>tube amp
turn up gain knob until desired level of gritty, but pleasing sounding saturation. if you need to play harder or have too much gain, just turn the volume knob on the instrument down slighty, tone is preserved.
>solid state amp
keep turning up gain/drive, start to hear tiny bit of saturation. play slightly harder, full blown distortion. turn gain knob up slightly, full blown distortion but just less audible than if the gain knob was up more. turn gain knob down slightly, no saturation at all.
am i retarded or is this how this shit actually functions in a practical application? seems like if i went solid state i would just skip the drive circuit entirely and run a fuzz pedal

push your lips out and pretend you just seen a nice ass, you can whistle blowing out and breathing in, about the force you would use to gently blow a tissue off a table, the size and shape of the hole determines the pitch, keep manipulating your lips until you hear a note.

You can also whistle with your teeth but its a lot harder and doesn't sound musical its more for getting someones attention or pretending to be the pedophile from family guy

Damn L.A is getting lit. I'll let all you fags in on a Locals Only secret. The 1720 is becoming the premiere spot for extreme metal in L.A. All the trust fund fags are scared of going there and legitimate talented bands haunt that spot. Yes it's surrounded by human homeless filth but ive never had a problem there. And I know and am cool with the set the black security is from. Good venue gets too hot though. For rich kids the location is jarring next to a graffiti ed freeway amd homeless tents and "homes" rats the size of cats. Lmao this ain't Hollywood dumb bitch. But the shows and bands are killer everytime. And the homeless never fuck with the cars here. Too much retaliation. We dont respect the homeless in L.A if youre native born to L.a . Always the flyover tourists that get filtered out eventually. Belphegor is playing tonight there at the 1720.

I'm talking mostly about the neck and the body. I replaced the hardtail bridge for a vibrato unit because I love surf music. To me it's sort of a Ship of Theseus situation where I want to keep it whole. Although now I'm starting to just let go and maybe save the neck to turn it into a fretless or something like that.

Sorry for the long blogpost
and the reddit link
, but I also want to ask any anons' opinions on 24" vs 24.75" scale in terms of feel (my other electric is an ibanez asr70, but I can't really compare them since the necks are so different thickness wise). I've had this bookmarked for 3-4 years and I've always been curious about this: https://www.reddit.com/r/offset/comments/i8m8e8/

Recording sound wise and how it might sound to other people in the room modelers are now on par with valve amps - provided the one fiddling with the controls know what they're doing. Playing valve amps compared to some modelers and SS amps, the slight difference you might perceive is the dynamic range and the "sag" when you're playing the valve amp with the master quite high up.

I'm more interested in feel than the sound really, I've heard a lot of talk about immediacy and response and that kind of thing. Then again guitar players tend to be full of shit. I've been fairly satisfied with my gear so far, good enough for practice anyway, but I've been just wondering if I've been missing out. Starting to seem silly that I've been playing for so long and have never played "the real thing".
>>

Modelers are on par to people who don't care about tone, aren't playing, and after someone spends hours tweaking the settings to your rig. Good equipment sounds better and naturally responds. As long as you don't have graphic eqs and a ton of push pull switches, dialing in tube stuff takes one to two minutes. You can do it on the fly.

The more space your music gives for guitar to breathe, the more a great, "on par," or shitty tone is going to flex.

>>
>>129641020
In my specific use case, gear and experience yes there is a difference "feel wise" between a tube amp combo and the quad cortex I'm using through it (via 4 cable method through the same amp). Sound wise can be too specially when I'm using the valve amp a bit louder at it's 50 watt mode (in favor of the tube). But at low "I don't wanna bother anyone else" volumes the difference in sound and feel between the two is squashed to negligible; daresay even favoring the modeller since I can shape how bright or squashed it can sound like compared to the tube amp which sounds meh at those levels.
If you'll be able to make the valve amp work close to it's "intended" volume (obviously a tiny princeton had a specific use case in mind compared to some big ass 100 watt marshall).
You'll just be disappointed trying to get joy out of a big amp + 4x12 in a small apartment with neighbors.

