How do I realistically play like Prince? He was the best guitarist, btw.

You have to start be learning the blues, and not just blues scales, but you must truly understand the blues, only then can you begin to understand the core of Prince's playing

What’s the deal with Jazz III picks?
They’re so small!
You don’t hold it you pinch a rumor of a pick.
Who decided this was enough plastic?
Did they run out mid-manufacturing?
“Eh, give ’em the rest let’s see if they notice.”
And guitar players swear by them.
“Oh, it’s more precise.”
Yeah, because if you drop it, it’s gone forever.
You’re not playing guitar anymore
you’re searching the floor like a detective.

And why is it called Jazz III?
Where are Jazz I and II?
Did they not make it?
Was this the third attempt to convince people this tiny thing works?
You try to strum with it forget it.
It’s like brushing your teeth with a toothpick.
But the guys who use it?
They love it.
“Once you get used to it…”
Yeah, once you train your fingers to hold nothing, it’s fantastic!

I don’t think Martin style acoustics are very conducive to the lower registers; acoustic bass guitars sound awful. or maybe the upright double bass just sounds too good

Single worst acoustic I ever owned was a fender. Sounded awful and had poor tuning stability. My favourite acoustic is some budget brand called Tanglewood, feels actually robust unlike most of the higher tier acoustics. I do like borrowing my mates big body Martin tho

These guitar guys, they’re picky! One guy spent two hours moving his amp an inch at a time. I said, “What are you doing?” He said, “Chasing tone.” I said, “Maybe it’s hiding at a job interview!”
My friend’s pedalboard is so big he needs a roadie just to go to the living room.
I knew a guitarist who bought a $400 overdrive pedal. He keeps it off — says he likes the idea of it.
These tone chasers, they don’t even play songs anymore. They just play the same chord and nod at it like it told a good joke.
I saw a guitarist arguing with a sound guy for 30 minutes. The crowd left, the band left… they’re still arguing. I think they’re starting a podcast.
Guitar players talk about “transparent overdrive.” For that price, the pedal better disappear and do my taxes!
My buddy says he can hear the difference between maple and rosewood fretboards. I can’t even hear when he starts the song.
A guitarist told me, “Tone is in the fingers.” Then he bought six pedals just in case the fingers don’t show up.

>>
How long is it acceptable to sit in a guitar shop trying out the guitars before it's rude to not buy anything
>>
>>129803041
as long as you want if it’s one day. if you come back multiple days that’s when it’s annoying. I used to work at GC and some dude would come in just to practice and take up one of the amps for 5 hours every day I had to eventually kick him out. there are so few cables and amps to try out because everyone steals them
>>
>>129803081
to add to that very few of the shitty things GC doesn’t make sense but mexicans beating up guitars, people not knowing what baritone guitars are and breaking them, downtuning guitars and not tuning them back, and people playing so loud the workers and customers can’t even hear eachother talking was a multiple times daily occurrence. If you think it’s haha funny then that’s your prerogative, but when you complain that the guitar store is shit or you can’t find anyone to check you out in electronics in Walmart because they spend all day digging bologna someone threw back on the shelf halfway across the store you only have yourself to blame. try them all out all day, narrow it down to two, sleep on it, then come back the neck day and play them both for a couple of hours then decide. you can pay like $50 and put them both on hold for a day or whatever then just use that money towards paying for it
>>

Yamahas are only looked down on my unknowers who still think they’re some budget brand. Pick the one in your budget and it’ll beat any of its competition at that price point up until the $2k+ mark when it evens out.

won't have enough low end to actually fill a proper bass spot in a mix so you'll either have to get some eq pedal and boost the shit out of it or just buy some cheap shortscale bass.

the problem is Yamaha and Ibanez make their $6k instruments look exactly the same as their budget $250 stuff.
Obviously the quality will be different, but customers and especially newbs/normies will be as uninpressed of a $4k revstar as they would be about the $400 version because they look almost exactly identical.

Fender and Squire at least have different labes on the headstock but Yamaha is Yamaha on all of them.

the only bad thing I have to say about HB is that their cheap tuners that the guitars come with are dogshit.
Funnily, the HB tuners they sell for a fraction of the branded ones are just as solid, I don't know why they just don't equip their instruments with them straight away and raise the price by the 20 bucks that they cost instead. HB and Sire have absolutely set the standard for guitars in the sub 500 bucks category, nothing else comes close.

I bought pic related back in 2021 and it was absoluteyl immaculate out of the box, but the tuners almost made me return it. I put some of my spare Warwick tuners in because I have Gotohs on my much more expensive Warwick and the HB has been right next to it on the rack since then. I could not be happier with that thing, it's absolutely insane how fucking good it feels and sounds alongside all the shit it features. To think that i almost got rid of it because of tuners makes me shake my head nowadays.

I've tried some of their other stuff since then and it is always the fucking tuners where I find something to complain about.

>>129803876
the problem my shitty stock tuners had where that you could almost do a quarter turn on them before they actually started tuning, and the winding ration felt like it was 1 to 1 like on a headless guitar, zero precision.
Funnily I never had tuning stability problems but the actual tuning was so finicky and just felt so cheap that it almost ruined the instrument for me.
>>
>>129804003
winding ratio was meh, yes. too much. about precision i turned them all like 20 times just to work stuff in and didnt really have any problems, though we will see if they start drifting like mad while on the wall..
but new tuners are cheap anyways so, i think its worth it even if you end up having to shill out for new tuners.

