It's worth wondering just how much of the album as we know it remains intact from 1989 and how much was really added in studio in 1995. I reckon, by the sound of it, nothing too substantial was added.

> This album was originally recorded in 1989 and was intended to be the fifth Bathory album, but the album was not immediately released and had not been finished properly. Because of this, Quorthon was worried that it drastically presented a departure from the band's original black metal sound, so the project remained in the vault until it was finally redone in 1995. According to interviews, around 40% of the original material dating from the 80s was re-made - the remaining was untouched. This album falls right in line with the Viking era of Bathory.
Shit, I assumed it was all re-recorded.

How can we get it into your thing, ethereal skull that the music is great. The music's wonderful. Between 1969 and 1975 (with the exception, MAYBE, of 1972's Come Taste The Band) the group could do NO WRONG. They could also not make metal. 11/10 incredible, wonderful, memorable, HARD rock, hell fucking yeah! But not metal
>>129742406
Rush did not influence Sepultura, Bathory, Sodom, Godflesh or Kreator, miss. And being influential to metal bands does not include in its definition -its essence- "being metal". Blues influenced ALL METAL TO EVER EXCIST. Blues is not metal

Dude i painstakingly transcribed and learned Jon Lord's neoclassical shred solo on Highway Star, transposed to guitar. You can kiss my ass that they're not metal, you just have no ears and a limited understanding of what music is in general. Sorry to be rude to you but I'm tired of people gatekeeping metal. If you were a kid in the 1970s Purple, Priest, Sabbath were all heavy metal bands to you. That's what matters not redefining what metal is in later decades because the music changed into a cringe internet collection of antisocial autists.

No one's gatekeeping, you're welcome to enjoy whatever the fuck you enjoy. Again I am a fan, it's just that it's a hard rock band, like Led Zeppelin. Not Metal
>>
Once Heavy Metal (a sub-style of rock music) became Metal (a genre in its own right), it became impossible not to be a bit revisionist and look back through the development to tell proper early metal (Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, etc) from adjacent hard rock (Deep Purple, Budgie, Led Zepellin, Humble Pie, Leaf Hound etc etc) apart with newer standards. Deep Purple never created riffs and guitar tones that would go on to define doom, thrash and even death metal like Black Sabbath did, or to inform the entire Power/Speed Metal musical language like Uriah did. Sorry, sometimes these things work out like that.

I think Synarchy was/is supposed to be the logical endpoint for their dissonant sound. You can't really push it much further without falling into the same pitfalls that DsO copycats fall into, eg dissonance and technicality for the sake of dissonance and technicality. At some point the sound losses it's emotional core, which DsO is so great at capturing, and becomes just noise.

I'll be curious to see where they go next but I'm almost certain they'll never take a step back. If they keep their schedule we may know this year.

The thing is I don't get that Synarchy argument, Furnaces was clearly them taking a new direction and condensing the sound into more "typical" songwriting, and focusing on one overarching concept and the different aspects of it. They went that way and did it will (unless you're Kekky who hates it).
This has the good idea of multiple vocalists, even if Mikko still runs laps around everyone else, but my god the songs have gone from "DsO sound in a more accessible style" to "I could genuinely imagine Kerrang playing this". That is fucking atrocious.

That and the drums are weirdly fucking terrible compared to everything that came before it, which bothers me as a drumfag. Even on earlier tracks like Ad Arma where there isn't much going on the drummer would add tons of intricacy that isn't present ever on this piece of shit.
TLD for me is like 2 good songs spread across one good track and the half of 2 others.

I'm curious where they'll go, but this album is really disappointing to me, and not even that interesting to think bout what they were going for.

I pretty much agree, although I think Synarchy was something of a tamed, distilled conclusion of the thesis put forward by FAS, while Furnaces has the merit of having done pretty much the same for Paracletus. I don't think they're better than the more feral, unrestrained albums they're a mature answer to, but as such those albums were very valuable. If Long Defeat was meant to do the same for SI MONVMENTVM then it failed on account of there being no need to (what with the EPs that immediately followed, and the radical chance that was FAS), and by its sheer lack of power, drive, oomph, etc. It just comes off as lazy and unprepared.

As for the DsO copycats, I think they've managed to outdo the model, and have done so for the past ten years. At least a few of them. Many great icelandic bands going about (althouh come to think of it none of them have released anything in a few years now), also a few dutch and italian ones.

>I'll be curious to see where they go next
O I dread that, like I always do when I feel a favourite going south.

>>129745387
>Furnaces was clearly them taking a new direction and condensing the sound into more "typical" songwriting, and focusing on one overarching concept and the different aspects of it
Yeah, that's exactly how I feel about the FAS-Paracletus dynamic and why I compared those two pairs like that. Well said.
>the drums are weirdly fucking terrible
That's odd. My only gripe is that they're not nearly as busy (and the whole album is heavier/slower, too, which is fine per se but is not executed to its full potential, I think).

Overall I hope they just release the obligatory too-good-for-its-length EP and disband. It's a sad reality, but when the pet you love dearly starts to limp and whimper and shit itself you gotta be kind enough to put it down.
>>
>>129746855
>My only gripe is that they're not nearly as busy
I don't mind them being "not busy" but he used to always find good ways to keep basic rhythms really interesting, usually with great cymbal work or what sounds like ghost notes sometimes.
On this it regularly sounds like basic rock beats with no flair at all.

>and the whole album is heavier/slower, too, which is fine per se but is not executed to its full potential
I'd say Furnaces did it much better. TLD has very little for me to enjoy besides a few moments and I do really hope they keep the multiple vocalists aspect as it meant some parts they could use someone who sounded much more fitting for the part.

Just need them to reintroduce some more ferocity, or at least skew the ratio back to those moments.

Yea, that's kind of what I meant with "not busy". Just beats, no interplay.
>Furnaces did it much better
Definitely. They managed to make some moments become actual doom without having to sacrifice their idiosyncrasy. The Long Defeat mostly seems to force that idiosyncrasy to settle down to their low energy levels.
>Just need them to reintroduce some more ferocity, or at least skew the ratio back to those moments.
Either that or repeat the miracle and go in a completely new, compelling direction that will dictate the way for the larger portion of extreme metal for the next ten years. Uh, surely that can happen twice, can't it?

When the guy whose name escapes me right now who's behind a dozen acts all very similar (Branikald and Forest being by far the best ones) was recording his better albums ('95-'97 I'd say) he was pretty ahead of the game, and no one, not even Burzum sounded like that. I can see how it would sound trite and done-to-death when approaching them from the present going back, but hell, imagine thinking Iron Maiden is trite and done-to-death because you've listened to every Maiden clone that has popped up from under the floorboards these past ten years or so. I mean either that or you're just not into atmoshit, which is acceptable I guess

Also the dude had some interesting ideas about playing black metal with no distortion. That made for some neat, unique sounding tracks.

O'Brien is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He owns a collection of guns including a SPAS-12, an AK-74, and various semi-automatic rifles.

On December 10th, 2018, O'Brien was arrested after the burglary of a house and the assault on a responding deputy. According to reports, he broke into a home and attacked one of the occupants after he was told to leave. When police officers arrived, he charged one of them with a knife and was subsequently tased and taken into custody.

The day after, several weapons were found in his house, including 50 shotguns, 10 semi-automatic rifles, 20 handguns, flamethrowers, ammunitions, and, among other things, three human skulls. He was released from jail on December 14th.

On March 16th, 2021, he was sentenced to 150 hours of community service, a $23,793.45 restitution, and a 5-year probation with alcohol and drug evaluation and treatment.