TLDR there is some feel difference, and if you're getting one make sure the wattage/speaker size and count appropriate to your usual use case.

Now I'm pondering whether to spend 400$ on fret leveling and crowning equipment or to pay someone 200$ to fix it once. Buying the stuff means I can fix my "future guitars", but I would also need to practice on some guitars or potentially ruin my guitar in the process.

>want to finally break through my plateau
>can't find anything because i'm obsessed with being thorough and comprehensive

I gave up on the comprehensive part. Identifying one area to work on and finding a good resource is what I settled for. Learning the major scale and all of its shapes was something
that I have been putting off for 20 years. I played by learning the scale's notes and just playing them across the neck. Learning shapes is faster and doesn't require memorization and feels more systematic.

This book was a breakthrough. His way of showing you why those shapes are constructed that way is worth gold. The simple realization of how half-steps and steps look when played across strings is the most simple, yet most important thing. I was able to construct the 5 shapes by using the root note positions and now I'm practicing them.

I have the major scale shapes and triads (major and minor) across the 4 string groups. I guess I should also learn the minor scale shapes, that's the next chapter in the book. The more I learn, the longer my practice routine gets. I think I won't come off with less than 30 minutes of practicing a day. It's kinda difficult when I need to wind down after work and when I should also spend 30 minutes practicing the piano.

https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/media/images/decibel-chart.01.16kh_DFE.jpg

If you're worried about your ears just keep your exposure to sounds at 90dBSPL under an hour a day. Dunno if the phone spl meters these days are accurate enough for that, but as a general rule if you have to raise your voice to have a conversation then that's loud and you'd want to A. Limit exposure time or B. Reduce volume

A 1 watt tube amp might be loud enough to damage your hearing over time (years) if it's cranked through high sensitivity speakers. I only say might as I don't quite recall how loud my broken 1 watt Laney cub's mode could be through a v30 speaker, but it's thinny and not that loud through it's natural 10 inch built in speaker.

If you're asking if there would be a difference in your current modeling/ss set up feel wise vs a 1 watt valve amp.. maybe? Depends how much headroom the tube amp you wanna get has. If its 1 watt through 10 inch speakers.. I can guess not much.

I just calculated everything using mid-range products and it costs 446€. It's something you buy for life, but how many guitars does a normal person own in their life? Assuming that one professional fret-job is 200€, that's two you can get for the price of tools. Therefore, if someone plans to work on 3 guitars, it has already paid itself off. But I'm not taking into account knowing how to work with it. Chances are I will ruin 1 or 2 guitars before I know how to use it.

I practice in my head all the time. When you get to decades of playing a myriad of instruments, you do it automatically.
>transcribing the beeps in Chik Fil A
>thinking of the nastiest chord progressions
>doing odd time subdivisions against my turn signal clicks
>reharmonizing songs in my head
>transposing chord progressions of known songs out of daydreaming
After a certain amount of time, you realize that chops can be restrained in 3 days of 2hour practice, harmonic knowledge never leaves you.

I used to try to max out practice when I was young, but 8-hr practice sessions feels like a job that doesn’t get you pussy. Even with bands, unless you’re working in jamming, anything more than 3-hours for working in your set(s) is a waste

adhd has been my biggest asset as a musician my brain will literally never shut the fuck up
theres a little guy in there humming along to whatever song i've been practicing lately

>>
>>129644129
Agreed senpai. I think there’s an archetype of musician that’s endlessly creative. I remember creative tests that would ask you for all the uses for a brick, and I’d write at least 50 when they asked for 10. Or, school assignments that I’d come up with 5 variations when it just asked for 1.
>it feels like a compulsion

Along the way, the “ADHD mind” helps you hyper-prepare for all hypotheticals. I find this in songwriting, where I can write tunes on command and be able to swap all parts (chorus, verse, outro, bridges, sonata forms, etc.) with as many variations.

