This thread is for the discussion of music in the Western (European) classical tradition, as well as classical instrument-playing.
>How do I get into classical?
This link has resources including audio courses, textbooks and selections of recordings to help you start to understand and appreciate classical music:

Strauss' Metamorphosen has the power to save the world
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OkgIkDYV64

Seriously, if you don't like this piece, I'm not sure we can be friends.

Classical composers' best works almost always came near the end of their careers. It's very interesting, because it's exactly the opposite in popular music. I can't think of a single band that continuously got better and better like so many composers did.
>>
>>129781753
I think it's the distinction between composing with some kind of training and classical fundamentals versus pure intuition and passion like a lot of rock/pop/hiphop is.
>>
>>129781729
a bad one since Sibelius' tone poems and symphonies evince the unity of his style
>>
>>129781765
Imagine how good a lot of these musicians could've been if they kept studying and training. I feel like there's still a lot of potential left in popular music for this reason.
>>
>>129781753
Because we get wiser and more intelligent (yes, according to new studies) as we age. And since pop music doesn't actually require any sort of intelligence, nor do the artists study and get wiser, it only becomes shittier.
>>

-_-

I suppose I mean the symphonic structure could help solve some of Strauss' issues. I love Strauss' tone poems, both the short and longer ones, and without a question there's some questionable decisions in them, so maybe in the symphonic form, they would be nullified or at least contained.
>>
>>129781774
I don't mean just pop though. It's honestly the same in every popular genre of music, even the ones that aren't total slop.

Listen. This is /classical/, not "plebbit". We only discuss patrician refined music here. You are on the wrong bus stop, but instead of being a civil individual and leaving, you are instead creating a "ruckus" for the other waiting passengers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMw0EjLFPXw Wagner showed us the dangers of being a "faustian" man, not with long essays and tedious literature, but with elegant sound and smooth instrumentation. You are the devil, "Mephistopheles" trying to seduce us poor souls into degeneracy.

Is it truly music if it does not compel you to envision greatness? Is it truly music unless you start undressing yourself and dancing around like a nude mad chimp? Is it music unless it makes you feel sexually violated? Is it music if it does not make you shout and moan in orgasmic pleasure? Ask yourself this...where is the sex that you were promised? Where is the chosen messiah? Where?

Wagner cultists are weird
And I like Wagner

Nothin' else like his preludes/overtures.

>popular genre of music
Aka pop

>>129781784
sigh

one of you is using 'pop' in the broad sense, the other in the smaller genre sense, relax.
>>
>>129781831
Jazz, metal, and electronic are all pop?

>1: It was our Nusen Dorma!
>2: What's Nusen Dorma?
>3: It's an Italian aria by Wagner.
>1. Puccini. Wagner's German, and you're a moron.

Such a cheap way to show one character is supposed to be the smart one. Yes I watch too much TV.

What show?
>>

The West Wing, S1E02, "Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc"
>>
>>129781888
Something about this kind of stuff just makes me cringe. I mean yeah it makes sense I guess, but would anyone who knows Nessun Dorma think it was written by Wagner? Anyone who thinks that wouldn't call it an aria either, they'd call it an opera song or something.
>>
>>129781895
That's a good point. Lemme see if I can try it,

>1: It would have been our Eroica!
>2: Well, I never cared much for Bach or English music anyway.
>1: Eroica is Beethoven, Bach is German, and you're an idiot.

hehe now you know character-1 is the smart one
>>
>>129781914
Too niche. Only someone into classical music would've ever heard of "Eroica" lol