>>129804056
like I said, you can even buy the actualy harley benton tuners, they're dirt cheap and just as solid as the expensive gotoh etc. stuff.
I find it funny that they are clearly not equipping their own guitars with their own hardware.
The only hardware I would not buy from them is their security strap locks, I would not risk dropping my instrument because I spent 8 bucks on HB rather than 30 on Schallers. But their 40 dollar tuners are just as good as 100 dollar gotohs.
>>
>>129803875
so do you guys not play or what
>>
>>129804077
yeah fuck it, ill get some harley benton tuners next order if these do not measure up over time. i DO have some leftover yamaha ones, but they are the two pin-type, which means i would be left with an extra screw hole on each tuner not used for anything and i would be too assbothered by it.

One time I left my band on my own accord because they kept wanting to play lame ska-ish stuff and that’s just not for me. I wrote 90% of our lyrics, more than half of the music, and would compose all the music ideas people had into workable songs but refused to write lame ska stuff so I left. They got really upset because they relied on me to do my stuff and when I left they had a hard time being happy with the results they were getting doing it themselves and honestly it sucked because it tore my small friend group in two because I wasn’t being “supportive” of the bands’ vision even. I lost friends but I still refuse to play lame ska pop punk stuff.

>Could you not just give me a major or minor voicing there? I’m begging you to approach it with a little more harmonic literacy. What I’m actually hearing is something like a densely colored upper-structure sonority.. maybe a Cmaj13(#11, add9) over an E in the bass, but voiced with enough spatial discretion that it doesn’t collapse into conservatory sludge. Keep the third understated, let the major seventh breathe, and for the love of god don’t make the sharp eleven sound decorative; it should function as a kind of suspended intellectual tension, like the chord itself has read Adorno once and become impossible to enjoy casually. I want it to sound less like you’re ‘playing a chord’ and more like you’re revealing a temporary architecture of grief

So, I am thinking that I was being quite economical when I went with a Classic Vibe and a Frontman 10G. Buyer's remorse isn't really the name for what I've got, because I'm happy with the guitar... I was just considering how much I would enjoy a Stratocaster whammy bar...

I'm thinking I want to get D'Addario Chromes Flatwound 13s strung up, because I might tune Eb Standard every once in a while, and I think it would help my tremolo picking if my strings were very heavy.

If you've been keeping up with my posts recently, I was interested in compensated titanium saddles, but I think I'll just go with the brass ones. I would like to enjoy her Nyatoh body wood and Laurel fretboard. The steel saddles that come stock are nice, and even without top of the line gear, I get Tele sounds out of the bridge pickup. It's a real steal. $740 Canadian and I like it better than the Player Telecaster I had for a while.

The Classic Vibe Telecaster bridge plate, with the edges there--- not lowered or cut; it feels really natural to rest a finger or two upon while picking.

Honestly, I am very happy with my purchase, but I don't get along well with roundwound strings... particularly lighter ones at that. I used to get that pins and needles and goosebumps reaction to running nails over metal ridges. It gave me "the heeby jeebies". So I can not seem to fully feel comfortable playing her, but this guitar has exceeded my expectations. I got over my 21-fret stigma recently and I'm just floored with the enjoyment of the thing; as art or room furniture, are as a playable instrument.

I'm not particularly sentimental about things like this at the moment, but I named her... so I feel a relation. Veronica.

Yeah, window shopping is my thing.
>What gear/music things can I buy?
If you want my honest truth, you should set a budget, like a $100-200 range, and just look at every electric guitar that you can afford new. Once you see one that you really like, maybe double check its 'used' availability.

If you want a new guitar amp, I like my silly little Frontman 10G. It is surprisingly versatile, and has aux in and phones out. Marshall MG10G is another cheap one with a bold tone.

If you have a nice enough place, I suggest going with the Fender '65 Princeton Reverb. It will get you into clean electric sound territory really quick. Deluxe Reverbs are nice too.

Fender-- Telecaster, Stratocaster, Jazzmaster, Jaguar, Mustang, Duo-Sonic

Gibson-- Les Paul Standard, SG Standard, ES-330, ES-335, Les Paul Special... Marauder, S-1

PRS-- Mira, Starla, Silver Sky

Tremolo picking sounds like shit with flats borther. Flatwound strings, especially heavy gauge, are boomy and dull sounding and thats fine for some styles. Thomastik jazz swings are a good choice if you want something less boomy. I think they're a more balanced string both in tone and tension. I like chromes but only use them for vintage style Jazz because they're so bassy ,also they're extra wide so you will for sure need to have your nut filed.

They use different BBD chips. The new one is a copy and doesn't sound the same. There is a noticeable difference between a made in japan ce-2 and the ce-2w ce/standard mode. The ce-2 is warmer, more mid heavy and shaves off a little high end. It's the exact "dreamy" chorus you hear in 80s recordings. Waza ce-2 adds highs/sparkle and the effect itself more subtle. There isn't a single waza pedal on the market that is an exact recreation of the older models, they all have their differences.
