner really quickly. Pick some songs that are easy to play but catchy and familiar that you like. I'd pick 3 to begin. Learn them inside and out. Learn the words...like if you can't sing the song or say the words out loud (if you can't sing) from start to finish, you don't know the song. So that's rule number 1. Then once you can recite the words by heart, now try and play the chords, then try and incorporate fills & riffs and or solo stuff.

Anyhow, yes you can definitely do it. And you'll feel amazing once you accomplish it. But your confidence is rooted in your practice. More practice, more confidence. It's that simple. PS, when practicing, record yourself. Listen to it. Critique yourself.

It may take a while to get here but I'd also suggest looking at some local bars for their open mic/jam sessions. Certain days like Mon through Wed people don't usually go out to very much so they're kind of dead. These are good days to get up in front of humans and try your chops. Not too many eyes on you. Thrs-Sat are the nights these bars make their money so you probably don't want to try out for those levels yet. Sundays can be hit or miss usually and are usually pro level people jamming/playing. Same with Sat afternoon jams. Pro players play on Fri night/Sat nights.

TL;DR Find out if any local bars or cafes have open mike sessions. Go watch, get to know people and make connections.

Live performance is nerve-wracking until you do it so much that you almost develop animosity towards an audience. You’ll first deal with shaking knees and you may bomb at an open mic, but you will feel the “I did it!” euphoria that is also present afterwards. That euphoria fades, but it is replaced with confidence.

When I toured, I LOVED blowing people off stage and decimating the minds of the local yokels.

Charisma is really about giving people what they want. For example, one joke/non-sequitur I’d always say on stage to win over an audience is “everybody gets laid tonight!” (It’s a Rodney Dangerfield quote). Or, I’d say absurd things, such as “this next song cures gout and makes your coffee taste better”. I also encouraged hecklers because we’d have songs that needed audience participation, so you can turn that energy to your advantage. how much can a bad amp affect bass tone, compared to technique?
i only own a shitty promethean 20 watt amp and when i play it, it sounds really boomy and like there is this ugly sustain. however, it can also output to heaphones, and when i do that, my playing sounds way cleaner.
i can't tell if my technique is at fault here and i should learn better muting, or would a quality amp sound more like the headphone output of this amp. which is more likely?

It is hard to find people to play with. I got lucky with knowing my friend who plays drums. Luckily even though I'm on my 2nd year of bass it's not hard to pick a key and jam. The funny part is that the group has slowly grown to 4 solid people who show up but then we have others. However before anyone comes, people ask me if it's okay to bring along someone else. I guess because the sessions are literally only happening because I ask to jam. My drumming friend, guitarist and bongo player live together but only jam when I come over. I work with autistic people. Im a live in assistant for my main client. He has a job, drives and has an active life. I only see him in the morning when he gets ready for work then leaves around 615. During that first hour I'm up, I don't do anything with him, besides make sure he gets himself ready for work. So I'll usually try to do some music when I wake up. Then I have 2nd client i get ready for school from 7-830. Once his bus gets him I'm off until 300 when I get my 3rd from his school then hang with him until his mom gets home. After that I'm off for the day. I have so much free time that I will end up spending more time on my hobbies than my job. I only made 49k last year so it's not a high paying job. I forgot to add: my first serious band at 19 that played CBGBs, L’Amours Rocks was from finding former school classmates at a local pay-to-play open mic. They needed a bass player and we used to play lacrosse.

The stakes are higher and people want to perform well. Ambitious people are a good way to go.

Busking, I’d form ersatz bands with whoever I could find. People playing spoons and a handful of change as percussion was as challenging as Quebecois jazz violinists on a trust fund (dude was good). Don’t think of bands are solid entities, be the band and slap some beta males into shape to do your bidding. Arthoes are better for this purpose, of course.

1000% technique, I have a 2 x 12" bass rig with tons of pedals and all the bells and whistles but I also practise in quiet on a 6" cheap orange crush guitar amp I have next to my computer when I just want to play stuff to get my fingers moving or learn a song without having all my walls shake.
I have to crank the bass and cut just about all other frequencies on that thing to make it work on bass and I sound impeccable on it.

If your Promethean is boomy that's most likely just you not muting properly, which can also mean you are muting when you shouldn't since improper muting (especially with the picking hand palm on the bridge) can cause your playing to be boomy as hell and drown out all the other tone.
Your headphones are probably not very bass heavy and simply cut out all the boomy mud hence why it sounds "cleaner" there.

TLDR: I am 99% sure your problem won't get fixed with a different amp by the way you are describing it.
