How long would it take me to become a good singer if I took vocal lessons?
I’m quite musically inclined and while I in theory have a good vocal range I can only sing a fraction of that well but I tend to improve fast at least with instruments, not sure about my voice. I also smoke so that’s probably one reason why my range isn’t too good right now but I intend to quit

Not sure how long anon has been smoking for but your vocal cords repair themselves so long as you haven't chain smoked for 30 years.
Hell, Bowie smoked & did a fuck ton of coke and his voice arguably got better

He arguably reached his peak in the Berlin trilogy (Though I love early Bowies voice) and he had been smoking for years at that point & considering how addictive of a personality he had he probably smoked a fuck ton

I want to play piano so bad, guitar isn't boring me or anything but I can't make certain sounds I want with it.
How well do synths emulate keyboards/pianos?
>>
>>129709685
they are different sounds. i'll admit the one thing the strat lacks is this sound. but the strat neck pickup is superior in every way and thats the most important sound on your guitar
>>
>>129709878
Nose drugs do more damage to your vocal chords than smoking. Just stay hydrated and you're fine if you smoke.
The history of recorded music is overwhelmed by singers who smoked constantly, to no ill effect. Well, cancer and shit, but it didn't hurt their vocals because they stayed hydrated.

Yeah I am, that's partially why I want to play piano now.
Learning theory on guitar is actually preferably IMO since it's objectively more difficult than learning on a piano. I've been playing for about a year now and once I learned the fretboard and some theory it really opens it up

I was bored of guitar until i started playing classical, didnt touch my electric in 3 years now.
>>
>>129709898
piano makes one sound. if you're looking for tonal variety switching from guitar to piano will not save you. electric guitar is the king of tonal variety
>>
>>129709958
i think the white keys and black keys set you up for failure learning music theory. guitar definitely has its own challenges with differently tunes strings, but at least all notes are treated the same and C Major isn't some magical "special" key
>>
>>129710016
I'm looking for the warm sound of a piano bro and they're played differently from a guitar too
>>
>>129710063
the benefit of piano is sheet music is written for piano and the white and black keys make it easier to sight read sheet music in a way no other instrument can
>>
>>129710068
that isnt true at all
>>
>>129710074
give me a counterpoint. sheet music is just like the piano, it assumes you are playing in C-Major unless otherwise specified with the key signature or accidentals. naturals are treated as different notes than sharps and flats on sheet music and the piano. no other instrument does this and its clear sheet music is for pianocels
>>
>>129710066
Try classical guitar if u want, its very warm and deep
>>
>>129710066
you can get the same level of warmth with a guitar. piano has a different attack that you can't reproduce on a guitar but that's about it.

It's like the guy wrote this book for me. It just makes so much sense. The order of teaching things, the way of teaching and the exercises shown. Today was the first day I actually knew what I was looking for. I had to learn about what action was/felt like. Even on my p bass when I showed it here and I'm the shop people with experience commented on the action being high and my off string. Since I'm still new, my ears didn't hear why my p bass sounded muddy with distortion and why all flats are better. I only had the off string since November but the p bass has been like that since I've had it. I never noticed where my problem was with guitar until today when I worked it out with the guys at the store. You all would say you dont need to put that much pressure down and I always was but now I get why.

a real guitar teacher is the whole package. they know theory, they know how to dripfeed it to you, they know how to correct your technique, and they are a judgement-free jam partner to work up your confidence before joining a real jam. you can get similar knowledge out of books but there's a lot to IRL lessons that you don't get out of a book. glad your goal is to jam though i have the same goal and working towards it as fast as i can

Playing alone a lot can be a good thing. Puts you in the habit of filling the silent spaces, incorporating more lead like lines in your rhythms and /or voicing out what could be vocal melodies in your rhythms. Or more percussive techniques especially if you're an acoustic player.
>>
>>129710966

You can eventually jam with people. Just saying it creates different habits...which aren't necessarily bad. Once you are in a band, you'll stand out more than the guys just playing chords at least.
Struggling to think of a guitarist like that off the top of my head now. I can think of a bassist: Les Claypool sounds like someone who grew up without enough jam buddies on hand. Those aren't the kind of lines you come up with when you have a drummer or guitarist at all times.

You’ve been playing guitar for like a month or two, get ONE guitar that’s halfway decent and fuckin play it, you’re hurting yourself needing to constantly adjust to a new guitar every week. You’re spending way too much time going back and forth on different guitars and debating with yourself on what the “best” would be for you when you should just stick with ONE decent tier guitar and just play it and after you know how to actually play guitar then start worrying about other guitars to add to your stable.

So yesterday when I was practicing, I started hearing buzzing when I was playing my open A and open D strings. They explained that the action was a bit high and there could be some room in the truss rod for adjustment. But the guy played it fine. Once I played them the voca they kinda understood that it was my picking strength and I was a beginner who didn't understand everything. After that one of the guys showed me both the guitars and explained why people aim for tele or strats as first guitars for their clean tone. The JM circuit is more complicated than I imagined and even though i like the shape, the tone of the tele's is much clearer even with my pedals.