The drawbacks is that you can intimidate others if you’re in a band (“hey, leave space for me… but uh what’s a good note over Aadd9?”). Or, you lose a bit of magic when you know what’s behind the curtain.
>>
>>129644033
well the traditional method would be to learn the notes instead of the shapes that what the sight reading is for but I’m also a shapes person so
>>
>>129644209
there's not really a difference. a shape is just where the notes are when your hand is in a specific position on the fretboard. you'll notice the x's, those are notes that are not in reach in that position. at the end of the day you learn both - it's pretty easy to understand that the C and D become sharp and move up a fret when you go to melodic minor. the paper is a crutch while my ear learns the notes
>>
https://voca.ro/18LXh98Qfk0a
>>
>>129644201
the biggest drawback is actually that you spend way too much time hyper-preparing and never perform
one side of yourself has a voice and wants to share it, the other side is critical of that voice and says you're not ready. the magic happens when you can soothe that critical side
>>
Isn't filing fret ends part of a company's QC? Cause mine are sharp as FUCK

>>129644297

>>129643947
The truss rod doesn't adjust the action that much. You reduce the action by sanding down the saddle until you get the desired one.
>>
>>129644311
damn, guess I'm retarded for thinking I can buy a guitar and actually play it
>>
>>129644316
learning shapes is a great way to hear intervals but it won’t establish as strong of a link towards perfect pitch as learning the notes as a primary. it’s also slightly slightly less efficient when it comes to having to decode multi-layer information. say you are trying to match a mode or scale with a key and progression that is using a lot of add chords or voice leading, instead of having to juggle multiple shapes psychologically and see which fits best, as long as you know the notes in the chord you can just target them on the fretboard even if they are out of position so it’s only one thing to think about. you will know where the notes are from sight reading. again it’s not a big deal and learning shapes is a gateway to fretboard memorization but I would say it’s a detriment to your potential to stop there
>>
>>129644339
Wrong
>>
>>129644385
well the plan isn't to stop there and i don't think you are proposing a better way. i don't even know what you are suggesting besides "learn the notes". ok, how. i seem to be doing that already

if i write the names of the notes i'm not learning anything i'm just reading the notes. i'm supposed to fill in what note it is with my brain to associate the fret with the note
>>
>>129644574
additionally its pretty easy to tell which note is which because the C and D (C# and D#) are crossed out to denote they change when modulating so i know those are C and D and I can fill in the rest with my brain

My other point is sometimes more is more, better IS better.
>hey Coltrane, can you keep it down ffs? we get it we get it, lotsa scales, okayyyyy
Life isn’t always a zero-sum game, where you get retard strength and dumb intelligence. Some people get retard strength and superior intellect. Anything else is just cope.

maybe stop blog posting if you’re going to get offended by someone commenting on it.

The Real Book is like 300 pages. Yours looks like a poorfag printout and btw has always been covered up in every photo you’ve posted which is very telling since you aren’t writing in standard notation.

You can literally do anything you want to make it work gitbro. Everyone's hands are different.

There are tips to use your body to anchor the guitar in your stomach area with your picking forearm while strumming and actually bend the neck back a bit (not reef on it, but enough to help the barre contact the strings).

You can rotate your finger slightly so it barres on the side of the finger to avoid the creases of your index finger. You can press your finger HIGHER across the 6 strings so it actually comes off the 6th string more than normal.

You can adjust your arm DOWN & OUTWARD in a J shape physically to get more leverage. And finally, yes you can play partial barres and even ignore troublesome treble strings, just get good at muting them.

Also, get a proper setup from a worthwhile guitar tech. Not some chain-store guitar tech who spends like 5 minutes on your guitar for $XYZ dollars. But someone with a reputation for giving a shit about your instrument.

Go to a guitar store and try higher end guitars and try barre chords on them.

Try different string gauges too. Barring on thin strings is a lot easier than mediums or heavies. Just you don't get the same tone and with abuse, they'll snap easier.

Try leaning to barre on an electric vs an acoustic. Soooo much easier. But your hands will get much stronger on an acoustic. Also, try playing standing up versus lying down on your bed or sitting in a chair. Barres seem a lot easier to handle standing up. Again, you can use your body to anchor the guitar and control it. That's literally half the battle, physical instrument control. If you're struggling, then it's your technique that is faulty.

Just some ideas to explore.