>>129711034
The guy who would have done that in their shop wasn't in today. Shop owner also said he would prefer i bring it back for work or trade it so he can get it fixed himself when the guy is back.

>>129711711
I had been shopping blind. Going for the model I thought was the coolest isn't a bad idea but it set me back since I only paid attention to that one thing. I would dick around in the store for a bit and not think much. The difference today is that the guitars felt comfortable to play and sounded nice. None of the others where as comfortable as those 2 today. I thought guitars were just supposed to feel awkward in your hands until one day it doesnt feel that way cause you develop skill.

There’s a reason why whenever anyone asks they’re told a Jazzmaster or Jaguar is an awful first guitar and they should just get a Telecaster or a Strat with a blocked vibrato first and learn on that. Honestly the SG that you had for like four hours before giving up on would have been a perfect beginner guitar to learn on and you could have kept it for many many years and it would have always been useful.

jazzmasters/jaguars are awful guitars no matter what level you are. they are failure designs with useless shit, retarded wiring, retarded bridges. they are fashion statements. there's a reason no high level guitar player prefers them

the reality is that you just won't play the other guitars. you'll have one guitar you prefer, with settings on your rig you like. every time you switch to another guitar you'll have to re-adjust those settings, and they still won't sound as good to you, and your reaction will be "why did I spend all this time fiddling I should have just played the other guitar". sometimes you need to spend time with a few guitars to figure out which one is the one you like, though

That's not my post lmao but I didn't have a decent guitar for my hands until now. I did not know what holding a comfortable until today. My basses are both great and because of my large hands I never had any issues with them being comfortable. Today was the first time playing didn't feel uncomfortable. I thought guitars were just supposed to feel weird in your hands until you learned to play since I never asked for in person help when looking

>>129712144
The SG wasn't comfortable in my hands either and that neck dip thing it was doing drove me nuts. Plus the G string kept going out of tune. I don't think I'll ever get a gibson or epiphone

>>129710355
Actually this might check out. I lost 100 pounds (no ozempic here, diet and started jogging) and immediately bought a mustang.
>>129712179
This. Also based fellow mustang. The only reason you should buy another guitar is to either figure out if you like it more, or to do something entirely different. I keep each of my guitars in different tunings, and play them through different amps. I do switch my pedals over though but have been considering (out of sheer laziness) buying a second Blues Driver lol.
Also nice mustang

this is something you can figure out in 5 minutes actually trying the guitar in person instead of looking at pictures and videos and buying online. at least you finally figured it out and bought guitars you liked to play. if you sell these i will find you and punish you

The real guitar to get is a semi-hollow with 2 PAF style humbuckers (ES335 or clone of it)
ACTUALLY versatile, can do country to metal, best upper fret access for lead, obviously can do Jazz, because of the hollow wings can be played unplugged for writing/practicing. Not currently en vogue so you can get a Korean DOT on reverb or pawnshop for the price of a squier strat easily and it's literally Gibson tier save for the pickups. Unlike a les paul or SG is comfortable to play seated.

This is basically what I've been trying to do the last few weeks. I got helpful advice here plus YT and tried to figure things out just using that and not asking questions in store. I don't really regret going around the circle cause I've tried every kind of body so my ears know what they feel like. Now I know what a guitar is supposed to feel like and I'll never play anything without checking the action first
>>
>>129712854
guitar shops should have a rent-then-buy option. it takes some time to know if it's the right fit, and once you know you don't want to let go of it
>>
>>129712899
the music shop i got my trombone from for band in high school had a program like this. probably more common for stores that are oriented towards students
>>

yes if you want to make an acoustic quiet though you should tape a heavy piece of rubber or some damper to the soundboard. the strings aren’t what’s making the most noise

foam dramatically changes tone and sustain, given that your pickup is likely an undersaddle piezo like 90% of them, going with the soundboard dampening won’t change the tone at all and likely just make it a bit quieter through the headphones

No, you can't do that with any guitar. It makes physical noise when you pluck the string. You would need one of those weird shitty MIDI guitars. Even electric guitars can be fairly loud unplugged.

that's why I have my amps on ONE setting for my favorite and plenty of EQ on my multifx adjusted to perfection for every other instrument.

>>
>>129714057
also foam will really kill the sound of the pickup because you’re killing the string energy. energy goes: strings > saddle > soundboard, so just dampening the soundboard is the best way to go. it’s not as easy but it’s the best solution

The only thing Fender sells at that price are custom shops or limited models that have the attention of CS.
If you mean $2000 range Gibsons, those aren't their standards. Fenders at that price are better anyhow.
>>
>>129717203
the ultra II strat is $2400 thats only a couple hundred less than a les paul standard
>>
>>129717217
It's also better. Some of the cheaper LP Standards have purposely gimped finishes. Like the "Vintage Honey Burst" which just looks like raw wood grain really. And none of the other modern appointments those Ultras have (pickup switching, compound radius, etc). Also rosewood instead of ebony fbs.
You still need to get to about $2800 to get a "Standard" Standard.
I think the Fenders should be cheaper, but I don't think the Gibsons are better either way.
